I don't use these myself but Iv heard they are better than hoselock

Yes I use them. Much better and less strain on connections.
-
sorry but what do you use to fix the hose to them?
-
Gardiners also do the female part with 1/2 inch barb,I've ordered some today.

Use O clips or jubilee clips to secure your hose to the barb.
You'll need one of these for the o clips http://www.windowcleaningwarehouse.co.uk/GSOCP.html

I fitted a Gardiners Brass Swivel Elbow connector to my Hose Reel about a year ago, i put PTFE tape on Hose Reel thread to
make it more water tight, has worked great with no problems, no leaks whatsoever.

It would depend on your reel, I use http://www.windowcleaningwarehouse.co.uk/proloc-heavy-duty-reel.html which has a built in swivel and needs a barb http://www.windowcleaningwarehouse.co.uk/hose-reel-8mm-adaptor-brass.html or quick connect fitted http://www.windowcleaningwarehouse.co.uk/S26F12MT.html
