After a bad winter I was wondering what is the best and cheapest way to heat water in a I can tank in garage obviously a1000ltr tank when filled when heated to say 50deg will stay heated for a good bit
My question is will this decant and stay warm in say 500/600 ltr van mount all day for work use our is it better to heat water as you go
Any info systems photos welcomed

There will be many opinions on this and depending on your priorities wether you feel cheap is better than quality having said that it’s just warm/hot water
I have really can’t justify 5k on a heating system then the running costs on top and I still see issues with carrying gas bottles for the mobile shower setups
I use 2kw immersion heaters and plug in overnight works well and yes 500 ltrs stays warm for several hours - it not be as consistently hot as a diesel system but it’s good enough

Immersion keeps frost at bay and stays warm for work and is cheaper than some options dazmond will be on soon he's had gas before but has diesel heater now. Come on dazmond pro's and con's ;D
-
As above. Immersion if you want it just for frost protection and not for hot.
50 c will soon drop at brush head when hose is out in the cold. Also to take into account temp drop in tank during the day too.
It's a chicken and egg senerio. And you get what you pay for. Cheap and best don't mix.
-
Not that I’m a cheap skate but ,would say a hot tub heater system be cheaper than say a webassco in van system in the long run ,our a boiler type timer switch ,just curious as to pros and cons and get a general feel as to the ways of the jedi
-
I use an immersion heater which is 27inch long and fits at the bottom of an insulated 500ltr wydale tank.
I'm able to get the water into the 60's and 70's.
But I also have a day n night rate tariff for my electric so it works out cheap.
Depending on the water I've used as I don't use a full tank. By time I top the water up at the end of a day ready for next days work, I have a starting temp in tank of being in the forties.
So yes it can be done, but not everyone has the set up to do it this way.
-
DO NOT go for the gas shower units........too dangerous.its just not worth it....
an immersion heater is your best bet mate.....
-
the best and cheapest dont go together mate.the best is a professionally installed diesel heater(with frost stat) but they are pricey.
-
Immersion is ideal for what you want it for.
I put one in mine last year and I'll only use it on the odd occasion in minus temps to stop freezing.
If I wanted hot all day I'd buy a diesel heater but when you look at the initial outlay and the running costs it seems a bit daft to me.

This is complete and utter nonsense, if you're using a full tank of water each day and having to heat the water from scratch then
even with a 3kw immersion you would be lucky to get it to 40degrees in the time available.
A 3kw immersion will require an electrical upgrade and the length of the immersion makes no difference, its power that counts.
If you go back though some of the immersion threads you will find a link to a water heating calculator that will let you work out the amount of heat you can achieve in the time available, the calculator doesnt allow for heat loss while you are heating the water so deduct about 10% from the figure given.
Added, No need for another video showing the temp of your water that has taken three days to heat, (roll eyes)

Here you go ;D

I bought fish tank heaters , can’t remember the wattage but they stopped my water from freezing. Plug in and leave dangling in your tank , I only used them a couple of times in the never ending bad winter of 2018 ;D
Who’da thought it was minus 5 at the beginning of April eh?!
-
I have a 3kw heater with 16 amp upgraded electrics (caravan type sockets).
I've done this on four different tanks over the last 6 plus years and it works very well for frost protection and a side bonus is supple hoses too for easier and "non-kinky" (ooh errr) winding.

Oops too late ::)roll ;D :D

The cheapest to set up is an immersion heater and find out for your self.
Like I've said many a times, if it's a fresh full tank of water Im prepared to leave the heater on for longer. Some of the negative ones on here may be too tight to do so!
Also Sean, havent you heard, size does matter. Perhaps there being kind by not telling you 😂
A piddly 14 inch heater in a large volume of water like a 500ltr tank will take far longer than a larger same kW heater.
Also as I have said many a times, I don't use a full 500ltr tank a day, but this is why I bought a bigger tank so I'm not limiting myself or worried about how much water I get through (less if you miss houses out 😂 before anybody else says lol) in a day. Therefore I have added variables which the calculator doesn't take into account. As the vid shows, the water at the end of the day, THAT'S THE END OF THE Day incase ones missed it, is in the 50's still because the tank is insulated. So even if I was to top the tank up with water from my ibc tank, I still start with a higher temp etc etc.
Again as I've always said, my method my not work for everyone.
Your have to report back on what you decide.
-
Nathan you really haven't a clue, lol, heat is stored energy so 1kw of energy added to your water will be 1kw of energy no matter the length of the immersion.
The calculator gives you the BEST possible heating results so even with all your insulation and other factors you cant better this
its only possible to be worse.
Now once and for all stop with this nonsense, you are only fooling yourself.
-
Cheapest method I think would be the immersion heater route , but for hot water on demand diesel wabasto type heater cannot be beaten but it’s expensive to buy and run , I would say your choise of heating would depend on why you want hot water if it’s to speed up cleaning on dirty first cleans costal work on a regular basis then diesel is the way to go , if you just want to stop freezing up in the winter months then the immersion heater is probebly the best option
-
So I take it the. People that run diesel webasco systems do so on red diesel ,which would make it cheaper yet again so what would you say running cost per day our week with average use of say 10 new cleans and a few mingers ,,our would the diesel heating system still be expensive even on the red stuff
-

There’s a lot of variables, but you can’t use red diesel, (chokes up the burners). A full days use your looking at about £5 worth of fuel tops.
As has been said immersion is the cheapest way to do it, that’s what I currently use, in my static IBC, then transfer that to my van in the morning. It’s warm, and no more.
Diesel Webasto is the best, but also the most expensive.

i treated myself last year to a grippatank hydro heat custom fit system to celebrate 25 years in the window cleaning business.yes its expensive(4.5k including fitting,VAT,etc)but i never have to worry about anything freezing up in winter(frost stat feature)and to have hot water all day every day just makes the job easier(even in this hot weather!).
it costs me around £4-£5 a day in diesel(the system is plumbed into my diesel tank in my van).red diesel is a no no....
having messed around with cheap gas shower heaters, changing bottles and having gas leaks etc this diesel system is much better.so it should be for the price....you get what you pay for....
-
Strange you can’t use red deisel. That’s the only kind if deisel that’s put in my boat and runs the webasto heater.
-

That was my thoughts I’ve got 2 pressure washing hot boxes that run diesel and I’m defo getting red for them

Hi Dave. Nice to see you back. We've missed you.
I think the diesel sold in marinas on the inland water ways appears to be a higher grade and doesn't seem to create the same drama as it did a few years ago. This change was in accord with environmental regulations.
However, those same regulations don't/didn't apply to marina's selling diesel for use in off shore boats.
We live on the North coast and I would be very dubious about buying red diesel for a Webasto heater from our local fishing boat supply pump.
Apart from this pump there is no other supplier/forecourt outlet for better grade red diesel. I've read on here that in some areas Morrisons sell red diesel which would probably work ok with a Webasto/Eberspatcher etc. Obviously we can buy it from the heating oil suppliers but they have a minimum order of 500 liters.
There was someone who used to supply a few 25 liter containers to their heating oil supplier and he went back a few days later to collect them. But I believe the manager was a customer so was aware of where the diesel was being used.

One of the local Redcar window cleaners uses a hot box to heat his water. He buys diesel from that local pump that the fishermen use. The roof of his Transit van was black with soot from the chimney. They have now sold the van and replaced it with a Fiat Ducato and transferred the hot box across. I haven't seen the roof of this new van as yet.
But you shouldn't have an issue as you will be getting the better grade red diesel where ever your inland supplier is.
-
Well I would hope the stuff the farmers put in their tractors is a decent grade 🤔
Now there’s a thought I could run water through the hot box at 150 degrees for hot all day 😂
-
The cost saving for using red is not a huge amount in the scheme of things , its the sulphur in red diesel that causes the problem i believe , but the main thing is to have the water circulate back to the tank when the pole is shut off , the ionics ones do this automatically but its easy to set up yourself .

I guess if something did go wrong you would not be around to tell the tale. ;D
But at least the money you saved would cover the funeral bill. ;D

a gas shower heater is idel you can just crack on and adjust your temp from luke warm to piping hot , i no some on here fret about danger of these but im now on my second heater and had no problims with fire or any type of worry at all as long as the van doors are open your safe ,i think the people who worry are the ones who just brought a new van ;D :P deisel heaters are just as likely to be unsafe but they cost more to run and buy ,the only advantage to deisel is it has frost set were a gas heater will freeze and crack
-
Red diesel is 70p a litre from my local canalboat boatyard. It’s cheaper if used for heating, dearer if used for propulsion. There must be 250 boats in the marina near me and most are fitted with webastos. I’ll have to ask around. As far as I’m aware red and white diesel is the same bar the dye.

(http://www.cleanitup.co.uk/smf/1530907211_369817F1-8EC6-4808-AB8E-05273C83F450.jpeg)Problem with gas is, if you were unlucky enough to get a gas leak all the ingredients are there for a catastrophe. There was a van that blew up in Bristol carrying a cylinder home for the barbecue.

Im sorry but your completely wrong , diesel is much safer , diesel doesn’t burn unless heated or under pressure , you can literally drop a match in it ...........try doing that with gas .

you really havent got a clue what your talking about pal....gas shower heaters ARE DANGEROUS and you wont be insured if your van goes up in flames while your around the back of a property away from the van......
diesel systems are a much safer bet.......
-
That's why vans run on deisel and not compressed gas, even if it save a little money.
I would be worried about it in the back of the van in this heat. It's like a green house.
Diesel heaters are perfect for van environments expecially if they run from the main fuel tank.
I know they cost a lot more but depends on how much you value life or your the loss of your van.
If done right I guess you could get away with it but I would not want to risk security leaving back door open all the while for ventilation.
-
I've had a gas leak and let me tell you it was a scary experience....never again....I took the gas shower unit out straight away and took it to the tip....
-
See , now I am a user of an L5 and have always banged on about if its plumbed and used safely/sensibly then you should not have any problems , but I do cringe every time I see the above pic , and I also wonder if the gas BBQ was still connected and on whilst in transport , then I could see a reason for explosion upon return .
But , I then think about the calor depot close to me who have thousands of bottles left out in the direct sun all the time and that has not gone bang yet .
Also , last year my dad got a new bottle for his BBQ , he used it on the Saturday disconnected and went to use it again on the Sunday but the bottle was empty , it was a BP gaslite bottle that you can see through so there could be no confusion if the bottle was not full the day before upon purchase .
Which brings me to my next point , yesterday I went to my shed and upon opening the door was met by a lungfull of propane , I have 2 bottles , one is a BP gaslite and the other a 19kg Calor , which one was leaking I
dont know , but it was :o
So I am left with the assumption that it is indeed a lottery with regard to safety !
I'm not willing to pay out for and run diesel , plus I'm up to payload or close to anyway , thats what you get for buying a stupidly small van ( save you typing it Daz ) ;D
So this winter I will either go BANG or have an immersion fitted ;D ;D ;D
-
Immersion is the way to go for you rich I think.....obviously don't get a 3kw one and plug it in to a 13 pin normal plug socket or else you 'll run the risk of melting your plugs like candle wax .... ;D
-

This could be my naivety, but I would have thought everyone knows not to just plug in a 3kw heater on a normal 13amp plug etc.
But saying that, I thought I had an opportunity to build wfp trolleys n sell them because people just didn't have the time to do so themselves haha a bit like how we can clean windows because they can't be bothered to do so themselves. But it turns out that a lot of people would get confused a out simple wiring and quick fixes and it then became an headache to consider doing. ;D

Has anyone considered the risk of legionella with immersion heaters?
Apparently it thrives in the 20-50 degree range, especially in water that has been dechlorinated (RO carbon prefilters remove the chlorine)
IMO this is an accident waiting to happen, and then you’d get a lot of publicity for all the wrong reasons.
They take legionella outbreaks very seriously and investigate them vigorously. I remember reading about a case a few years ago that involved criminal charges.

This has been mentioned lots over the years, but I think it’s scaremainering. I’ve nrver heard an issue with window cleaners.
Doesn’t legionnaires only occur in sealed units? Like in air conditioning units and swimming pools. Window cleaners are constantly replacing the water with fresh, and nothing is left stagnant.

Gas must be a big worry for anyone contemplating it.
A hog roast van caught fire on Teesside park this weekend, blamed on a gas leak. They cooled the 4 x 15kg gas cylinders to prevent an explosion.
https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/watch-incredible-moment-firefighter-reaches-14881127
They usually store the gas cylinders outside with catering trailers, but this is a van, so I can only imagine they were stored inside the unit.
One of the local lads had a gas leak and it was a faulty regulator. That scared him and he removed the system from his van.
-
when i had a gas leak it was like a firework going off.( loud bang and flash of fire)..... :o ::)roll
my local gas engineers had been telling me to take it out for years......lesson learned.....
-
I had a gas engineer tell me an L5 strapped in a van was nuts. The fact that theres an ignition source (your WFP battery) was the thing that stuck in my mind the most, and it proved to be correct. I also had an explosion, albeit as minimal as possible, but it frightened the crap out of me.
-
It always amazes me, that even with all these examples of explosions or leaks that people still think it won't happen to them and that they somehow know better.
Don't know if I'm just slightly sadistic but I hope these ones experience it going wrong soon. Not for it to danger their's or other's life's but enough for them to know. It's the same for the idiotic drivers who seem to think it's OK to overtake on bends or as you approach the brow of an hill (obvious no clear sight of oncoming traffic) or that it's OK to travel 40 or 50 in 30mph zones. Everyday they get away with it the braver // stupider they become thinking its OK to do so.

How would you feel if yours went boom outside a school at closing time. Or maybe how would you feel if someone put your children at risk?

Tell that to all the caravan users, motorhome users, mobile chippy users, welders and so on who use and carry gas in their vehicles all the time, anything can be dangerous in the wrong hands.

caravans , motor homes , mobile food vans have to have the gas bottle fitted in its own compartment with a vent hole in the bottom to stop gas build up if there is a leak .........not a crappy chinese boiler hung on a door by a an unqualified window cleaner , they also have to be installed by a gas safe engineer and checked annually .

Very few caravan and motorhome owners have their gas systems checked annually, that said you are right when you say the
systems are installed correctly which is what makes the difference.
-
If memory serves me Daz said his gas leak developed in the heater itself.
But my mates leak was from inside the regulator and that filled the van with gas. I've since heard a few reports of failed gas regulators. If the regulator leaks in a caravan application the gas bottle is outside of the living area so the gas will escape to the atmosphere.
The problem with most windie application is that the gas bottle is inside the van. In a motorhome the gas bottles are in a separate compartment accessable from the outside and sealed to the inside with a vent hole in the floor.
When a vehicle is converted to LPG the gas tank is usually fitted in the boot. The regulator and filler fittings are in a sealed enclosure on the side of the tank and vented to the outside of the vehicle.
How many window cleaners using gas heaters switch the gas off at the gas bottle every time they move the van to the next clean?
.
-
It was the lack of a flue and not a leak that got Dazmond, what happens is at times the heater will take a little longer than needed to ignite so you then get a small build up of gas which goes off in a flame burst, thats what hit Dazmond in the face, in caravans and so on this would just travel up the flue and never be noticed.
-
In reference to the thread title, 'best' and 'cheapest' do not equate.

i had a leak.....turned heater on (last job of the day) and BOOM!a very loud bang and flash of fire......lots of time the heater wouldnt ignite straight away and i got a little flame burst but nothing to worry about....
anyway i dont care now...i would never use a gas shower heater for window cleaning ever again.....
anyone contemplating doing so go ahead do what you want.....glad its your van and not mine....... ;D

Sorry but if comparing to a caravan system you are living in a dream world. It's always concealed in a seperate compartment accessable from the outside. In the event of a leak the gas will divert outside. Its also kept seperate from anything electric opposite side from battery. So not even a switch is inside the gas compartment. Plus it's regulated by law.

I'm not talking about is a botched DIY job such as Dazmonds, I'm talking about a DIY job where a reliable heater is
fitted properly, obviously this will include a heater flue and a vented container for the gas bottle.
The point I'm making is just like a caravans a gas system will be safe if done right.

I’m yet to see a van kitted out properly to caravan spec with LPG.
There was a company doing it a while ago. I think they have now stopped.......

Just make sure you have your your inspection done and have a current gas certificate.

either stick with cold OR
fit an immersion to your tank/splash out and get a webasto diesel heater fitted.....
GAS SHOWER HEATERS SHOULD NOT BE AN OPTION.....ive noticed most suppliers dont sell them anymore.....i wonder why? ;D

Too expensive and not enough demand, ( I think the Sureclean model was around £3k ) a bottle of snake oil will give you the same placebo for about £20.

Which propane camping shower unit did you buy Sid? And how is it fitted? And have you got a link for this product please?
Cheers.
