Ok. All these years I have packed my DI vessel as tight as possible. I then watch a vid that Alex made on another site. Some people 3/4 fill. some to the top and some as tight as poss.
Don't know where I originally watch it. I am sure I have seen smaller vessels packed as tight as possible
WHAT DO YOU DO!
-
You need some space at the top for the water to circulate properly. I find a good 6 inch does the job !
-
same here.i NEVER fill it right to the top.i screw the lid on tight though(and careful not to cross thread it!)
-
I fill mine to virtually the top, apart from leaving obvious space for the plunger (whatever the name is). But yes its important that its packed tight.
Top tip, if you start to run water through the outlet as you push the funnel into the resin, it helps disperse the resin which makes it easier. Once tightened together, obviously run your water back through the inlet.

its not important that the resin is packed tight at all.as long as it near the neck of the vessel its fine.just fill with water and screw the lid on and give it a good shake.
-
You need to be able to shake a resin vessel to prevent the resin from clumping or creating channels through which the water flows. If that happens you get manky water with unused resin that gets binned.
-
So by packing it tightly you dont get the channels. Also it acts like a filter so the tighter the better.
Lol off tangent but its like when people make an expresso, coffee goes in and its compacted (not talking about rubbish costa or starbucks where they dont care less as its on a production line). And its the same principle for the resin. More so if your using those small ones from purefreedom
-
my last 25kg bag has lasted over 6 months!(DI only).normally its 3 or 4 months.

Acting like filter? It's already been through the tightest filter you're going to get water to flow through. An R.O. membrane! Dyou know how R.O. membranes work?
-
I just fill it to 2 inch under the threads , give a little jiggle , top up if needed , then fill it with pure water to remove any trapped air , then put lid on , fit to system and go .
I get 4 fills of a 6x18 DI from a 25L bag

Do you know how resin works and the principles behind it?
I use a 4.5ltr di vessel and it lasts for months.

Got my double Di from Air Force last week and he let me watch him fill them.
He poured the 25 litres of resin in a large container then got the hose reel and poured water on it till water was just about pooling on the top.
He then filled the vessels to about 3 inches from the top and slid the plunger thing in which went in quite easily then rinsed resin off the threads and screwed top on.
He said if you put the resin in dry the plunger thing is difficult to push in and can even be bent or broken.

What's your TDS Nathan and what's the secret?

My tap tds is 277, after 3x150gpd membranes its 007 going into the resin in a 4.5ltr tank.
But since you asked, i did do a vid on this for something else, but;

But going back to packing a DI;
Pack tight and run pure water through the outlet side of your di. This will disperse the resin as you push the plunger through.

Yeh lets use a road cone!
Think I'll stick to the Gardiners way thanks. Leave a few inches of room at the top, fill with pure and insert the riser.

Yep that's how I do it.
Add water to the resin until it's a sloppy consistency and then just pour it straight into the vessel.
Couldn't be easier, is very quick to do and the riser tube goes in easy without having to force it down.

Yes, which shows it doesn't need to be pressured in to a container for it to work.

I only use 2x DI

I pack it as tight as possible. Plunger wont go more than 6 inch in. add water and off it goes.

Its not compact once water is added. If people 3/4 fill it. then insert plunger. When water is added it will be half full

I dont understand how ones dont grasp the logic in this

Thats not what they've said. They've not been filling their containers to 3/4, they've been packing it in as tight as they can.

Im on the beer and im lost !!!
How can you 3/4 fill it and add water , then it be only half full .
You guys crack me up ;D ;D ;D ;D
Does resin shrink in your universe ?
