Title: DIY trolley build part 1
Post by: nathankaye on August 16, 2017, 04:13:32 pm
Im going to build my own trolley system, onto my existing trolley which i use with a gardiner backpack.
I know many have probably built there own and so i welcome any suggestion or tips on top of what ive said in the vid.

Ps...in the film i said im waiting on a digi controller, i meant to say an analogue controller.
So this is part 1 and part 2 will probably follow after the weekend when ive constructed it.

That looks good and its a great idea to put the outlet at the bottom of the barrel as them small pumps are not generally self priming. I know its not finished yet but do you intend to sit the whole pump box under the barrel ?

Im planning on putting battery n pump into the junction box and sitting that at the back off the trolley, not underneath the barrel.
So perhaps feeding the inlet pipe in thru the bottom of the junction box to the pump and then the outlet perhaps to the right of the box.
Im working on sourcing a light weight hose reel or not to bother n just wrap the hose up as ive been doing already.
But cheers for support.

I used one of those pumps as part of a modification to my PF Trolley to lighten it, as it's roughly 1/4 of the weight of the Surflo and I can confirm that they do self prime.  In fact it primes faster than the Surflo especially if you use 8mm ID hose instead of the half inch that many trolleys come supplied with.  The only problem I had was because I use a Univalve.  The 115psi pressure was to much for it and once shut off you couldn't turn it back on.  But if you're not using a Univalve you shoudn't have a problem.  If you do you can lower the pressure switch rating by cutting 1-2mm off the spring.  2mm will reduce it to about 70psi which was more than enough for me.
I also use a 12v 7ah battery and it gives a full days use running the pump flat out and with the above pressure switch mod made.  If you don't make that mod it doesn't quite make the full day.   At least that's been my experience.

Ok fair enough, i got a few of similar type pumps from ebay and they where fine but did not self prime. But i also seen a guy making a few trolleys on a FB group, they looked great, but he had his feed in through the top and i asked him about priming and his was the same .... didn't self prime.

I wouldn't bother with a hose reel for it. You can pull them trolleys right next to your leg, i'd just have a short lenght of hose with a tap, say......... 3 metres and thats it. Once you start adding hose reels etc  to it you start to lose the "portability" element of it i think.

Looks good Nathan. One question however ...

How do you plan to secure the outlet on your 25L barrel? By the screw thread on the outlet it looks like it's secured by a plastic nut which needs to be inside the barrel.... Or do have another method?

Ive watched quite a number of your vids over last couple of years. Very good and informative.
Ive also recently watched a tonne load of vids on trolley builds as well, i think ive taken a couple of points and ideas from numerous to develop hopefully my own take. But more likely than not it will be similar to someones.

One vid i saw, one chap had a great idea for a light hose reel for his nano trolley (which looks a nice piece of kit, apart from weight n cost) which looked very smart. Only thing is, you need to buy a karcher type pressure washer and dismantle it!! 😂
Great if you had one thats died, but costly for a hose reel.

Good spot!
Im going to pierce a smaller than required size hole and force the screw thread in and either attempt to get a nut on the back of it (pending my wives willingness 😕  or else silicon glue to secure and added leak protection.  Hopefully will be strong enough that the draw from the pump doesnt vibrate it loose. It shouldnt with what ive got in mind which will become clear when its built

As airlockcs are such a problem, would a clear container not be better?

I figured if im dragging round a bright yellow and blue back pack without such problems and not being able to see the water level, im.sure a black container would be just as useful.

Sorry Nathan to sound so cynical, but what are you hoping to achieve from this ? a higher flow and able to carry a few more liters of water.
Its the fact that you use 4 wide bore pencil jets on your brush that you are now spending time and money trying to overcome the limitations of a backpack that would be more than sufficient otherwise.
Like I said, apologies but just my opinion. I'm sure it will look and work great when finished regardless. ;)

No worries barry.
But yes your kinda right. I personnally like working with a faster and wider flow on my work and my backpack wasnt able to give me this. But i did say on vid thatbits a great compact backpack from gardiner. But also for me it looks like im carting a ghost busters' back pack around. Now i'll be able to drag a water container around 😂😂 lol it sounds ridiculous when i say it out loud, but i hope it will look a little more professional from a customers viewpoint than what im working with at the moment.

But i do love making small modifications if it helps me in the long run and if we are all making the money per house as we all say we are, then its not quite breaking the bank.

Ive bought enough of these cheap pumps to still be able to do so.
Lol im still keeping the backpack as a spare or keep it for dedicated purpose instead of windows.
But it still looks like a ghost busters back pack but it will just have a faster pump 😂

I'm not really getting the whole more professional looking bit if I'm honest. And the ghostbusters thing is just in your own head.
Maybe I'm missing a trick here ................... I should go out and buy myself a boiler suit , it could be my USP !!  ;D

Lol, would be funny to see.

It might be in my head lol, so therefore for me i dont mind and to be honest, i wish i did this before. The trolley was a tenner from aldi and i already had the containers due to some additional work.
Therefore this is costing me a couple of quid or so for a pump, a small amount for a battery and a couple of quid for an analogue controller, a digi voltmeter and a toggle switch and less than 5 quid for chequer panels. So building my own trolley which many have done so, is cheaper than buying a back pack and sticking it on a trolley.
But thats just my thinking. Each to their own...........but obviously im not knocking anybody who does this as ive been doing so for a year n half and i personally just fancied a change.  I just like these little projects, like refitting my van etc.

Let me know what you reckon to final product when its done   👍

So by going with a black container you're gonna be replacing the ghost busters cart with a Darth Vader cart ;D

At least with a clear plastic container you can see at a glance how much water you have left in it.

That is quite a good advantage, but im used to having a quick look by taking the lid off the gardiner one so not much change really.
But my work uniform is black so it will cit in quite nicely.
Also im having a lable made up for the front of the container which will stand out more so on a black background.

However i only use the trolley for odd jobs so unlikely i will run out of water anyway.
But even though im not on the trolley all day (as i have a van system), i want it to perform how i want it to.

Good idea with the outlet at the bottom but couldn't be doing with filling it up with a 2" hole at the top,at least with the backpack you're  sure not to spilll any out the sides when filling up,
I like the Brodex trollies with a 50 litre capacity and  no changing barrells, even the x line ones .

Thankfully my hose that i use to fill the back pack is long enough to reach direct to the container so not to spill. If it does become a problem i will invest in a trigger (petrol style ) gun to use

Ok im still waiting for the delivery of my analogue flow controller from north ireland.
So im gonna hopefully put it mostly together and ive just finished my darth vader tank. I decided to use a female rectus fitting. I used my soldering iron to melt a little holr into the side and forced the nut end into it. As the melted plastic cooled and closed in on itself it has given quite a tight fit which i will demonstrate on a vid later when completed. But heres a quick photo

This sticker will go on the front of the container.
