I was loathed to cut the lid of my newly acquired IBC tank to fit a submersible pump inside.
I went for a Machine Mart SPE 800 transfer pump with a 1" hose through the removed vent valve of the filler cap. I fitted a foot valve at the end inside the tank.
The pump lives in a cupboard above the IBC tank. The cupboard also has a small bulb inside which can be switched on keep the pump from freezing up.
I need to prime the pump to get it going if I have drained the pump down which I did when we had that very cold spell for 6 weeks 2011/2012.
I've had that transfer pump for around 14 years now. It isn't as fast as an equivalent submersible. It delivers around 40lpm which seems to take forever to fill my 650 liter tank on the van when I stand and watch it. The moment I walk away it instantly fills the van tank and floods the van's floor out. ;D
If the pump failed I would probably buy another pump and set it up the same as it works for me.
The advantage a submersible has is that its more efficient as it doesn't have to suck and pump. Its also sitting in the water and due to the size of the IBC tank will never freeze in our climate with minimal frost protection.
The disadvantage is that you have to cut the lid of the IBC tank to fit a submersible inside.

Mine failed last week, bought from Aldi/Lidl about 5 years ago for about £25/30. A replacement from screwfix was £70 and not as powerful. Next time I see them at Aldi or Lidl will be buying a spare.

I didn't want to cut my ibc tank either so have used this Clarke pump for around 10 years: https://www.sitebox.ltd.uk/clarke-cpe120-1-self-priming-water-pump-oclarke_7230650
I bought it from machine mart but they no loger sell it. They do a similar one: https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/051011800/
I just connected mine up with 1" hose to the ibc outlet using various adapters.

Use the same. First one lasted around 8 years and was about £35 when brought it.
Cut a hole in the ibc in a way that made it a flap so it sprung back once the pump was through
Can’t fault it

I use one of these:
Clarke CSV4A Submersible Pump With Float Switch, 1300w 417L / min flow. From around £80+
With a 1" braided transfer hose, and a petrol pump style filling nozzle. Its the fastest pump i could find within reason of price, as i need something powerful to pump down 15/20 meters of 1" hose. BUT as above, u can get a transfer pump a lot cheaper if filling up speed is not a issue. Ive had the above pump permanently submerged in a 1000L IBC tank for around 3 years (i think) so far.
