Renewal is due beginning of March. I went on confused.com and there was no options to declare a water tank so I put in carriage of own goods from the drop down menu, I was amazed at how low the quotes were, we are being screwed over by insurance companies when declaring a tank as a modification >:(
-
Go compare gas the option to add water tank as a modification but you will only get a few results back and they will be quite a bit more than without the tank
-
Alexander Swan were cheaper than A-plan this year for me.

Shocking isn't it!
The temptation to not declare the tank is strong.
The way I look at it, your not lying if the question of having a tank isn't asked and you've filled in every other question honestly.
-
Mines not declared.
Its not a fitted permanent feature it's a tank of water with a ratchet strap. Its carriage of good imo.
Besides had a dink last year and lost my no claims so it's gone up to 500 from 300 as it is.
Like said above I've answered all the questions on go compare and no where does it say have u got a tank fitted. How am I supposed to know if I'm not asked.
-
I'm with Adrian flux. They were a good £400 cheaper the Alexander swan for me. I mentioned the tank and that it is ratchet strapped in and they said it is classed as carriage of goods as it is not a permanent modification. Might be worth giving them a call.

That's who I'm with at the moment but my tank is bolted in. If I wasn't to declare the tank I can get insurance from confused.com for half what I paid last year :o. The really annoying thing is I could put the tank in with bloomin cable ties and in the process put my life and others at risk and I would get a better deal from the insurance underwriters, madness.
-
Gladiator worked out at £160 fully comp and no issue with the water tank.
-
Its so wrong.
You bolt a tank down and its costs double.
Yet you can carry anything, have it going all over and its cheaper.
this is why I use straps.
Robbing sods

Are you all business insured on your vehicles?

Thanks for the info, I went on this site and got a quote from MORE TH>N business for £262 with tank declared, which is £100 cheaper than I paid last year, doesn't include courtesy van tho.

not bad

How do you guys get it so cheap?Mines just over £1000 with aplan for a vivaro with 650ltr tank bolted down.
-
I think you will find that the minute you go over 350L it puts a lot of underwriters off the list , also madness i know but if a tank is bolted it is classed as a mod , if strapped and easily removed its not a mod , its all red tape and cash cows as most will be using more than a 350 L and they know this as fact , hence why i use a 350 and have it strapped to a removable frame that is bolted to the original eye loading anchor points , therefore no mod to the original chassis has occured .
Looks like i found the loopholes by pure chance !
-
Aviva didnt class my tank as a mod. About £250 cheaper than A plan.
5oo ltr BTW
-
Post codes make a huge difference.
At my old house with a bolted in 650L tank declared as a modification no points on my licence 10+NBC transit 330 the premium was £380, in janurary, I moved 3 miles into a small low crime town same postal town CM6 and my insurance shot up and extra £25 a month. I did quotes for a new policy as I thought the insurance company was ripping me off, but no the new postcode is goIng to cost me an extra £200 per year.

I've been with Gladiator for 4 years now...cheap and no worries with system.

Ditto.
Mines due for renewal in a few weeks, they'll send me a high quote, il find a lower quote on one of the comparison sites, ring gladiator and they'll usually match or beat it.
Havnt had to switch for 3 years now, usually pay around £300 for the year.

I've insured with them about four times and they've always been very good. No issues with a pick up and 400 litre tank whatsoever, or going off road to fill up. Very reasonable bunch.

I was with gladiator but when i asked for confirmation in writing for the water tank they said yes but i never got it,must `ve called them a dozen times.Direct line where worse they said the water tank was fine so went ahead when i recieved policy there was no mention of the water tank. When i rang them they said they dont cover water tanks. You need to be carefull they`ll tel you anything to get your money you need to check youre actually covered

Seems there's a few Cheap Charlie's here that just buy on price not the level of cover.

Bolted my tank to original anchor points also.
I used Aviva this year. £250. The water tank was declared (as it needs to be) but no difference in price. Also with Aviva van insurance you can drive other cars 3rd party only (this is very rare for van insurance)

Damn straight.
Insurers have had enough money from me since the age of 18, for what? The presumption that something MAY happen. Well I've never made a claim in 13 years.
All I care about is getting insurance for as cheap as possible, not the level of cover. After all, what are you actually getting from your insurance? Nothing but a piece of paper if you don't make a claim.
-

I decide what level of cover I'm looking for ( NCB protected, low excess ) then go with the cheapest quote. Don't see anything wrong with that.
-
Believe me I'm not a fan of insurance companies by any means.
But I don't want to give them an excuse to wriggle out of paying if the worst should happen.
And I've got it in black and white from the broker that my van is equipped with water tank/system.
-
I agree.Ihad an accident last year {not my fault]my van was written off and the insurance company have still not paid out for the courtesy van i had through aplan.Altough the amount they charged for it i dont blame them
-

The level of cover and the price seem to be entirely different entities. I see many expensive policies that cover very little and many cheap ones that cover much.

Urban myth mate, insurance companies couldn't give a toss if your tanks bolted in or not, the modification question is only there to check if you have done anything to the vehicle that might make it unsafe for road use.
Its a nice easy way to squeeze a few quid extra from customers but wouldn't leave you uninsured if not declared and not
the cause of the accident/ claim.

Its all a racket, that's why I wouldn't worry about insurance companies trying to wriggle out of paying, a friend of mine has
just spent 6 weeks waiting on getting her car repaired by the insurance recommended company, one days work tops,
That's a six week courtesy car bill on top of the repair, it would have been longer if she hadn't threatened the repair company.
My accident was the same, I could have got the repair done for a quarter of the price the insurance company paid to their
recommended repair garage.
Back handers come to mind.

I've seen insurance companies refuse to pay out because of a non-declared rear spoiler, alloy wheels or in one really mad case a non-standard sound system. The terms & conditions are just that - terms & conditions. Some insurance companies will weasel out of their responsibilities but we are not afforded the same option. My last quote wouldn't cover me to drive across my field to fill up with water as " No Off Road Cover " meant " No Off Road Cover " - reasonableness or sanity wouldn't prevail. I was told in no uncertain terms that If I did this my entire policy would be void - how they thought they were going to prove it I have no idea.
Insurance Companies are at best inflexible and at worst crooked. I wouldn't take out any cover and risk anything. I will ask them specifically what they do and don't cover and buy only on that basis.

Firstly you can put what ever terms and conditions you want in a contract and I can agree to them but they wont override
my rights under the law.
If I'm legally allowed to drive the insured vehicle, the insured vehicle hasn't been modified to make it unsafe illegal for road
use then terms or not my insurance cant refuse to pay out, fair enough they may not cover the expense of replacing alloy wheels
or a fancy spoiler in the repair bill but that's not what we are talking about.
That said I don't for one minute think there aren't fly by night insurance companies out there that wouldn't try and get out of
paying but I think these companies should be avoided full stop.
The better more well known companies wont even check for a tank never mind try to get out of paying over one and that's from
experience.

I get where you coming from.
In the past 10 years I've had stand up arguments with quite a few insurance companies over a tank in the pickup. many of them have just been completely unreasonable, probably because it was a relatively new concept. I've had some insurer's refuse to quote simply because of the presence of a tank - irrespective of size or how / if it's secured. I've had others want a massive premium loading and just a few who were ok with the idea. It made renewal extremely time consuming and annoying. Only in the last two years or so has common sense begun to prevail and a little bit more reasonableness has come into the equation.
In terms of theft I declared my alloys and it wasn't an issue. As long as the wheels were something that the vehicle could of left the factory with the issue was small. However if you spent 2 grand on some daft 22" wheels and as result the truck was stolen for the wheels and then burnt out the insurance company would not pay out. Their premium would be calculated via location, age and likely probability of theft on the assumption that the risks were equal and any alterations disclosed. The effect of undisclosed expensive alloys would contravene their premium calculation and likely be used to avoid a payout as the customer has been dishonest in their disclosure of modifications.

Yeah i can't be bothered with all that.
I've been driving for nearly 25 years so I'm well versed in dealing with insurance companies and the frustrations that can come with it all.
I prefer to pay a bit more, put it through the accounts as an expense and have a cover that will provide me with a fully equipped van so i can carry on working if I'm involved in an accident (at fault or non fault).
I appreciate other people do things differently, each to their own.

Just tried to get a quote from gladiators. Alarm bells ringing ! Quote was really cheap with all the add ons I asked for the water tank declaration. Asked them to email full details of the quote so I have it all in writing. They said they can't put water tank in writing but they have the notes on their system only. I said I want my own evidence that I had declared my tank. Again they said "no".
The quote they emailed was very very basic with just the amount to pay. No details of the extras I had asked for either. Just a couple of sentences.
Looked at there website and you can only contact them by phone. There is no way you can prove you declared the tank. And they said they can't send out any documents other than standard letters and emails.

Just renewed mine with gladiator, £297 for the year, water tank declared. This will be my 3rd year with them, they've been great..

Did you manage to get the tank declaration in writing from them before paying up?

No issue with mine either. I wonder if pick up trucks are the way forward ?
