Title: The Joys Of Winter
Post by: jo5hm4n on December 10, 2017, 05:09:09 pm
It just happens to be our busiest week of work next week.  We have 6 full days and even then getting that done is gonna be a push.  ontop of that now have cold weather and snow to deal with.  Somehow i just think for the first time in a while may have to take a few days off or end up getting behind!

Really cant be arsed with this snow at the moment, could it not just wait until the week of xmas when we are actually off work!!!!!

FML

Crap innit josh, I hate getting behind. I am one day behind at the minute, tonight is due a frost so tomorrow may not happen at all.

On a plus note its nearing the end of the year so if it gets out of whack now I don't mind too much as it can all get back in line after new year.

Yes mate its rubbish!  Im about half a day behind but got so much work next week to get through.  Yeah if push comes to shove and snow stays around will have to just catchup in the new year i guess.  Just annoying so close to having a week off, dont need the hassle lol

I was supposed to be in Llanfair, llangernyw, llansanan and allt ddu on Friday!

leaving all that stuff till next weekend now, schools shut tomorrow so I'm off all day.

Hate being off work and stuck in the house.

preparation is the key.

decent wet weather gear, ski pants, waterproof boots, warm hat and gloves.

heat the back of the van overnight or turn on frost stat(if you have it)

ice melt grit and sweeping brush in your van

take a flask of soup with your other hot drinks for lunch.

take a flask of hot water to unfreeze your jets should it occur(cold water users only)

start later and finish earlier.

obviously ill have a bit more comfort than some of you (with a heated drivers seat in the van, heated windscreen, heated wing mirrors etc)as well as a hot water system but trust me i did trad for 17 years on ladders in all weathers  years ago! ::)roll

im having just over a week off at xmas adam(finish fri 22nd/back at it tuesday 2nd jan)so 10 days off.i just move my whole round forward a week.no biggie.

ive got 340+ jobs and ill only be a week behind my normal schedule by the start of the new year.

I could understand wanting or needing to work in minus four if this weather was going to last for weeks and was also an annual
occurrence, but to risk it for the sake of not losing a few days now and again is just stupidity, its like when I tackled the slippery
garage roof earlier on in the year just because I was just too pig headed/stupid to let it beat me which unfortunately and to my cost it did.

Same idea except my round is a bit messed up so will be putting it all into an order so some jobs might be 4 weekly and some 6 or so when I get to them in new year.

Completely agree how stupid of you to tackle a slippery roof  ;D.  I agree with what your saying if it was going to last weeks then i would do all i can to get something done, but just for a couple of days why even bother with all the hassle and risk, thats why i put a good shift through the summer for days like these. if i was doing a commercial job where there's no worry if water freezes on the ground round it and the water can constantly flow i would probably go out and do it but residential i wouldn't bother. Also i dont like to take the risk of driving on potentially very icy roads with half a ton of water in my van (thats just me though).

i go to my van and do a quick test every morning, spray abit of water on the ground if its freezing im not going out.
last thing i want is making an ice rink out of someones drive and getting sued :o

No snow here on Tyneside, but sub zero temperatures, so not out today, got a fan heater in back of van overnight, but  that wont stop the jets freezing, or water freezing on the ground after dripping from sills, dont want to get sued if someone slips.

Arghhhhh
Today normally wouldnt be a problem for me, its showing either - 1 or 0 depending the area im in.
However my mothers boiler stopped so i had that to sort out this morning which gave me a late start.
Then my Sum up card reader has decided to stop working whilst trying to take a payment. Looking So unprofessional and apologising after telling them how good and easy it is to do  ???
Now ive sprung a leak on my main hose on the connection to my tap valve and having to stop n sort this. Its been one of those days as it soaked my leg with nice warm water, which is now freezing cold.
I should have stayed in bed

Previously had an L200 so driving this is more like driving a very smooth car. Still taking a bit getting used to it but other than the radio forgetting how it's meant to work it's been fine.
I was towing this bad boy the other week and pulled it no bother. (http://www.cleanitup.co.uk/smf/1513002878_IMG_20171127_150554.jpg)

I had a bit of gravel under one of the pads of one of them recently. So many sensors it kept cutting out with movement of the chipping!

Sod working in this. Make a snowman and an igloo, bit of sledging, snowball fight and take the opportunity for daytime drinking.

Results are in!

Started at 9:30 water froze on glass instantly on bedroom window!  Went home did some decorating then went back out at 1:30.  Managed to get £100 done today, better than nothing.  Most custies i was supposed to do told me to stay clear as roads to rural houses were really bad.

Guess will try again tomorrow

Inb4 it's worse!!!

Snow on Dartmoor, working nearby without snow but was cold enough to put on several layers of clothing and actually wore gloves for the first time this year as it was bleeding freezing all day with warm water, glad to get home after eight solid hours being frozen all day.  Working tomorrow but at least it will be warmer tomorrow afternoon. Factory to clean Wednesday so will be toasty indoors  :)

ive had an oil filled radiator in the back of my van for 12 hours now.nice and toasty in there.ill start the van shortly, fire up my boiler and by the time i get to my first job ill have warm hoses and hot water.

i forgot how good it is to work with hot water after using cold since feb this year.the hoses are just so much more manageable.bliss.

its still -4 here but forecast to get to 1c this afternoon.all domestics today. :)

Boil a kettle and pour the boiling water over the pump or hose to get it going. Some mornings I have to pour boiling water over my door lock so I can put the key in the lock to open it as it quite often has been freezing up overnight
