Title: Smoking
Post by: derikraven on May 08, 2017, 06:12:28 am
Picture the scene.............
You've just started to clean a lounge carpet and the customer comes into the room and sits in a chair to watch you for a few minutes. She lights up a cigarette. If you find smoking offensive would you ask her to go out of the room or do you just put up with the smell.
As smoking in the workplace is illegal does  the law apply in this case? The living room belongs to your customer but it is also your work place. What are your experiences?

I wouldn't be happy but I would also be too polite to say anything. On the other hand I might tell her there was a small chance of combustion.

Its there house,  i would still have been surprised as it would be polite to ask if you mind.

Having said that inhaling a little bit of smoke and having a bad smell for a few hours wont kill me, i would just get on with it. Is only like cleaning windows in the rain, uncomfortable but it will pass.

I never say anything, except when they are smoking and asking if what I am spraying will be harmful to their health. Nutters

They are actually breaking the law as their home becomes your workplace when you are working there, applies to all trades, plumbers, sparkies etc. So you are in your rights to ask her to stop or go outside but it's a hard one as you don't want to upset a customer. You could say you suffer from Asthma and cigarette smoke sets it off.
