I am due to increase prices this year, was planning it for May but there’s talk of another recession due to the coranvirus and it’s effect on the economy. Is it a risk?
-
There's always talk of a recession.
Just put your prices up and stop panicking.
-
I was thinking that I should just increase regardless, especially as it’s 4 years since my last one., but there’s always a risk that things could go pear shaped with the economy considering the “shut down” that could be on the cards.
-
Yep, it does not stop Sky or Virgin putting up their prices every year above inflation.
-

Putting your prices up won't change that. Nor will leaving them where they are.
I've lost count of the number of recessions and predicted recessions I've gone through as a self-employed window cleaner. None of them have influenced me in when I do or do not alter my prices.
-
It’s this kind of panicking that empties petrol stations and the fact that when I went to buy a packet of toilet rolls the other day the shelf’s were bare.
-

DO YOU WANT TO WORK FOR LESS MONEY THAN YOU DID 4 YEARS AGO?then crack on and keep your prices the same.....
have a look at the uk inflation calculator and put in the job amount and what that moneys worth in 2020 compared to 2016.......you ll soon change your mind....PUT THEM UP!
im around half way through putting 250+ jobs up,most a quid or two .some larger ones and commercial jobs are going up a fiver....no problems so far
-
My advise would be hold fire on the increases some will disagree but that’s what I would do,do an extra house a day if you want more money for the time being.
There’s enough scare mongering at the moment on the news if you are getting good money anyway I wouldn’t push it what’s the point,at the moment why give yourself the stress of worrying you’ll lose work for the sake of a few quid a month, like I say I’d leave it for a while and when things calm down stick em up then.
-

Nah, I need to have an increase, anyone who whinges will have the opportunity to find someone else who is cheaper.. There is always someone wanting a window cleaner.
-
Depends what kind of jobs they are if they are good anyway i wouldn’t rock the boat if it’s a street of fronts or a huge estate and you lose 1-2 who cares,if it’s a big regular job that are good payers and nice people don’t cut your nose off.
-
A recession could last for months or years so waiting until things settle down could be too long. A couple of months maybe, but not longer. Some have been asking if the price was still the same ,a few saying it’s time the price went up. So they are going up in May, get the budget and new tax year over with.
-
Yep, it does not stop Sky or Virgin putting up their prices every year above inflation.
Sky have just lowered their TV broadband packages in the hope of locking customers into a contract for 18 months, I suspect others will follow, yes there have been other recessions but for most plebs they didn't mean much or cause the same panic as we are getting now, at this moment in time I think the less contact we have with our customers the better and that that would include drawing attention to our prices, waiting a few months to see how this plays out will hardly break the bank.

i have some larger jobs ive never put up in 6 years...their going up a fiver.....uk inflation calculator really opens your eyes to how our jobs get devalued as the years go by if we dont put them up....
i honestly couldnt give a toss if i lose the odd job here and there(i havent yet BTW)

Same here.

Imo it makes no difference at all with inflation etc things go up prices rise etc we all know that, the thing you’ve got to ask yourself is will this particular customer take the increase at the given time.
Some will say this is ridiculous you can’t work like this etc they go up regardless,if you have smaller paying work where’s if you lose a few it’s not the end of the world, think of the same scenario when the jobs maybe 75-£100 each and they can be done hassle free it makes you look at putting prices up on a whim differently.
The press are making everyone paranoid at the moment with coronavirus saying it could lead to recession etc,not all but it strikes fear into a lot of people my opinion at the moment would be don’t increase your prices unless they are underpriced and you are losing money cleaning them when you could be doing better priced jobs.
-
I do think it possible that over the next month or so that you might some as viewing an increase as the catalyst/ straw that breaks the camel's back.
Some of the older generation we clean for might well be thinking
1. I'm in the vulnerable age group - one less person at my door is one less chance of me catching CV.
2. Petrol had gone down, why is he putting up prices right now?
3. My kids are getting laid off work and the window cleaner is putting up prices. Not happy.
4. It's time for the nation to pull together and this guy is taking advantage.
All of the above floats around in the subconscious and comes out as "We'll leave it 'til the Coronavirus is over, thanks!"

Yes you might get the odd one like that but the vast majority wont say a word......you cant please everyone...my elderly customers are already on a reduced rate anyway....if they won't except a quid pay rise every now and then......well sod em......I'm not a charity
-
I can see both sides here from last two replies. I haven’t had an increase for a few years, as I said in an earlier post I’m not increasing until about May, Plus with just getting a new van some will say “ you’re just putting the price up to pay for your new van”. In response to point 2 in auRevelling’s post, yes fuel has come down recently, but overall it has increased from 4 years ago.. The cost to me to provide the service has increased year on year.
-
I've been putting mine up over the last month.
1 complainant out of over a 100 so far.
Put them up, if they are going to cancel £1 to £2 isn't going to be the deciding factor.
-

Just say, Yeah a new van to clean YOUR windows, now pay or i dont play
-
Started increase last month.
Cleaned a Bungalow yesterday the person Who S bungalow was not in it was daughters boyfriend who aswered door he came with payment but it was not enough told him it had gone up a £1 started swearing and saying it only takes you 30 seconds .
Told him it's inflation this had not had a increase for a least 10 years.
There's some A holes out there.

You will get every customer that you have that needs an excuse to say sorry we don’t know what we are doing at the moment we will call you,and we all know what that means.
I would say your answer should be the other way round everything on the news at the moment is bad news you putting your prices up is also bad news for them.

Its just Dazmond up to the same old chest beating waffle, last month he was doing £45k a year on part time hours and this month he's that desperate for a quid he cant put off a price rise for a few months, strange that he's now saying sod them to customers he's been afraid to up prices on for the last six years.
To stop falling behind we all need to up our prices but at this moment in time my customers are worried about their health, family's and jobs so putting a price rise off for a few months seems a sensible thing to do.
-
I put half of my round up last September. The first rise since i started 5 years ago.
Was planning to put the rest up this April, but doubt I will be doing that now, need to hold fire to see what the response from this virus is going to be like.
Everything might seem OK now but this is going to blow up over the next few months and we should be concentrating on hanging onto what we have got whilst we get through this rather than trying to push an extra quid out of people. It might be a push too far.

yep but ill be doing around £48k on part time hours by the end of the year matey.......happy days!
i made my mind up to increase prices before the coronavirus became big news.....im not stopping now.....ive not been afraid of putting some of my prices up for 6 years i just didnt realise some were that overdue...times flies by as we get older as you well know sean...... :)
i put a fair few up 3 years ago when i got my new van....most of them are getting a slight increase again this year......

personally i think its the wrong attitude.......the reason why most windys dont put their prices up is because they are riddled with low self esteem and self doubt esp when they watch the news a lot and are scared of losing a few jobs and upsetting customers.......
but the truth is you often find your fears are unfounded and customers dont even give it a second thought and accept the new price no problem at all.....
a quid here and there and a fiver on bigger jobs is not much but it adds up to £2,000-£3000 extra a year for us........
dont forget we re trying to make money here and carve out a half decent living for ourselves and our loved ones....
-
Daz it’s not about the above m8 it’s about using your loaf,if the news is full of recession although it’s not likely people tighten there belts the unnecessary things are the first to go.
Petrol has been frozen as have many other things spirits-beer etc,a lot of customers would expect you to do the same at the moment I wouldn’t give myself the ball ache what’s the point at the moment if you are earning really good money still.
-
Let’s be honest customers know you are doing ok from cleaning there windows if you’re there for half hour and there giving you 50-60 quid, when you start saying things are going up I need to put my prices up I’d think hang on he’s having a laugh here.
I like seeing my customers do well new cars etc builders in then I think they can take an increase.
-

ill do what i want mate.......im not listening to other window cleaners negative comments regarding prices rises.....by the way i only have one job where i can earn £60 for 30 mins work and its a commercial job(which im not putting up!) ;D
-
Exactly well if you had lots of jobs like this then maybe you’d think differently Daz,there’s your answer m8.
If you feel the need to put your prices up then you must need to in this climate,I will leave mine for the time being I think.
-
ill let you all know in a couple of months if i lose any......not lost one job yet..... :D...and i dont expect to either......
-
I’m not putting mine up until May I think! It’s not a good business decision to do it now ( for me anyway)
-

i bet you dont end up putting them up mate....by may the coronavirus will be huge in this country.....in fact i reckon most of us will of had the virus by then......
-
Just put all my jobs up £2 no one has moaned

I definitely will , iv been through every job and the good old inflation calculator, iv timed each job so I know how long each takes and noted how much each is going up... in May! ;D
-

No they are all in bed sick at the moment lol.
-
Just put all my jobs up £2 no one has moaned
That's because for most nothing has changed yet, lets wait until they close the schools and people have to take unpaid leave to look after their kids to see if its a good decision to hit them with a price rise.
Its not so much about the money as been seen to be on the make when people are in trouble.
-
I agree with NWH plus after seeing the news, it would detrimental to customer relatiobs to increase in current economic climate. A few mair months aint gonnna make much difference

All the more reason to put them up in the next few weeks before it gets really bad! ;D

Why don’t you just ring the doorbells on all your customers houses and when they come to the door Daz just slap them straight in the face,if you were my window cleaner I’d say trainers tracksuit jog on pal.
It’s all about loyalty to a point tuff times and all that why do you think people keep you on through recession, they don’t have to they didn’t-don’t always have money or spare money during those times but they still keep you on or push you back a few weeks,I wouldn’t even contemplate putting prices up anytime soon personally.
-
Daz, i'm putting all my prices up aswell letters started going out this week ready for April.
Lets see if we lose any aswell with this Coronavirus.
Bring it on!!!!!! @@@@@@@@@@@

I'm half way through putting them up....
..only another 120 or so to go then I'll be done for another few years.
These are mainly cheaper jobs(£10-£30)with a couple of commercial jobs/larger domestics going up a fiver for the first time in 6 years.....
Most jobs are going up a quid/2 quid.......
-
Some of my customers have already paid me the new price this month even though my slip says next clean.....👍
-
Just been looking at the calculator earlier , most of my jobs will be going up £1,£2; some even 3. Got some smaller ones, .flats that will be going up 50p. A few years back I had this woman grump because the price had increased 50p. Not because of the increase but because she claims I didn’t tell her in advance which I did, by writing it on the slip. She asked how much the neighbour 2 doors along was paying(friends) , I told him the time before by writing on the slip too, but he obviously didn’t read it. When he came to the door, he just handed me my money and said thank you, then went back inside. The following visit, he cancelled me saying he was just going to do them himself from now on, as it would give him something to do now he was retired. When she came to the door,, she said I’m paying £1 less this time,as **** the neighbour said he just paid the usual last time and YOU RIPPED ME OFF!! This was a red flag to a bull, I said tell you what keep your bloody money and find yourself another window cleaner, no one calls me a rip off merchant. She didn’t give me the chance to say he had obviously not read the slip either. The pair of them had obviously been tittle tattling about the price and got their heads together about how to deal with it.

Yeah letters going out next week texts and rude emails to follow lol, like poking a bulls arse with a stick at the moment anything to do with telling people you want more money.
Good luck to you don’t come back on here moaning you need more work in a years time.
-
I suspect the guys who have decided to carry on as if nothing is happening think this is just a storm in a teacup, they might be right only time will tell.
-

I don't think that's what's going on.
I think that the people who are carrying on like nothing is happening, are doing so because they don't really have a choice.

Having to continue working yes but if you believed the poo was about to hit the fan then the last thing you would be thinking about at this moment in time is a pay/price increase, remember its the guys who have replied on here that I'm referring to, they certainly don't give the impression that its because they have no choice.
-
You shouldn’t need to worry about putting your prices up if you are charging enough for what you do,if you are earning well why on earth would you rock the boat can’t see the point of doing that myself.
-

prices need to go up periodically or else you end up working for less money than you did a few years ago, also newer jobs ive picked up over the last few years are at a slightly higher price so im mainly adjusting the older jobs to fit in with the newer work.....it just so happens i decided to do it a few weeks ago before this virus kicked off over here......
another 2 weeks of price rises and ill be done for a few years then......
-
Turn the news on Daz you would have more of a point if you put them up in a years time, you must have a friend like relationship with your customers that’s all I can say lol.
Like I said if they are priced right in the first place the need to put them up now shouldn’t be required.
-
I had considered a price rise this April. I , however, in light of the present circumstances like NWH think it wise to hold off now for time being.
My brother in law called me this afternoon. he's a plumber and already feeling the hit from it. Works beginning to dry up for him and has had several cancellations. I earn enough, no lavish lifestyle, and save enough to ride this out for several months if need be. Right now, I'd sooner just crack on with the work I have and not upset the apple cart.I've lost maybe 5 or so long term customers since the new year for unrelated reasons but its not all doom n gloom, I've stepped in to the boots of a recently retired cleaner and picked up 20+ new regulars in last couple of weeks alone from a good lead. Many hospitality , tourist, leisure and service industries etc. are going to suffer badly in the next couple of months. We should count ourselves lucky.
-
Daz hear all these sayings the old boys used to mention years ago when we were younger we all used to say shut up or listen to that silly old fart, don’t rock the boat never look a gift horse in the mouth a bird in the hand the list goes on m8.
There’s putting prices up because of an increase in genuine expenses or there’s greed.
-
The footballs been cancelled for a month the London marathon is postponed till October, all these decisions haven’t been taken lightly unlike your price increase Daz lol.

They look after you up there coz there’s no money, another saying you can probably remember Daz it’s Kin grim up north lass lol lol.
-
Daz, when are they going to close your gym?
-

What's that's got to do with me putting up my prices?its purely a business decision.nothing else.
-
Daz, when are they going to close your gym?
Had an email off them today....its staying open for the foreseeable future.....if/when it does close for a while I'll just use dumbbells at home...
-
It's times like this when you realise money really doesn't mean anything, we all work hard for more of it, takes something like this to put it into perspective.
Feck a few quid pay rise, its not even important right now. I just hope you all and your loved ones stay safe, we all get through this with our businesses intact and we can go back to worrying about trivial matters such as should i raise Mrs Smith £1 or £2 next year.
-
Hot water is more important than all this virus trouble lol lol.
-
I do need an increase but it can wait until things settle down. My daughter has just had her temporary rolling contract terminated due to the virus. Apparently they have to cut more hours so have been asking staff to take unpaid leave.
-

A girl at the meeting last night was saying the staff at her gym were closing classes 5 minutes early to swab all the gear. Seems fair enough.

i must admit ive never seen my local gym so empty and clean lately!the staff are really keeping the place clean...i also take my hand gel with me...
back on topic.....i can honestly say ive had no problems with notifying customers of the new april/may price rises so ill carry on......
-
I'm taking decisive action......im off to buy some heavier dumbbells from decathlon this afternoon in case they close my local gym.... ;) :)...so I can at least get some sort of workout done at home.......👍

I've got another 88 jobs to increase the prices on over the next few weeks then I'm done for the next 3 years......👍

I really hope you're right Daz and there's no pushback and we can all keep on working. In my heart though I think we're in for some hard times. People are scared and losing jobs. I'm expecting cancellations, we can absorb probably 200/250 but after that we're going to really feel the pinch. No way would I be drawing attention to us right now, I want people to forget we exist for the most part.

I think theres a point for most of us where it would mean dipping into savings.
For me i have about 500 custs, i could probably pay all my bills on about 200 if i was frugal but if even 1 person cancels because of this i`ll start to panic lol

It's already started for me. I had a £40 tonight say she didn't think they needed doing this time. Truth is she runs an event planning business where I guess there are no events planned in the near future. Had 3 others cancel over the weekend and Friday.
-
When I get to the office I fully expect a barrage of cancellations. I had two on Friday but it's escalated since then, well on Facebook anyway.

All the more reason to persevere with your price rises to balance out the cancellations
-
When I get to the office I fully expect a barrage of cancellations. I had two on Friday but it's escalated since then, well on Facebook anyway.
I'm trying to avoid total cancellations as much as possible. Might start to offer 6 month breaks (to those obviously in difficulty) to see if I can keep them in the long run. I'd rather lose a customer for 6 months than forever. Hopefully we still have a viable business at the end of all this.

I have a mate in Spain and he ain't allowed out of the house to walk his dog! That's how bad it could get here.

If somebody cancels then offer it as an option, if they don't accept it just make sure to let them know that they will be more than welcome should they decide to come back.

The police will stop you plus they're now talking about a £1000 fine here for anybody that's told to self isolate and doesn't, unfortunately that's what happens when stupidity and panic take hold.
-
Police lol have we got any then.
-
Plenty of CCTV that’s about it

One new enquiry one go ahead.
I've had two cancellations so far and half a dozen push back to May.

Had a new customer walk up to me this morning and said she wanted a card as she wants her large house cleaned every 6 weeks lol,it’s a lot quieter than it has been though round the villages and roads where I am.
-
Lost one today he told me his business has slowed right down
Got home had 2 letters to cancel till further notice and one text to leave it for now as he's a taxi driver
-
the 2 childrens nurseries that i was gonna put up a fiver each are now on hold.....their due next week but i can see me having to skip these for a couple of months if they close....ive also got some large childrens homes to clean over the coming days and weeks but im reluctant to do so now as ill be worried i wont get paid(i invoice them after ive cleaned all 5 of them)its a fair few hundred quid so im in a dilemma whether to clean them or not.... ::)roll
-
Just clean them and put a note in with the invoice saying from the next clean onwards I am increasing the price a fair few quid lol lol.
-
Be very interesting to see how some of the opening batsman on here are getting on with all those direct debit customers,I wouldn’t want half a dozen staff upwards at the moment all on the books.
Monthly bonus if they can stay isolated for 4 weeks lol,I bet there is a fair few people taking advantage of that at the moment as well.
-
Opening batsman?
-
Ok the 3s and 4s so called big hitters I see it’s all gone quiet on that front on here, that’s the thing with life one minute you’re eating in a Michelin star restaurant the next thing you are eating a crap sandwich lol.
Like I say not exactly the same situation but this is what happened to big companies in this industry about 10-12 years ago, huge contracts one minute covering the south next minute an email saying we no longer need your services.
-
I think Richard Branson might need to sell his island.
-
The only thing that people that are seriously rich need to worry about is not getting this virus.

I wonder how lee pryors doing?

I wonder how lee pryors doing?
At a guess I’d say he’s doing a lot better than the NSS / Archer type firms who are 100% commercial.
-
Makes no difference any company like that will take a hit because it’s down to fear from people, commercial that’s obvious they’ll just lose them domestics it’s a guess
-
Sorry didn’t mean they’d automatically lose them some they won’t,anyone cleaning pubs or restaurants will do though I would think.
The last thing in there minds at the moment would be got to get the windows cleaned,if I had this type of work I wouldn’t clean it without the heads up the chances are you’ll be cleaning it and not getting paid.

I’ve also seen his lads cleaning a house near me, I just assumes they were moonlighting as I thought he’s commercial only.
