I am a sole trader and my son is thinking about working with me just 2 days per week whilst he is doing some computer programming training (he aspires to a more intellectual job). I want to keep things legal and above board, so what would i need to do to have him as an employee if I pay him around £80per day keeping him below the tax threshold. or can he just give me a weekly/monthly invoice that I put thru as a business expense?
Any advice is appreciated.

Register as an employer with hrmc you will get payrol info.
Contract, payroll, minimum wage, employees n.i etc
Just contact ACAS they will give you the correct info.

My advice is don't bother...
Employing these days is more hassle than it's worth!

Just call it his chores to earn his keep. Pay him pocket money ;D

You’ll need to register for PAYE with HMRC as an employer.
Baring in mind the tax free allowance is just under £12k, if he’s just working 2days for you, at £80 a day he’ll be way under that.
I’m not sure you’ll need to be worried about pensions either, as auto enrollment is something like £10k (you can still opt in though if you so choose I think)
Just bare in mind that your son will still be entitled to holidays etc... the things that all employees have rights to.
Its easy enough to sort out and deal with to be honest, but I’d get the advice from either your accountant (if you have one) or as Gomo says, try Acas.

I would suggest waiting, before going down the legit route, just incase he doesnt stick it out after the first month.

just pay him cash in hand...he probably wont stick it out for long..... ;D
