So with so many people converting to hot water lately have opinions changed on the effectiveness of hot water cleaning as opposed to cold water? is it more effective?
I have an immersion but have not used it for more than frost protection as yet.
From watching nathankayes videos I can see the option is there for me to use it for hot water cleaning, but is there any benefit to it??
-
hot water is a luxury.just like having a new van with a heated drivers seat, air con, heated windscreen etc....
i like luxury....and i can afford it....but if your just keeping your head above water financially dont bother you can clean fine with cold water.
hot water is actually more effective in the warmer months when the water is up to 50c-60c.it shifts pollen, birdmuck, slug trails, bee spots, greasy residue off the windows easier.you can also splash and dash on some work with a bit more confidence.filthy add on jobs come up better too.i personally think the time saving compared to cold is marginal but its less effort all around.
i forgot just how much easier it is to manage my hoses when ive got hot water pumping through it compared to the 100m of wire that it becomes with cold water on a freezing day. :)

It's also a good usp for your business. A lot more compitition in this business over the years and an increase in the numbers moving to hot. So it's also about keeping up or ahead of your local comp.
A customer searching for a wc will have the luxury of choosing who to go with so the more you have to offer the better.

I do a lot of research in to anything that will interest me( I know a lot of it is bullshivit) !
It amazes me that with all the hot water hype and the money invested in such, that there exists no such proof of its superiority over cold water???
How simple (in my mind) would it be to clean two windows on the same house in the same condition, one with hot one with cold.
and compare the difference????
Would it not reach hands further into pockets of wfp's if the proof was there in all its glory? I don't get it, if I was selling hot water to the window cleaning masses this would be the ultimate tool in my arsenal.
Maybe no such evidence exists? Maybe prototype videos have been made and discarded due to not proving anything?
I did see a video on youtube about hot water melting away bird mess on a pane, but said bird poop could of been of the easily removed with cold variety. There is no verification.
Are we being fed £5k lies?
Why the fuuaark hasn't a side by side comparison been done to prove a theory???
Why in this day and age, is there not some proof. It seems to be all pseudo placebo.
-
IF you trust in the method and are already quick then hot water isn't going to make any difference to your daily grind, if your
the type that spends far too much time scrubbing and rinsing then the placebo effect of hot may reduce the time you spend,
its why some see benefits and others don't.
-
Personally i think hot water is a liability.
Glass can crack if you splosh hot water all over it.in the cold.

So placebo? Do you/have you used hot?

Can cold glass crack with hot on it? what is the heat differential?

You get bird poo that sticks like concrete and others that just melt, there lies the problem, was it the hot that done the work or was it just an easy to remove poo.

Yes I had an on demand gas heater and it didn't make the slightest difference to the quality or the speed in which I cleaned,
it did make cleaning dirty fascia's quicker compared to pure from my tank but no difference when compared to using the customers tap with the extra pressure.

I think you’d have to be crazy to think hot water doesn’t clean better than cold. How much better though? There in lies the difficulty.
On 90% of windows Mayb it makes no difference, but it will allow you to work with more confidence as you know that a scrub and a rinse with hot, and every bit of dirt will be gone. Whereas with cold water, it can be easy to miss a pollen spot, snail trail etc.
If nothing else hot water makes your day more comfortable. Just like a powered reel, or extreme pole. Are they necessary? No, but they are a luxury, and make your day easier.
It’s up you yourself to decide if it justifies the cost.
-
So if read between the lines correctly. it did make a difference when cleaning dirty fascia comparable to using extra pressure?

I think the difference between crazy or not is more than 90% and 100%.
Is confidence another term for placebo?

If hot isn’t more effective in cleaning why do dishwashers and clothes washers have hot water settings?
Serious question.
-

It did seem to remove green crud quicker than 3lts per minute of pure from my tank but if honest the customers tap slightly
beat it.
Thing is hot water does clean better, there's a scientific reason for it, that doesn't mean it will make a difference to what we are
removing from the glass.
That said there will always be the exceptions. lol.

Dishwashers are removing grease which is hard to remove, clothes will also contain certain things where hot will help but in both cases its the detergent that's doing the major work.
-
I been using hot through the winter months for about 4 years now, summer I don’t really bother as I find the hose is supple enough and the water in the tank isn’t too cold, this past week however I didn’t drain my system form one night and ended up cracking the housing on my 5 year old lpg heater!
Bypassed it and got a days work in, it was cold the hose was a bloody nightmare and the brush didn’t seem to glide as much on the glass.
Anyway got through it all came home ordered a new heater from Germany but I’m mean time I stripped the heater down, fixed the crack with the quick repair putty metal and stuck it back in, back out today and it’s been so much better having the warm water again!
I only run mine about 25-30 degrees as I cracked a window a few years ago just after I started using hot but I was using the heater at something like 60 degrees lol
Been fine ever since and it melts the bird crap, bug poo etc a little better then cold.
I always say try mixing fairy liquid under cold water tap then try it with warm water, everything loosens up very easy!
For the price of a cheap lpg a 18kg tank and a load of extra clips I’d say it’s a no brainer for me

It isn't an exact science, but it's generally held that every 10 degrees C rise roughly doubles the speed of a chemical reaction. Dissolving/emulsifying stuff is, in essence, a chemical process, so warmer water should do better than cold. And that's why dishwashers etc use hot water rather than cold. It's also why your granny used to boil the bed sheets and towels.
I can only agree that a controlled experiment is really the only way to answer the question once and for all, but it would be difficult to do in the real world. I think that most of us over-clean the windows and probably waste huge amounts of water in the process. I know that I certainly used to use twice the water I use now.
Here's an idea for all you experimenters out there:
1 - smear an equal amount of budgie poo on 4 or 5 windows. Leave it dry for a while.
2 - just use the jet to dissolve it using water at ambient temp, ambient + 5, ambient + 10 etc and see what difference it makes.
Make a video from the other side of the glass of it and post it on youtube. Probably best to do it on your own windows rather than a customer's windows, though. I think it might be quite difficult to explain to Mrs Jones why you're smearing bird poo on her kitchen window! Instead, you can have fun explaining it to your wife and kids if you're blessed with them!
This is only half-serious, by the way.

Ahh!! A scientific question!
A detergent molecule is two-ended. One end is hydrophilic (likes to join to a water molecule), the other end is oleophilic (likes to join to an oil molecule. So what it does is to effectively remove the oil molecules from substances by joining them to water molecules. It isn't dissolving the oil, it's forming an emulsion.
Here's a fun website to look at all about soaps/detergents: https://www.york.ac.uk/res/sots/activities/soapysci.htm (https://www.york.ac.uk/res/sots/activities/soapysci.htm)
When you warm stuff up, you're making the molecules move faster ... they have more energy. They therefore react (= join together) more vigorously. That's why fireworks only go off when you light the blue touchpaper ... it warms up the chemicals and they are able to react explosively.
So the answer is that the detergent does its work more quickly when it's hotter.
I LOVE science!
PS Slacky's handle is only partly correct. Hydrogen needs (i) time and (ii) to be made quite warm before it turns into people.

If you have two dirty cups in the sink with a coffee ring at the bottom, pour a little cold water in one and hot water in the other and notice how the hot water immediately loosens the coffee stain.
Hot water on near freezing glass and cold water on a hot pane of glass on a scorching day causes a thermal shock to the glass,. Very hot water on near freezing glass could possibly run the risk of shattering the glass like pouring boiling water on a windscreen when it's iced up, only idiots who do this run the risk of cracking their windscreen.

We should all know this....
Easy as Pie
Think of all of the four principles (chemical, heat, agitation, time) as four slices of a pie. If you slice the pie evenly, everyone gets the same amount. But, if someone wants a bigger slice, you will have to decrease the size of one or more of the other pieces of the pie.
Here’s how it works in cleaning:
If you have to use little or no chemical, you’ll need to increase time, agitation and/or temperature.
If you can’t use hot water, you will have to use more chemical, more dwell time, or scrub more aggressively.
If you can’t use agitation, you will need more time, heat and/or chemicals. Generally speaking, time is the slice of the pie we want to keep to a minimum. Increasing temperature by using hot water is usually the best way to improve cleaning efficiency and save time. Hot water reduces the amount of chemical you need to clean, suspends more soil, and rinses better.

Hot is so much much better and quicker on gutter and facia cleans. I saw the difference yesterday. Cold took ages with lots of scrubbing and arm ache. With hot it was one swipe watching the dirt just disappear.
As far as windows are concerned. They are not cleaned any better with hot. But the frames are. The windows can save a bit of time on first cleans. Also quicker to get of bird muck and insect poo.

Following on from the washing up thing.
When using very hot water to do the dishes you notice that within seconds after washing a plate and putting it on the drainer that it is completely dry and clean, the hot water just evaporates off.
This would be great for cleaning windows as there would be less water lying around and less chance of spotting. When washing up in tap water the plates still dry perfectly clean, my tap tds is 180ppm and I have heard that rises when gone through the boiler.
-
In fairness over the last few years I was in denial about hot. I have proved myself wrong.
I bit the bullet to keep up or stay ahead of my competition. I saw a massive increase in hot users over the last 2 years.
It's all down to personal choice though. Cold cleans fine - just less comfortable and more tiring. Seen for myself the last couple of weeks.
-
In denial, lol you got to love the silliness of hot threads.
-
Sean, wasn't it you that used to come on here under the name of Ewan?
-
No Iv never used that name Slacky.
-
Sean, wasn't it you that used to come on here under the name of Ewan?
That's probably the most insulting thing you could say to any CIU member!! ;D
I'm pretty sure Ewan was the guy from Tecbuk.
Anyhow... if I did lots of gutter cleaning etc and lots of grubby frames I would probably invest in a on-demand heater- for a "proper" hot water solution. However, for the purpose of total frost protection and more comfortable winter working my immersion heater fits my requirements perfectly.
-
I agree the immersion route is ideal for stopping freezing but for constant hot water it’s not,no comparison on frames with hot over cold the windows dry far far quicker to the point when you leave the job there’s very little water left on the glass. GrippaTank came and fitted my new charger and mains hook up last week with 2 new batteries, the heater is like new now Ive replaced everything in the cabinet the water is almost too hot now lol battery output is no lower than 12-5 when parked up and working for well over an hour and a half on a job,Drive a couple of miles it charges to over 14volts and seems to take ages to drop below 13.Anyone thinking of going hot I would only recommend GrippaTank they know how to set them up in order for them to work in the most efficient way.
