Hi James
I have used Craftex products successfully on varnish before. They have a solvent specifically for these type of stains, and i would put some on a clean white towel or thick tissue then blot the stain out. You will see the colour transfer to the towel or tissue.
When you have blotted out all of the stain, extraction clean over the stain or the whole carpet if required. Prochem also do a good product for this type of stain as well.

Hi
Acetone is the best solvent for nail varnish removal.
You can buy it from supermarkets as 'nail varnish remover'

Hi
The same as doug really, in my experience only one thing gets nail varnish out and thats nail varnish remover!
I had to get lots out of a cream carpet with red nail varnish all over the place (neatly done by a three year old!) and pain stakingly used the remover and it did work but you need to be careful and clean carpet thoroughly after & deodourize ;)
