(http://www.cleanitup.co.uk/smf/1493796618_custy.jpg) Went to a job to clean 2 sofas, the first thing the customer said was " don't put one scratch on my new floor on the way through to the lounge as its' just been polished, hmmm......what do you do? take the chance that none of your hoses/knuckles/cleaning products mark or scratch the polish or do you knock back the job as you know the customer is a potential problem waiting to happen.

I have a golden rule when I am cleaning or restoring a floor in a customers house.
I mask up from the front door all the way to the work area. No machine, bucket, vac or hose ever touches a floor that I am not working on. It shows the customer that you care
The same would apply if I was cleaning a carpet (which I don't) But nothing would touch that floor SIMPLES!!!

That customers and job sounds more hassle than it's worth to me. Anyway like Kevin has already mentioned all you can do is protect the customers property as much as you can and try not to damage anything. Good luck with people like that as they generally will be over your shoulder like a hawk. lol

Put your hoses through a window and use the back door.
If that was my floor and it was new I would say the exact same thing, I don't think he is being unreasonable

Knowing when to walk away is wisdom. Being able to is courage. Walking away with your head held high is dignity.

Take some old dust sheets with you and be carefull?

Just get on with it and stop making a mountain out of a molehill

I think the customer is being perfectly reasonable. If you have a problem with making sure the customers property is undamaged then maybe you are in the wrong job ?

Cover the floor if you do have to use it, show you don't actually want to damage his/her stuff. I can appreciate you being wary,
but if it's just the customer making you aware, and you show initiative in covering it, they may well go above and beyond in touting your rep at some point in the future, and telling other prospective customers how careful and 'not a Cowboy' you are ;)
