Turns out I've got a triangular piece of metal in a rear tyre so went straight to Kwick Fit. I knew he'd say it needs a new tyre as the entry was wide, so they only have a Hancook at £120 and I'm thinking there crud! So I'll wait till tomorrow for the conti at the same price even though the vans off the road for today but Arnold's couldn't take it till tomorrow and there was practically no air in the tyre.
Don't know if it's tyre snobery but are they not crap budget tyres? Also can't remember the exact tyre size but for a Custom the Hancooks online are nowt like £120.

Can’t comment on the quality of that particular tyre but personally I stay well clear of Kwik Fit and ATS. Absolute crooks from my dealing with them. Find a local tyre place for superior service and price.
-
Agree with the above. Use a local tyre garage.
Avoid budget tyres and opt for either a non branded medium tyre or a premium one.
-
hankooks come on some new cars, seats and hyundais, possibly more, I would rate them as mid range not budgets, try www.mytyres.co.uk
-
Whatevers cheapest for me.
Always bought part worns myself, although Ive always had old cars/vans.
I would probably treat my newer van to a budget new one when the time comes ;)

I used to use part worns on my transit connect, never had a problem to be fair, it was always well balanced and like new.
Now I’ve got a newer transit custom I’d probably use a decent new tyre.

I'd be more concerned with the correct load rating over the brand.
If your driving about regularly with a few hundred kilos of water sloshing about in the back, i would make sure that they use heavy load duty tyres.
It is a little known fact that most of the tyres you buy for average joe public cars, from Nahgchang Deathtread 10's to Pirreli and Goodyear....they are all made in China now anyway, as ironically, they have the best factories in the world to produce them.
Its not like the 90's anymore, tyres have to have a minimun standard, and i would say even a set of RoadChump Ecosaver made in 2018 would perform better than a 4 year old set of Pirreli.
Only tyres that are made in europe and uk are the super high spec tyres you find on the likes of Mclaren and etc as they are custom fit, custom order (made to order) and have to be wheel matched when fitted and require a couple of days to balance, fit and check them.

Not exactly spoiled for choice around here and I couldn't be arsed jacking it up to put the spare on. Infact I hate jacks and especially with a full tank and equipment in the back.
Kwickfit has been fine for me over the years but recently they tried to pull the wool over my eyes saying the van needed a full service to keep the warranty void when it only needed an "inspection" at year 1 according to Ford. When I was in earlier they where saying to some old dear "it's going to be a bad winter" when pushing for a full set of winter tyres. I'm thinking who the f*** is he Michael Fish! So that's the way they must be going now but never had a bother in there before.

Some Michelin tyres are made in Dundee........... for now anyway, there are plans to close the factory in 2020 with the loss of 850 jobs.

cleaniac, my father inlaw had a Passat with a bunch of cheapo tyres on it and when I took it somewhere it was like a Hollywood car chase scene going round the corners with full sound effects. Although nobody was chasing me and it was just the tyres screeeming as they were pish! And maybe I took the corners a little to quick for them...
Based on that I'd have the 4 year old Pirrelis.

Glad they have been ok for you. I took a car to them a good 15 years ago that mysteriously developed a hole in the back box whilst in there, they were all too happy to quote to replace the back box.
My wallet went missing from my car when getting a tyre changed at ATS.
Utter crooks the national tyre companies.
-
They should close Dundee down completely, it's the most dull and depressing place I've ever been to. Why Ravanelli played there I'll never know. Italy or fookin Dundee? mmm
-
I would stay clear of the big nationals.
I've heard 'bad practices' from people who have actually worked there.
-
Hankook tyres are very good. They came as OE on our 4x4 suv and the fronts did 33k, rears even more before they needed changing!!
-
Can't beat a Michelin for me.
Budget tyres are false economy.
-
My Hyundai van came with Hankooks and looking at the reviews Hankook are very good tyres. They certainly seem to last and from memory are about £90/£95 a pop.
However on Mrs AuRavelling79's little Suzuki 4 x 4 we stick with Michelins which grip well but don't last too long.
-
With Kwikfit the web tyre price is cheaper than if you are in the branch for exactly the same tyre.
-
Always use Michelins. As long as they are kept properly inflated they last me around 5 years. I think cheaper tyres are a false economy. Regularly carrying 1/2 ton of water you need good tyres.

LOL :D :D I think you will find that even with premium tyres on, a Passat isn't exactly known for its road holding abilities. It would probbably still squirm and wiggle.. ::)roll

Fair point😂😂

I've bought my tyres from here over the last couple of years and book it in to get them fitted at a local garage:

Can save a few quid.

Yep, that’s what I do too, I find the cheapest price for a particular tyre online then get it delivered to a fitting centre, that way the fitting centre doesn’t have a mark up on the tyre.
-
Similar prices to Asda tyres so by the looks of it I'm only £15 of a difference at kwickfit (I think) the pain is the vans only done 3.5k.

what ever they have on the shelf for us , weather cheap , dear , or part worn , just get the vans out on the road were way to busy to worries about what Tyre go on them , buy the time my lot have mashed up and down kerbs , hit the kerb when changing the radio station ect ect they dont last long what or who ever makes them
for us it works out rears last around a year , and fronts every 7/8 months on all vans mk7 transits last longer then the combos but i guess thats down to spinning up when pulling out of t junctions as the turbo lag on them 1.7 16v can be a pain until it cuts in and your off like red rum

You have radios in your vans? You'll be giving them heaters next!
-
For comparison sake £120 at Kwick fit and £114.86 at Black Circles https://www.blackcircles.com/catalogue/continental/vanco-2/215/65/R16/R/109/m?tyre=11227078&gclid=CjwKCAiArK_fBRABEiwA0gOOc7pblzi1mHpJHsL1MzaULc3fEwD61eNqJk98rnlScsXgoMWkw5gVNxoCu74QAvD_BwE
Where as the Hancook at Black Circles would have been £106.56 so a bigger markup for Kwickfit but if it's of lesser quality I'm none the wiser.
-
kwik fit seem expensive....the bridgestone potenza 225/40 r18 92y that ive got on my GOLF GTD are around £80 including fitting.they put these tyres on all sorts of performance cars.....
im lucky as im spoilt for choice for tyre fitting companies near me(3 in a 2 mile area)all of them independent businesses.....
IMO its worth getting decent tyres on any vehicle...its your only contact with the road so get some decent ones!
ive had a slow puncture on one of my golf tyres for the last week, the local young chap just around the corner from me sorted it for me for £15(nail in tyre)including balancing....cant argue with that...... :)

you must do a lot of mileage to go through tyres that quick!i dont usually change mine for at least 3 years from new(unless its a bad puncture)

Some pumped up prices here ........ that’s inflation for you!
-
Try Costco - they do tyre fitting. You need to buy a membership card, (£24 or therabouts) and here in Birmingham you can buy mega-value groceries / diesel at the same time.
