Title: Van advice - scrap or repair?
Post by: John Mart on May 31, 2018, 03:57:11 pm
I've a Boxer 56 plate. The turbo blew and damaged the engine. I've bought a replacement Dispatch with the 1,400 payload which arrives next week. Meanwhile I've got a Boxer that needs a new engine. The turbo has been replaced (garage error) but it only starts from cold.

My question is would you consider spending £2k for a refurb/used engine to be fitted and keep it as a spare and to be used when van 4 is full or would you scrap?

Depends on the value of the van when fixed. If its worth 3k then go for it and sell it. Any less then scrap it

I'm not thinking like that. I'm comparing it to the cost of a replacement van. Although you're probably right.

If you bought a replacememt, would it be new/newer second hand or an ‘older’ second hand?

A newer van should in theory cost you less in the future

Its a new Dispatch which will leave me vanless, but three workers with vans. It would be for a spare and eventually for worker 4. And me for the odd quote, problem sorting etc.

You could get a decent van that needs nothing doing to it, for the money its going to cost repairing the Boxer. At 12 years old, its not worth it, what happens if say the gearbox packs up 3 months down the line, you are left in the same situation, whether to repair or scrap,. My advice would be sell it as spares or repair, you might get 100/150 quid for it. A builder near me, bought a 60 plate Vivaro low miles, and ran it for just over a year, the timing chain snapped on it and wrecked the engine. A brand new engine was 4k fitted, a second hand one was 3k, so he sold it for spares or repair, and bought a 7 plate Vito to get working again

When you say "it only starts from cold" what do you mean?

That sounds like an adjustment problem rather than an engine failed problem?

What the garage say is that it’s because the engine parts are contracted when cold and once it’s heated up it’s effectively seized. It sounds plausible to me.

If you scrap, Copart usually pay much more than a breaker.  They gave me £250 for an old Trafic that was beyond economical repair.  Paid fast too.
The number I have for them is 08448758841.

Note to mod:  Not an ad.  Just a satisfied customer offering help.

Yes, it was BACS.  Think it was paid the day after they collected it.  I was glad to be rid as well.  The damned thing became a money pit in the end.  I could have thrown another £1k at it, but how long before the next problem? It was 13 years old and did 130k miles.

ALL vehicles new or old are a money pit.

You won't win.
