For anyone interested I have just spoken to the Commisioners Office regarding data protection notification, their response:

As long as an you are storing and using data soley for your core business and not passing, selling or sharing the information then you do not have to register under the Data Protection Act.

Short answer is you don't have to register, saving yourself £35  ;D
