There are a few things to consider and a couple of tests you can do before trying to sort this table!
1. Diamond Grinding may be an option but it should be a last resort!
2. The first thing you need to do is look very carefully at the table (A Magnifier or Pocket Microscope will help) and try to determine if the table is lacquered Marble or not.
3. Look underneath the table and determine if the underside has a netting glued to it?
Once you let me know about the above I will make a few suggestions on the best way IMHO on the way to proceed!

Thank you kevin,
I will try to determine and will pay a visit , I do have a pocket microscope ,
From the info I was given (price } it was very expensive, whether this reflects the type I don't know

If you have to pay a visit then I would try and make sure you have the following with you!
Lemon Juice or Phosphoric Acid
Cotton Buds
Miracle Water Ring & Etch Mark Remover
Micro fibre Cloth
Paper Towels
Then if you ring me from site i can give you a few tests to do whilst you are there to help you quote it and best way to restore it

Hi Kevin,
My customer has got back to me re. table, and yes their is a very fine faint netting underneath.
My next move is to give her some idea of cost to see if she wishes to continue , bearing in mind the solutions you have suggested.
Would welcome your feed back on the price.
many thanks Geoff
