But you could have a fault on your machine.
Get it tested by an electrician.

Bill, you say an extension. Are you fully unwinding it. If not you are creating a coil causing the cable to heat up. It must be fully unwound and also at a rating to support the machine.
-
its fully unwinded will check the other details tomorow

Bill
Are you using 2 seperate extension leads or just the one? Excel has 2 power cables, try using seperate extension leads
-
it does it even if i dont use the hot water heater was doin a bus the other day also a car it did the same just useing the vac

You probably have an electrical fault Bill.
Shouldnt cost much to get an electrician to check it over.
-
why don't you just call extracta and ask them what the problem is ???

When I had an Excel I couldn't use any type of ext. lead, it just blew it as soon as I turned it on.
I also used a friends which had a higher rating and after about 15 mins it just melted.
Get yourself a TM, no need to worry about blowing their fuses and finding 2/3 sockets to run the machine and using all of Madam's hot water. :P
Been there and never going back!

I have the excell and have only ever found one extension lead that will take it, all the others have worked for a while and ended up melting or blowing fuses. The one i have is a home made one that a workman left in my house once its a really thick cable a little thinner than you would get on a electric cooker and it has a plug on one end and a double socket with a circuit breaker on the other. I plug both leads into this and it works fine from the one sockett, if i were you i would try making one

hi,
I have the excel too and it really does need a very heavy duty ext lead, i've had several that have just fried themselves.
u need one for heavy duty power tools, even then I wouldn't plug both leads into it, its recommended they have separate sockets in the house ...

what do you recomend for a good quality heavy duty exstention lead
-
Bill,
I gave you a link to machine mart earlier ???
That is a heavy duty ext cable. I have one. Its thick cable and will take the power, but you may need to unwind it to be safe.

Any cable that is reasonably thick and has a safety cut out should be suitable, not the sort you get at B & Q ;D

We run 2 excel machines all the time, never had any problems using extension cables, remember this machine is pulling 6kw, it needs a good quality 13A extension lead, not 10A or 5A bought from B & Q. As stated the lead needs to be fully unwound to prevent overheating, but this is standard practice for any extension.
The advice of getting a TM for the sake of a good quality extension lead is slightly OTT.! Although I am not against TM's (I will probably get a prowler in the near future) our machines run day in day out with excellent results and numerous repeat bookings. I personally think the Excel is one of the most reliable and robust portables on the market.

I used an extracta excel for 3 years and occasionally it used to melt the fuse inside my power breakered extension lead, even when fully unwound. It's only a back up machine fo my tm now, but i will in the future be purchasing another one because it was reliable.....simple as, and gave a good performance.

Go to B&Q and get some Blue 15amp cable that will do the trick.
What a lot of people don't realise is electical cable brakes down over a period of time and then starts to build up resistance coursing over heating.

I was joking! ;)

Alltec use blue 16a connectors on their machines with a 2.5mm connection cable that will take 13a comfortably. If I need to extend the cable I use a caravan cable that is rated at 16a and is orange. A 50 mt cable is about £20 with a male & female coupling. An extra female coupling is about £3 so cutting the plug off, cutting the cable in two and fitting a 13a plug on each and a 16a socket on the other gives two 25m extentions rated at 16a which does not give too much of a voltage drop over the distance. I can then run heater and vacs at same time.
Nearly all decent twin vacs with 135 or above pumps use at least 13a and usually 14-14.5. This is why plug fuses last 9-12 months-- they slowly cook.
It is imperative to fully unwind all extensions and not leave them even in a loose coil as the magnetic forces will make them overheat. I have seen a fullup 13a extensoin melted into one lump with the middle smouldering in less than 10 mins.
If you are using a booster box and heaters try to find a cooker point to plug the main mc in. This will take some load off the normal ring main. These are either fused at 35 or 45 amps and a mc at 13 + heater at 13 + booster at 8-9 and your vacs, agimat, and the lady's kettle for the tea can soon overload the circuit. The trip is bound to be under the stairs behind all the usual junk that breeds in dark places!
Happy days
