Title: Quoting a school etc
Post by: Klean07 on September 11, 2019, 09:37:05 pm
I was asked to quote for a large academy school today never really done anything this big before so any tips advice on how to best quote this type of work would be welcome.

Break it into sections and work out how long each section will take.

Then multiply by what you want to earn per hour and add on extra.

For us 95%-99% of the time schools are a waste of time. They want it done for peanuts.

Don’t forget it’s not just the price that they want.

I do two schools, both outsides only which is perfect,

Smaller one takes 3 hours - £135.00

Bigger one takes 5 hours and is £280.00 (I thought it would take up to 8 hours when quoting, give yourself leeway)

Both are cleaned twice a year, the first one is an academy, the second is a school for special needs/learning difficulties.

When quoting I just used experience and kind of ‘knew’ roughly how long they’d take.

I’m always suprised how quickly you can bosh them out, just take a look at the state of the windows, and then work out how long you think it’ll take, add on a bit just in case.

I want a higher price than domestic for commercial work
£135 for 3 hours work, I'd pass on that
I have experience with schools and I'd sooner stick to residential
I agree that schools don't have the money to make them worthwhile
Each to their own, but I won't quote them anymore
The last school i quoted for i just said £2500 after checking it out and never looked back, had a bad feeling about it after previous experiences with school facilitators.

I find schools a good earner and a welcome change  from domestic work.

I have 5 ranging from a small primary school £200 (mornings work) to £1500 a large college which is just over 4 days work.

My only requirement is all stickers/signs must be removed by the teacher at the end of the school year, which is always done without fail.

Quote really cheap - cheaper than your usual hourly rate and you will have a good chance of getting it.

I'd only quote if it was outsides only....but if they wanted the insides cleaning too  I'd pass on the job.....

Ive only done one educational establishment, an academy in the East End of London. It took two of us 10 days straight. It was great fun, a challenge but the money wasn't quite right. I would've like about 3 more days to be sure it could've been done really well. The last crowd before us charged £1,500 and walked off halfway through the job.

I put 2K on the price the following year and didn't hear a word despite nothing but compliments when the work was done from the facilities staff.

Payment was extremely prompt.

Fair enough.

To me, 135 quid for a mornings work is a good start to the day, it’s easy and the money is paid in a lump rather than chasing smaller amounts from domestic, perfect for me.

The other school for £280 is a nice earner for what it is, I’d much much rather do one school for £280 than the same amount in domestic! That’s for sure!

Dont take any notice of him mate....he drives around in an old white unsigned transit van and works less hours than me...hes just topping up his pension now.....he wouldn't have the energy to work 3 hours straight...... ;)

I'd be happy with both them schools outside only mate...👍

You're right Daz, I'm only looking for dead easy, top earning jobs now im old and totally knackered.
The £280 jobs sounds good, its just my mindset, I want really good prices for commercial stuff and can't be bothered with them unless they pay more than my residential work.
Commercial work usually presents more hassle regarding payments/H & S, etc. so i want a premium
Just the way i roll👍
Love Daz's quip about the unsigned transit 😁😁😁

put it this way, I’d rather have the schools than not, it’s easy, no hassle and lump sums are my go to.

It’s a total of £830 for 18 odd hours work a year.

One thing I would say, if they wanted the insides done, I’d give it a wide birth!!!

Maybe I was unlucky with the ones ive done ;D

Neither school has ever asked for even this daz!

I have had to write a few RAMS for other bigger commercial jobs though.

It’s when you get to the bit about how you manage fraud risk in your company and potential clients you know you’ve picked the wrong career.

I quoted for one, but it was way too big for me and really filthy.
I gave it to a mate of mine who only does commercial.
He plugged into their outside taps and went round the building, with someone else following behind with pure.

That’s nonsense it all depends what domestic type work you’re doing.

NWH what’s nonsense?

It’s not nonsense to prefer those payments over the equivalent in domestics!

Obviously if the domestics were regular and the same price, then yeah.

I just did a school , yearly clean , takes 10 hours for £305  , I do more on domestic most of the time  so why do I do it  ?
Because some days I just want to do something a bit different and not move the van all day long , when the money comes in it’s a nice lump !
