51 if you can. I use 38 and although the hose rarely blocks, the inlet does.

Does using 51mm make handling the poles difficult or overly cumbersome?

I've always used 51 mm and now and then reduce it down to a 38 mm hose depending what I'm doing.
The inlet size on the vac drum is 100mm so that very rarley gets bloked but can still all the same.

Hose and poles only become cumbersome when crap starts sticking and building up on the insides so makes them much heavier.
