Just sitting having my sandwich, interesting subject on working interviews. Anyone done this with their perspective staff applicant?

Work trials are a great thing.
When I have job adverts out, I advertise for experienced window cleaners......
Everyone who rings up has been doing window cleaning 10 years plus so to say, so I say to them on a scale of 1-10 how good do u rate urself ........... Now bear in mind if u say to me, am a 10 I want u out ASAP coz ur goooooooood 😂
Most people say 10 or 9 which is hilarious really. So on that note am offering u to come out with me the next day if u want and show me what your all about. I will arrange a day or a week depending on how they go and pick them up on the agreed days.
Now as I start early am happy to pick u up on way to first job, but if u can't clean windows ur guna find urself sitting at the bus stop with bus fare waiting for the first bus home.
My point is, anyone can chat the chat on the fone and speak a good job but when it comes to making a living out of it, u won't know wot ur getting til u take them out and have a look.
I had a guy once rang up an says he wants the job, no experience but keen as hell to work, says he's been tarmacing for all his life an how hard can window cleaning be, I gave him a few days just to see how he went but same result as most. U then start showing them how to do it but no matter how many times u tell them they just do wot they think is easiest for them 😤

Trial shifts are a two way thing. It will give the employee a chance to see if the role is right for them too. (Will work wonders for retention rate)
No need to rely on experience. Some of the most hard working chaps come without xp. You can't see this from just an interview.

A good interview will give you some insight into their personality and ethics, I will demo a couple of windows and hand them the pole if they are ham fisted and can’t even open a clamp then that’s the end of them, otherwise they get a weeks trial (paid min wage) on self employed basis if both parties happy they go on the books for 3 months training where they need to reach a certain level of knowledge quality speed etc..
And people with no experience make the best workers

Nothing wrong with them doing a half-day or even a day. But like Smudger says - they should be paid for it on a self employed basis whether you take them on or not. Minimum wage is reasonable too.
I couldn't look a guy in the eye and expect him to have tipped up for four hours and not pay him - even if he was hopeless. Because if he was that bad then I should have picked up the vibe at the interview.

Thats what i did Marc.
I didnt ask anyone for a formal interview, i think they are pretty useless.
Took him out for the day and had a chat with him whilst working, assessed him on the job.
I must have struck lucky with the first guy i took out as hes only been with me a month and he is already out on his own completing the amount of work i set him, which is not that far off the amount i can do. He had no prior experience and i judged him more on his character and work ethic that how good he was at cleaning glass.

Yep, and if they were really clever they would soon realize they could make decent money working for themselves once they had learned the ropes.

...and there lies the problem with staff....you need someone whos a bit thick and hasnt got the money, desire or motivation to start up on their own....
anyone with a bit of a brain will leave and start up on their own when he gets an idea how much money he s earning you....

Not everyone is that way inclined. Some people just want a job without the hassle of 'getting enough customers' and are happy to leave that responsibility with thier boss.
