Title: Van insurance
Post by: pikeman on August 04, 2019, 06:33:02 am
Hi just had van insurance quote £736. Gone up from £580 last year. Full no claims  £500 tools. And hire  van if off the road.  Seems a bit steep where does everyone go this is with direct line.

I've found A-plan are good - especially if they know you are shopping around.

However I have never gone for tools or a hire van.

Ive been with Aplan a few years now , they reduced mine at last  renewal by over £80.
They had a new under writer on their panel. From £400 to £320.
Still shop round but would recommend Aplan

Most definitely YES

If you don’t declare a modification, your insurance will be void. And don’t just rely on some persons word on the phone, it must be included in the actual policy wording.

Alexander Swan are specialists in this, and to be honest I would only ever use a specialist insurer.

Not sure about that.

I had a small crash in January 2018 on an icy road, my tank is DIY fitted, and the insurance company still paid out and did all the repairs. They didn’t batter an eyelid at any of the equipment.

Also when I was 21 I had a heavily modified Mazda mx5, a lorry crashed into it, insurance man came round, said ‘hmm, it’s been heavily modified etc etc, - still paid out, no other questions asked.

I think people fear insurance companies too much. Generally, they do pay out.

And no, for the cautious ones, I’m not advocating to not tell insurers, but I am saying, if you have missed a bit of info out, they will most likely not care as long as you’ve been paying your premium.

I’m all for telling the insurance company of any modifications.....what I’m not all for is being ripped off by them for declaring it. More and more insurance companies are accepting water tanks as a modification without adding to the premium, More Th>n  being one of them.

I had a renewal quote from A-plan for around £650 . Previous year was £600 so I ended up shopping around and went with an insurance broker called grove & dean. I got my insurance for £497 with them, these ‘specialist ‘ insurance companies are taking advantage

It seems to depend solely upon the attitude / Terms & Conditions of the individual insurance companies.

I had trouble getting off road cover on a couple of occasions. Several well known companies wouldn't allow me to drive into my field to fill up with water.  Some companies wouldn't insure for the purpose of access and others said that it would invalidate the entire policy. This actually seems to be a standard theme with many companies but they usually bury it in the small print. Presumably they don't want you falling into a ravine and then claiming for a new truck..

I did try reasoning with them but eventually ended up at Gladiator who listened to what I actually needed and then found me a tailor made policy that included off road cover, mods to my truck and having a water tank in the back.

£191 this year with all mods and intentions declared.

I don't know how u lads are doing it to get so cheap insurance?

I've been driving 30 years and never had a single claim, ever.

This current year I am £104 per month for me n my lad as named driver. Due for renewal in 2 months and can't find a quote on any comparison sites for under £1350.

Even quotes for myself only are around £850 for the year.

Funnily enough my oldest lad who has his own car for work, drove through what he thought was a wee puddle in Dunfermline a few days ago and got submerged upto the bonnet, 2 lads shoved him and a few other cars that got stuck in the same place.

Car wouldn't start again, so he phoned his insurance company, they instantly wrote it off. He paid £900 for the car and they offered him £240 less £250 excess, so he would have been due them £10!!! After I intervened we got them up to £600 less £250 excess, so £350 and it was in bank today.

Now he knows to stay out of puddles.

Depends where you live , I know someone who was quoted 3k for his old seat Ibiza because he lives in one of the toughest places in town. He ended up leasing a brand new Mercedes A class sport or whatever it is including insurance and road tax for £200 a month through his workplace car scheme

The cheapest i could find was around 500 pounds. Think ill ring direct line and see if i can get them to come down a bit. Sooner stay with them if i can. Been pretty helpful in the past. has any one had any joy in getting direct line to come down a bit on there quote?

Last time I tried getting my van insured with direct line, as soon as I mentioned the water tank they said they don't insure vans with water tanks. Been with Alexander Swan ever since. I can't be doing with the hassle. Rather have the peace of mind.

We have our cars insured with direct line though. Great company.
