I never knowingly undercut anybody for work. I go in with a price im happy with for the work i do.
About 4 months ago, ive expanded a segment of my round ( 😉 ) into a small side street at the request of a customer who i was recommended by word of mouth. Now i clean 3 houses and just finishing on street today and a woman came out, said she has UK Window cleaners come for £16 to clean her house. Which is a good price. She asked me if i could give a price to beat it??
So do i give a price perhaps a quid cheaper and vue it that im saving them a trip from leeds. Or being local, do i price it the same (it is a good price for the work) and see if the UK window cleaners customer's stick to them based on their first free clean policy to win loyalty???
I posted about this company a while ago, trying to poach customers with such an offer. Thankfully i only ever lost about 3 clients, which im now thankful for.
Or more likely, she is penny pinching and she will only dump me for next shiner to come along cheaper, so not really a potential customer??
I went with latter. What would you have done??
-
I wouldn't beat the price, I'd match it and ask her why she wants to change cleaners
-
I'd price it same as I would any other job. Set your pricing structure and stick to it.
-
In other words she had a free clean now wants to look for another mug to do it for next to bugger all.. Bless her ;D ;D
-
Just price it cheaper and do it....it's not like it's a one man outfit your taking work from.
If she dumps you so be it...what have you lost...it might go the other way and she gets you more work.
-
So what happens when she tells your other custards she managed to knock your price down?

Ask if you offer a price that she’s happy with and you commit to offering her a service how do you know she wont look to jump ship at a later date?

Just undercut yerself and anybody else for that matter every time and soon you will be cleaning 60 a day on yer compact round... no probs ;D ;D Try 8 jets not 4 should do the trick if you want to go twice as fast :P

Not sure if this post is being read correctly or i didnt explain it correctly.
She wanted it cheaper didnt say about quality and so was penny pinching and what would stop her doing it again. So i chose this option which i thought would imply that i didnt take her on as a customer. And then i asked, "what would you do"
Probably confused people with my northern twang or people not understanding phrases anymore lol ;D ;D

I wouldnt worry about taking UK window cleans work
Just price it as you would normally, if its £1 less so be it, if its the same or more so be it.
they either accept or dont and you both move on either way
-
Christmas one offs I turned down 3 today, not one had any interest in getting them cleaned next year.
Expecting a few more before the weeks out.

@Nathan
You haven't clearly stated what you did. Did you take her on or not and if so at what price?
For me, like Soupy I would have priced it as it should be. If I happened to be cheaper (rare) then I would have taken it. If I happened to be the same or higher I would have said so.
-
I would have priced it the same as she was already paying then sell the fact you are a local company.

I would have said, if I undercut your cleaner then what happens when someone comes along and undercuts me. I've been in that situation and actually quoted more and justified it by explaining about marketing, equipment insurance and water ect. That said, I offer free no obligation first cleans on all new builds. My leaflet goes straight into the welcome packs. I also offer free gutter cleaning for the life of the contract so long as they have a 4 weekly clean. So basically I'm undercutting everyone. But I would never knowingly charge lower.

"She was penny pinching and she would only dump me when next shiner comes cheaper, so not really a potential customer"
I went with the latter being the above, saying not a potential customer.
So to clarify i turned it down, as she was penny pinching and wanted it cheaper than £16. Whuch was a good price and probably same as i would price. I say probably as i didnt look round property inorder to quote her, as i declined. As she wasnt potential client material.
Later in day, a woman (a friend of the client) visiting one of my clients asked me to price and clean her windows. Agreed a price and regular 4wkly schedule, as it was identical to the one i was cleaning and its just round the corner (also where i work) and she paid me upfront. Which i thought was good. About an hr later but b4 i did the new house, husband pulls up in car with wive. Saying they have electric shutters, no problem i say, as i txt b4 coming. He than gave other excuses and said after todays clean if it could be every now n then when their in and give a shout.
I said, thankyou for letting me know, heres your money back and apologies as i dont work on that basis. Thank you.
Its a great ideal if someone has a free wk or day, just go out for day offering an xmass one off clean for X amount (double/triple normal price).

Scrap that, another company does that; Uk Window cleaning offers first free clean
;D ;D
Bet there in demand this wk

It's bonkers enough to offer a free first window clean but a free gutter clean aswell ???
Are you that desprate for work? ::)roll
When you say free gutter clean I would expect the guttering/downspouts checked & cleared at least twice a year. Also the guttering fascias, soffits etc cleaned aswell for FREE... ;D ;D

Hope they realise a window cleaner is not just for christmas you know. They need love and attention all year round ;D ;D

I would have turned it down too.
Cleaning one the other day and the bloke next door said he would let me do his, his daughters and his son's place, all local, If I could 'do a deal' on all three. So I said 'do they not have window cleaners' his reply was 'yes but I am looking for a deal for all three' . I told him very politely where to go!

Are these the guys you are talking about Nathan:
http://www.ukwindowclean.com/
According to their satisfaction survey results (scroll down the page a bit) 100% of their customers are happy with them. Maybe you've found the one unhappy customer....
As for the rest of us only 42% of our customers are happy with the service we provide .... Looks like we'll all have to pull our socks up ;D

I never knowingly undercut anybody for work.
Just keep up the good work. Thats how it all works, just charge more than anyone else. When a tender comes up i try to find out the top price they've been quoted and then charge a bit more. Always charge more, can't go wrong.

i would of priced it up as i normally would and (whether it was lower or higher than uk window lickers)offered my services, take it or leave it.simple.

I'd love to have 'clients' on all of my rounds.
I only ever get customers. So unprofessional..
-
If I ever turned up at a place to quote and they were to come out with if you can do it cheaper you can have it I would just walk away, how long you gonna keep it where does it end when she keeps saying that to WCs she sees up the road. If your getting every job you quote your to cheap I don't expect to get a lot of the work I quote as I always go in higher than most,it doesn't always work going in to low either I've had people say they were to cheap I didn't think they could do a good job for that kind of price
-
Price it higher and see if she accepts the offer out of curiosity
