i flooded my new van on the first day using it and nearly set it on fire today!beat that! ;D

Sounds like the actual "float" part is faulty. I've had Two go in 13 years. You need to decipher why the float isn't pushing the valve arm up anymore.

Wrong way around daz, flood it after you've set it on fire ::)roll ::)roll ::)roll

When I used to fill my van tank from an ro I didn't have anything as automated as a float switch. I fitted an overflow just at the full level on tank. My van even had a convenient grommet in the floor that I removed for the 1/2 " overflow hose to drop through. If I over filled water ended up on the road under the van . makes for a good fail safe even with a float switch. :)

Not sure why you need multi meter. Isnt it mechanical?
If so, disconnect pipe, blow while moving arm. Does it work. They should last year. Same as a toilet system does

If your finger lifts the arm but the float doesn't then I reckon you've got a little hole in the float which means it lets water in and keeps it in the down position.
