Title: window cleaning tips and tricks
Post by: harleyman on February 26, 2020, 07:19:26 am
just wondered if any body has got any tips and tricks to make their day easier??  I have one where you block one of the jets on the brush with your finger which makes the other a bit more stronger  I do this to flush the crud out of the little gap under window on conservatory units  and window frames.

Yeh thats a good one, I do that.

Not so much tips and tricks but just the obvious.

Electric reels
Light weight poles and brushes.
Parking in the right direction
Only taking on easy access work
Pricing well

The list goes on, it's all been done before.

If we are talking about gimmicks then I've tried rinse bars, swivels, bigger brushes with 4 jets, fans jets etc.

And I always go back to a standard brush with 2 pencils.

I've lost count over the years the amount of crap gadgets I've bought thinking there  gonna be useful.

Though I do attempt to flush out the muck sometimes it just seems to keep coming and continues to run out after you've left. Oft times I find it better to turn off the flow before I run my brush over the ledge.

As most know, I use the hip holster for a tap connector on the main hose (on belt as most know), which has a push fit connection for my pole hose. I have cut the first meter of hose and join the rest via a john guest push fit and because of the hip belt, this doesnt drag on the floor and all is good. Yet it allows me to disconnect from the pole for various reasons, one of which is to squeeze the end and blast water out as you mention and this makes light work of it.

Alot of tricks arent tricks really, its about working smarter.  Instead of putting the pole up n down etc, can the house be cleaned all upstairs first and then work back to the front cleaning all downstairs.
Walk to furthest house, so you have plenty of hose out and then work back to the van. This is where the electric reel and remote can help, so when you have too much hose out, you can wind back in as you work closer to the van.

Working out what brush is best for you and your work and then on average how many agitations to clean the window.  A lot will either over clean or the opposite end and under clean via splash n dashing.  Especially on maintenance cleans, I know with my set up that two passes of my brush will clean and the third will rinse. It will rinse due to a high speed and six jets.  This is because I took the time to experiment in my first year and yes wasted some money doing so, but now, for my work atleast, I know I can work quickly and leave my customer satisfied that the job is done well.

Final one, is carry a damp cloth with you at all times, to either wipe the door, sill etc but mostly for the pole hose on these wet, dirty days.

Nathan has some videos on YouTube. Have a look on there or do a search on here.
I think he's called NK Services or something like that.

My big Irish pal gave me a few tips when I started. Real time savers-
One two miss a few.
If it looks clean, skip it.
Frosted? Nah.
No window has a top to the frame.
All excellent tips.

Hi, yep sorry, pics of what as i waffled alot in the post.  Of the brush or the tap or the tap plus the cut hose?
I do have a few vids on youtube, nothing special and quickly put together just to give some helpful bits n bobs. Heres a link to one and then you have the correct channel.
This is using hot water, but its the same brush i use which is 14inch, with 6 jets.

Brush

Holster n tap (i found i needed to glue the holster to stop it travelling/pulling around the belt)

A spare bucket on belt clip to hook the hose around the waist with and lock into place.

Poor old Nathan, the rest of us have went lighter, reduced rinsing to a minimum and he's still wibbling on about bricks with six jets, thing is can we really blame Faceache for Nathan. lol

ive got to agree with sean for once! ;D...nathans set up would be terrible for most of us.....there is absolutely no need for such a large heavy brush and a holster and tap(and the loop that goes with it!).......itll just make your work harder than it needs to be as theres  far better, easier ways to use a water fed pole these days......

This is where I have to disagree.  14 inch brushes are great and you lot like really light brushes and thats fine. However my brush isnt a brick and weighs no where near the likes of vikan etc, so stop being over dramatical about it guys.

You lot drag your hose on the floor, and often talk about connectors breaking, standing on them or snagging on corners etc.  I have no such restrictions.    You have to coil the pole hose to walk to the next job or to make sure its by your feet etc for the pole to extend.
I simpley carry my pole and walk to the next job as my hose follows.
Yes the univalve is great, I even use one on the other pole, but that has its own unique ways of getting used to it, ie holding pole n pulling hose.  All i do is drop arm and quickly swing arm up

I’m the opposite to Nathan,

Literally just me, an xtreme pole and xtreme brush, and my one shot round my neck to turn the water on and off. That’s it.

I’ve never needed anything else.

The longer you do the job, the more efficient you get. As others have said, van placement etc etc. The simple things.

Nathan probably looks like he’s about to head off to war with standard military equipment shoved round his waist, a massive rucksack full of window cleaning supplies, a giant brush with 44,000 John guest fittings on it and trolley system tied to his waist, dragging along as a ‘just in case I need it’.

Just kidding Nathan, 😁

We all work differently, I’m minimalist, some are the opposite and buy/use anything and everything they can get their hands on.

Haha  ;D
I like the idea of the one shot, but not the big medallion fob or i believe they have an app now or is that another system (or ive made it up 🤷‍♂️). Especially since the range on the electric reel is good.

I'm with Nathan on the tap and holster. I don't use a flow controller either.
