Title: Battery charger
Post by: Richard Groves on March 09, 2020, 09:10:05 pm
I currently have a ring smart charger from Halfords. Whilst I like it's features like recon etc. it's a faff to use. I have to remove terminals in my pump box, stick the Croc clips on, test battery percentage, then plug it to mains set charge setting blah blah. Quite big and bulky too.
Is there something easier I can buy and have fitted all the time in the van wired on to the caravan qr terminal connectors ?  Preferably one that shows battery condition at a glance .  I just park up, run an extension cable out to van plug in and press charge. Any recommendations.?

If your van doesn't have smart alternator, just buy a smart charge relay from a motor factor or online. Easy to wire. One permanent live from van battery via inline fuse same from negative minus fuse of course, into the relay, one permanent live to pump battery. Pump battery negative to body earth.

This is what you want. Wire up the ring terminals so all you have to do every night is push in the 3 pin charger. Takes literally 5 seconds. Great bit of kit.

I've used scr in the past and find I don't do the mileage for them to be effective, still had to end up bench charging, but thanks.

TBH  I do more windows than carpets now...was  around 70/30 carpets now it's about 80/20 windows......like the fact with wc  you can start and finish when you want or break off for a couple of hours if something crops up....not so with carpets where your booked in.....also prefer being outside although carpets wins going on the last 4 weeks weather.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean  ?
If I screw  the ctek charger on to the side of my pump box and have it permanently attached to the battery terminals, all I need do is run an extension lead out to my van and plug the 3 pin plug from the charger in to that, no ?

So what's the difference between plugging in a ctek and a standard battery charger?  I have done this 2 nights now. Will be getting second leisure battery at weekend.

Exactly what i do , the ctek comes with two connectors crocodile clip ends and one with spade connectors , each set just clips onto the main leads from charger.

I spliced the charging lead for my gardiner backpack into the spare lead so i can charge the back pack from it too .

That’s exactly what you need to do 👍

The principle difference between them is the algorithm, this article/review explains it well https://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R1THU0OHIH12W9
