Title: Coronavirus, would you?
Post by: drakestar! on March 05, 2020, 05:47:11 am
So would you stay home and lose 2 weeks money or would you keep quiet and carry on regardless (very stupid)

Depends what my symptoms were like.

If I was really poorly I would stay at home, if I felt fine I would work. Same as I would with any cold/flu/illness.

But I don't come into contact with anyone, it's not like I'm going on a bus a train or to a crowded office.

If it's merely symptoms I doubt whether you'd know it's corona virus until you had a test. The "flu-like" symptoms description is a great catch-all for everything from er... flu to lassa fever.
In a self-employed job I reckon you're more likely to just keep working and try and muddle through illness out of necessity.
I await hman's money-bag-pole-adaptor that allows custies to drop their money in a bag and avoid being in breathing distance of us.
Which suits me with some customers tbh

You do realise 80% of people that have corona either don’t realise, or just develop mild cold like symptoms.

Out of the 20% that develop flu like symptoms, 1% are hospitalised.

There’s literally no way to stop this virus spreading.  May as well embrace it and just carry on as normal.

Although I think it is being blown out of all proportion, I would self isolate IF I KNEW I HAD IT.
Unless you are a hermit you are going to interact with people and your family and friends.
What if as an indirect consequence you had shut an entire school down or worse,  infected a care home and residents were to die  ?
Ignorance is bliss as they say, you may not even know it was as a result of your descision. But I would want a clear conscience.

So many on here boast of earnings, their flashy holidays, vans they drive etc. etc.  . As frustrating as it would be to take 2 weeks off, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Most could afford to and its not lost money, just money not earnt yet.  What about these emergency funds people harp on about ? Isn't that what they are for ?

I've recently read that they estimate that 5 million people in China have already had it and most didn't know that they had it. The bigest problem is the sensational reports from the media - nothing else to report on.
The mortality rate for Coronavirus is estimated to be arround 3% and the mortality rate for a full on influenza outbreak is arround 2%.  They should be focusing on safeguarding the people at most risk - the elderly, very young, people with chronic illnesses etc.

Surely if you have it you won’t feel well enough to work anyway?
I don’t work much in the rain, buggered if I’m working on with the flu.

I did notice the Gym was at half capacity last night so either everyone is staying away or they were out panic buying.
I think the media will do far more damage than the virus to this country.

As the first poster said, if I felt ill, I would stay off, if I felt ok, I would work. Let’s face it we are working outside apart from when doing inside work, so not coming into that much contact with people

People don't seem to be getting the point.
If you knew you had it, its not just about not working. Its self isolating / quarantine.
My partner works for a care organistion with very vulnerable severely disabled residents.
Even if I didn't have it and was no  risk to her, she could catch it off someone on a train or bus who's spouse was an infected window cleaner who knew he had it but carried on regardless because he didn't give a monkeys , and felt well enough to work.

Remember the so called "super spreader" in Brighton who came back from Singapore  ? With so few confirmed cases in UK it was easy for his movements and contacts to be traced and contained. What if they hadn't in enough time ? How crap would he have felt if he'd come in to contact with someone that resulted in  death/s  ? ......think on it.

And how exactly would the world function if everyone stayed at home?......here’s the chain of events.......

Power grid goes out, - no one there to repair it.
Deliveries to Tesco cease.
Doctors close down,
Chemists close so no one can get their prescriptions.

Unfortunately the wheels have to keep turning. If everyone self quarantined then more people would die as a result.

If you know you have it, of course you’d stay home.
Unless everyone starts carrying it then we may aswell just all keep going unless we are too ill to work.

Anybody that would carry on visiting customers properties as normal, knowing that they were carrying the virus, is an idiot. Simple as that.

I'm afraid an event like this highlights how low down the "vital services" chain we are. No one died from dirty windows. No excuse whatsoever for any window cleaner to go out who knowingly has it, and for the time being if  I show cold symptoms I'll just have to take a financial hit. As already pointed out, if it did turn out that  you had the virus but thought you only had a cold it could be a death sentence for the elderly. We're in the same boat as the rest of the working world, we've just got to adjust our expectations for the time being and be responsible. Far worse  professions to be in,  the publicans are already suffering without all this, I bet this will be the last straw for several.

That was my point and the original posters question. Not everybody is going to get diagnosed or catch it at the same time which means the likelyhood of a national lockdown and vital infrastructures failing is unlikely. Its about prevention and containment thus protecting the most vulnerable in our society. With such a new strain of virus, little is known. If governments can "nip it in the bud " early enough it has less chance of being completely out of control or possibly mutating and becoming an even bigger problem.

Exactly the point. ^^^

There’s no way currently to hide from
This.

Do you quarantine yourself if you feel you may be coming down with the flu and don’t want to risk giving it to anyone over 60? The answer is no. Life goes on.

I’m not a big conspiracy theorist, but I really think this is big hype by the media.

I may be proven wrong though.  ;D

Book the whole trip/holiday through the airline, this way should they cancel you will be covered for flights, accommodation and transfers.

I bet the sale of takeaways will plummet now if they hadn't already. Its a perfect illustration of what we may face in this country. Many people who will have no choice but to work whilst infected or not pay their rent. I can't help but think this delivery driver probably fell in to that category, now look at the cost.

I think you've lost your mind daz.

It's pretty much all of the North which has been quarantined. No travel in or out and flights already being cancelled to Italy.

It won't be long before it spreads across the entire country. Weeks rather than months.

This thing is going to get much worse before it gets better. I would bet most people won't be going on holiday this summer.

Unless something miraculous happens I won't be flying into Venice as planned in July.

Yeah, I'd hold fire on travel plans if not already booked. I was going to book an end of season snowboard trip early next month. I'm probably not bothering now. It's the hysteria and chances of lock down, travel disruption and cancellations that's concerning me more than getting ill. News is changing daily. Can't be doing with all the uncertainty and cost to me if it  goes wrong.

lol you idiot  ;D blackpool!     that is the most god forsaken place ive ever been.  Oddly ive probably been there about a dozen times. Its always good to take a look around that place to remind yourself how fortunate you are.

As for Venice, been 3 times...it is over crowded but it still has a certain magic...never bought anything there to be honest apart from i remember paying 2 euros to use the toilet. Not that i was headed to Venice this year, just always fly to there then rent a car and drive.

venice is a rip off anyway mate.its VERY EXPENSIVE.....far too many tourists and way overcrowded...its been a victim of its own success esp over the last 10 years......it stinks as well.....better off going to blackpool for the week! ;D

You are joking Daz, I went once to Venice for 3 nights, it was great, didn't smell and if you knew what you were doing not too expensive
Better than those bacteria buffets u have on hols :D

I’ve a cruise booked for the end of May, supposed to be flying into Rome and heading to the Italian islands then around to some Greek islands. Italy not really looking the ideal destination with a large part of the country now in isolation.

You should be fine mate......its only a small part of Italy that's effected....

No it isn't. The whole country is now going in to lockdown.

Tsiodras said on Thursday that Greece expected a significant rise in new cases in the coming weeks.
The 66-year old patient was being treated in a hospital near the city of Patras. Some of the new cases were detected on the popular Ionian island of Zakynthos, also known as Zante.

Thousands of people are dying, it's not great.

I would gladly give up my (paid for) holidays this year to stay away from this.

It's only just getting started in the U. K. Give it a couple more weeks, its about to get real very fast.

I see despite an mp being diagnosed with the virus and having been in contact with fellow mp"s that 650 of them are all sitting in Parliament to hear the budget today, yet they have broadly hinted that us plebs will be discouraged from large gatherings in similar circumstances. I'm all for carrying on as normal as much as possible but will they be as understanding with us in the near future or is it double standards?

Greece, already hit by 31 cases of the new coronavirus, including one in serious condition, announced on Thursday that all public gatherings are banned in three Western regions.

The National Organization of Public Health (EODY) announced late on Wednesday evening the closure of schools and universities, and the “suspension of all mass gatherings” until 6 March in the regions of Achaea and Elis in the Peloponnese, as well as on the island of Zante.

These measures were announced after a 66-year-old man with the virus was hospitalized in Patras (West of Greece). The patient, who had returned from a trip to Israel and Egypt, suffers from pneumonia and is in a stable condition, according to the EODY.

Going to be a quiet holiday Dazmond, still, you might get an extra two weeks chucked in!

I think the key phrase there might be "he's had to cancel it".

As far as I'm aware if the airline cancels flights they have to refund you or offer and alternative flight.

Might be wrong though, need to look into it

I was sat in a quaint little cafe in the same village, and I normally run an advert in the village each month as thus is where i have rapidly grown.
(my average price however is £20 in this area)

Any ways,,,,,i was talking to the staff plus owners and asking them if they have noticed a change recently due to all this panic business.
They were saying how in the last 2 days which are usually very busy this time of the week. (I can confirm that as its hard to get a table in the cafe at the time i was there and I was the only one in) they have seen a drop in business and its likely to last at the moment.
Hence my tongue in cheek advert.

Lol its funny how you say it looks desperate......😂😂  yea right!  Its business as usual and i slightly changed an advert to fit the local area 😉
yet, view it as you may lol.
So far, though I have picked 2 jobs up since posting and for my average price, so win win

Nathan,

Why are you over complicating things again!

Just work/advertise as normal, you don’t need to mention the virus at all.

To get from A to B takes me 5 minutes. For you it means going to C, back to A then to D, before going to B.

Get the idea? Stop overdoing everything!

Dread to the think how many bells and whistles you now carry round your waist at work!

Its a general advert with a virus thrown in, get over it people.  How is that taking the long way around

However your right, i need to amend the advert to mention that if required i can use the all powerful pure water to help wash their hands afterwards 😂😂😂😂😂

Get real people, it spreads through the mouth, nose n eyes.   So maybe i should wear my mask when working as well to be fully free and advertise that 😂😂😂.
Let people panic, who cares. Come xmas people will panic buy cause the shops shut for a day 😂😂 in other words people will react however they wish and we certainly can not control that.  My advert is a little fun and going by the people who have dm me, they agree and see it like that.

However with schools not closing and other group things which we participate in, along with ongoing bad luck with various illness in the family. Your probably right Daz, im sure at some point we will probably catch it.   Anyone with kids knows, that when one catches it, it works through the family 😥.     Self isolate is a little impossible when you have a young family unless you drive yourself into an early grave trying to do so  ::)roll

Obviously the above is a joke and the fact you lot suck it up is even worse!

Ones who have died compared to the percentage of ones having it is very little indeed. Ones who are, also have other underlying issues and so it isnt the corona virus itself that kills but a combination of things.
Like i said, you cant win can you.  Either its stiring up the masses or upsetting the few......

Guess what, this aint going to be the worse virus to hit the world nor the worse thing to take place.

My mate has it and he's had worse colds, that said the kicking I'm going to give him for causing me and the Mrs to be stuck indoors together for the next two weeks may kill him.
Unless you or a family member has an underlying illness then its nothing to worry about.

if I have upset anyone, then my apologies.
Its a very stressful time for a lot of people and uncertainty for the rest.

It's the elderly and those with underlying health problems that have stuff to worry about.  For most of us, we're just going to have a cold.  For a tiny minority things are going to be serious.

So call on an elderly neighbour; make sure they have your phone number; and tell them to call if they need any shopping/prescriptions picking up/a chat.

Keep calm and remember you're British.
