Seems to be loads doing window cleaning on the side. Not sure I'm comfortable with it to be honest.
-
Firemen are part time anyway arent they?
I think they have always done a bit of window cleaning on the side.
-
Seen a few, spoke to a few .
I don't like it either, cash in hand mob.
There's enough work to go about but still degrades window cleaning.

Good point! Degrades our profession. Some even have signed up vans. Do they turn up to the fire station in them to do their shift? Sorry but it grinds my gears.

Hang them!

I would say guys buying used poles at new prices, additives, £5k hot systems, PPB systems, Constructor Brushes and so on
degrade our profession a lot more than somebody using his/her spare time to make a few extra quid. lol

We have 'on call' firemen in our area. They all have other jobs. When the call goes out to say 10 firemen, the first 6 or so get onto the engine and they get paid for their attendance. Another couple may arrive late and they get nothing.
They all arrive in whatever vehicle they are using at the time. One of them uses a Landrover sign written with all his joinery details on the side.
No one can be judged whether they pay tax or not. Unfortunately there are many who do cash in hand jobs and they aren't only window cleaners. But the tax man will have computer algorithims that will identify a part time employed person paying tax who is living above his means. Those algorithims will have all sorts of parameters built in; for example, where he lives, what his mortgage is, his wife's earnings, number of children, interest paid on savings accounts, etc. The Receiver of Revenue also has a day to day weather report for the local area so they will also have an idea when certain self employed trades would work and when they won't - in other word, how many days in the tax year he would have been likely to have worked. They will also have an idea how much on average each trade will earn on a daily basis using the tax returns of all those in the same trade in that area. (This insight was courtesy of a customer who worked for the Receiver.)
If they see a small discrepency then they probably wouldn't redflag it for investigation, but it will be noted for their future referrance.

So every time my house is on fire I don't ring them.
See how they like it ;).

Good point. I trust the indignant idiots on this post will show the same moral fortitude when their house is on fire.
Seriously, who cares if they earn a few bob on the side. They do a ridiculously dangerous job and the wages doesn’t equal the risk.

Just another case of the window cleaning snobbery that exists on this forum.....

Good job i have a 1000ltr ibc tank full of water with a 170ltr per min pump with a 40mm hose. I can put out my own fire 😂😂😂
As long as they do a good job and dont undercut then i dont have any problems with it.
There are many window cleaners who charge pittance for windows because its beer money or drug money and theres plenty of other shiners who dont claim all their income and dodge tax. So why have a gripe with chaps who sometimes risk their lives to save others.
One of my customers is a fireman and most ofthe time they can be the first responder to nasty situations and have to keep people alive or helpin the best way until the paramedics get there.
Haha, if they turn up in a window cleaning van bet you dont turn them away in spite
-
I think bungle is just trolling , if he is really that insecure that a part time window cleaner might steal his customers then i feel sorry for him .
-
Im a window-cleaner but also do a bit of cash in hand work. Its amazing the places you get to see when you say you'll be a fireman for £10 an hour cash.
Cant see the difference.

Considering it’s rained most days since July last year , and taking into account window cleaners don’t work in the rain , a lot of peoples wages will be down this year then!! ;D
-
On call firemen are people who are full time employed in another profession and part time firemen.
Some are able to be on call during the day due to their jobs but the majority are on call only at night when they have finished work.
They still get paid for turning in even if they don't get on the fire engine and they are on about £3k per year retainer just for being on call.......they get this monthly whether or not they turn out.
Stayed in a B and B last year in Cumbria and the owner was an on call Firefighter.....we got on very well together.
-
They get paid to sleep, play snooker and cook big meals. £30k a year too. No wonder the government tried to put a stop to this nonsense

What’s stopping you going for it then or why have you never applied before if it’s a job that your jealous of?

""Seriously, who cares if they earn a few bob on the side. They do a ridiculously dangerous job and the wages doesn’t equal the risk.""
Health and Safety ensure they don't do a "ridiculously dangerous job".
Like the Manchester Arena bombing when they were told to stay 3 miles away while the public looked after the injured?
" and the wages"
You ever seen a Fireman job advertised?
No, me neither it's a closed shop.
No one ever leaves the fire service once they're in.
I don't know of any other "essential service" job where you can also run a business on the side.
There are loads working round here and I have picked up work after them and most were cash jobs.
-
And don't get me started on pensions and retirement age. Retire at 55 with full pension ::)roll and cream off window cleaning rounds whilst on a 4 day off week. Unbelievable Geoff, unbelievable.

Can you put my house out too, please? And will you text the night before the fire so I can leave the gate open?

Yes I have seen it advertised , that’s exactly how I got in , saw it advertised and applied , then went through several physical and mental tests , followed by a medical and an interview .
That got around 1200 applicants down to 30 ......who then went through a 16 week course , inensive training in lots of different subjects along with grueling pt sessions .
We don’t have snooker tables , we have constant training in subjects such as firefighting , road traffic collision , water rescue , rope rescue , ladders , pt, fire science , flooding , mud rescues , medical training ......and in recent years in my brigade we have lost two colleagues in a fire , not to mention a friend that tried to hang himself from what he has seen .....sadly common in this job .
Even though your an ungrateful idiot , I would still have no hesitation in rescuing you from
A fire , or your crashed car , perform cpr or stop you bleeding to save your life ........ all for less than £14 per hour .
Go wobble your head .

Firemen retire at 60 , that’s if they can still pass the same fitness test as an 18 year old .
-
Im not overly bothered by it , but maybe Bungle is on the sharp end of an undercutting fireman , just a hunch , hence his strong feeling about this .
They have always done it and always probably will , if they pay the taxes its not illegal is it ?

You need to get your facts write before slagging people off mate the retirement age is 60 , I was an on call watch manager for 30 years l left last year as we were doing over 850 shouts a year out the bed quite often 4 times a night then up for work with my main job window cleaning :
Pensions again get your facts right on call firefighters only got pension rights about 8 years ago I would have had to pay 25k up front then 11% of everything I earn from the brigade untill I was 60 to get 4 k a year pension only a fool would do that .
You have no idear what being a firefighter involves do some reasearch first before making while statments and classing us as tax dodging scum as we are not !!!

The problem is Dilys constant gossip and downgrading of WFP mate...
From what I gather, no matter what Fireman Sam (or ‘Clearview/shine/sparkle clean window cleaning Sam’ as he’s known on his days off) says, she just wont listen and prefers her Trad window cleaner.
Dont get her started on this new fangled ‘gocardless’ she’s heard about!

So, we seem to have quite a few firemen on this forum. How many doing window cleaning on the side across the country I wonder?

Is 'woman' sexist too as it has the word 'man' in it?
What about when a fireMAN needs to go down a MANhole? Or would it be fireperson down a personhole?
And if a woMAN is a MANeater, does she (can't say 'she' it's sexist) become a personwhoisn'tgenderspecificeater?
And who now lives in Personchester instead of MANchester?
See, it's just gets ridiculous.

What are you dribbling on about. Who do you think are among the first to respond to a horrendous accident? Also, if you think 30K is a lot of money for that kind of work then you are a nut job.

You oviously don’t look in the right places as the jobs are advertised for all to apply for although there are quite often hundreds of applications for a few jobs
Why did the Manchester crews stay away from the scene if you were in the job you would understand why there are protocols to adhear to weather we like it or not and some times cock ups are made by lack of communication between different organisations , I think this will become apparent in the forth coming enquiries
Is it a dangerous job yes it can be you have a bad day cleaning windows you might break a window : get it wrong when fighting a fire you don’t get a second chance try googling flashover and backdraft see if you would like to go into a building and experience that , I’ve did the job for 30 years and people with an attitude like yours is very uncommon most appreciate what the emergence services do , do we always get it right no do you ? No , look at the grenfell tower block fire that shows the British fire service at its best we are world leaders in the way the Fireservice works at ground level with the training and profecianalism of its members it’s only when you get up into very senior management that are far removed from the real working environment that things go wrong
When they ( wholetime firefighters) are on days off if they choose to have a second job or run there own buisness window cleaning or anything else why shouldn’t they ? We live in a free country where ones can choose what they want to do not a dictatorship where you are told what to do . Many people have two or three jobs that’s there choise : a wholetime firefighter has to have permission from the brigade before doing a second job I personally don’t think that they should have to but that’s the way it is
No one ever leaves the Fireservice again how wrong you are retention of personal is a very big issue especially for on call staff , would you be prepared to give 120 + hours a week cover for 3k a year ? Jump out of your bed 3 times a night ? Drop what you are doing with your own buisness to go and deal with an rtc where some drunk has had an accident . Be verbally abused for trying to help people? And so the list goes on : you need to sit down and think about your comments before coming out with such rubbish

Retirement age used to be 50 if you joined between 18 and 20 but believe it is now 60.
-
About 20 years ago, I phoned a fireman who had been putting leaflets through some of my customers' doors. I wanted to give (not sell) him some of my less profitable work because I was oversubscribed. After a nervous start (he wondered if I was going to pull the "my patch" line) he thanked me and said that he now had enough work because he only wanted some extra to top up his fire brigade money.
Eventually our paths crossed and we shared a few coffees and chats, and I gave him a few pointers. He retired from the brigade a few years ago and packed up window cleaning about two years back (he had scaled it down by then).
He gave me about two days worth of work - free of charge - as a thank you for helping him in the early months.

No, me neither it's a closed shop.
No one ever leaves the fire service once they're in.
I don't know of any other "essential service" job where you can also run a business on the side.
There are loads working round here and I have picked up work after them and most were cash jobs.
Whilst I respect all the emergency services and the job they do.
You can't choose to be a fireman then moan about the job, the hours, the pay or the danger. You know all that when you sign up.
If you don't like it then leave and find another job.
"I've worked here for 20 years, it's dangerous, the pay is rubbish and the hours long"
Well don't do it then!

Why don't we stop trying to find reasons to hate each other and start enjoying life again. I know it's a cliché but the day after my heart attack these sort of petty differences ceased to be of concern to me.

I think for most this forum is just something to do.
A lot of us type utter rubbish (yep me too)
Some of it we mean and some we probably don't. Most of us are sole traders who work in solitude so coming on here and having a little debate is something to do.
Dont take it at all serious, it's just a forum.
I just find it amusing.

a lot of firemen are terrible thieves. i spose the temptations there youre called to a shop on fire and on your way thru the stockroom oooer whats that, - in the pocket it goes
you cross the line once ,maybe as a firemen of 25 you see the chief pocketing summat -and youre stealing for the next 20 years
Either dyslexic. Thick as poo... or Samson. Or all three.

I assume this is a wind-up?
It's as bad as stereotyping window cleaners as thieves who errr interact physically with bored housewives.
If a fire brigade worker gets a conviction for anything, whether or not it's related to their job, they are straight out the door.

I think this thread is getting worse , there’s no need to bad mouth firefighters . There’s some really negative, jealous people around who just bitch about other people instead of doing something about it and improving their own lives.
Needs to be locked really , I don’t think it’s good that ciu has a thread slagging off firefighters

He didn't moan about it; he replied to the wind ups about sleeping, playing snooker and watching Sky etc.
I'd say that was defending the job not moaning about it.
And people have a right to moan about their job and still enjoy and be prepared to do it. Have a look at this part of the forum!
You moan about the weather. A lot.
Bungle, Granny and Harv are obviously on the wind up and should be treated as such. I get that some might not have realised and got upset, understandably, but they are!
Let them get on with it and don't take them too seriously.

I agree Griffin. We all do moan
I was just making the observation that instead of moaning we should do something about it.
Do as I say not as I do ;)
It was just my thoughts.
Like I said In my other post who cares either way

Unfortunately might take some time as the mods seem to be doing window cleaning on the side as well as moderating this forum :-X ;D

Seems to me that those who are complaining are the ones who aren't happy with their own businesses or see the firefighters, among others who may have other work, as some sort of threat.
It doesn't or wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I just concentrate on providing my customers with a decent job at a fair rate in a professional manner, and let any competitors get on with what they are doing.

So we're going on about firemen doing a bit of window cleaning on the side.

Mate of mine is a window cleaner in the East Midlands. He also does TA as well.
Bloody window cleaners, coming in and taking military jobs.

Army are on £37.12 a day. They risk their lives more than anyone. Fact. That's why they have the Paralympic Games to honour them.
