Starting to look for a new van a year or 2 old, Ive seen a few of the transit customs 2.2l 100bhp for sale just wondered if anyone has one and do they have enough pull for a 650lt tank and all the gear. Or do i really need to be looking at a higher bhp.
thanks in advance for any input

The only difference between the 100-125-155 is the software.
Everything is the same.
You can get it remapped to 175-181 for around 375£. Does require opening up the ECU.
Just make sure the software is up to date on the van. You can check on the ETIS to make sure it is.
My advice is get a trend as a minimum. You get a lot of spec for your money.
-
I have an 850L System in a 125 custom
Even full with two men. Pulls like a train!!!
Don't even know it's there.
-
thanks mate, what model is it for the higher payloads as ive seen some that have only about 875kg . Theres so many different models it gets confusing lol. I want something basic with a good payload (just a good workhorse) not bothered about all the extras really.
-
You'll have enough guts with the 100bhp because the initial torque range is pretty similar I believe, just depends on how much power you want after the initial pull!
Agree with CFN with the model difference though. The base is ok, but after being in a rented base for a bit, in the end I went for the 125 Limited and the difference is pretty big.
Although I do wish I'd gone for the 155 now, theres more than enough power with the 125...I just want more!!!
Been in touch with Vantuner in regards to a remap, but a little iffy over it as I've got over 2years warranty left...
As a minimum, go for the 290, but I'd be looking at the 310
If you're looking at going new, they're bringing out new spec sports to the range
-
You want a minimum of a 290 minimum!!!!!
That will give you around 1000-1100 payload depending on spec swb vs lwb vs high top etc etc.
i have the 310 which is 1304kg payload.
If you go for the newer models the engine is lighter and the payloads are more somewhere between 50 and 100 kg.
So you get a 300 320 340.
330 or 340 give you 1500-1600kg payload!
270 is the one you have mentioned (cheapest)
290 or 310 trend is a good van. I know you aint bothered about spec but the price difference was a £1000. When you get things like front and rear parking sensors, folding mirrors, cruise control, stereo control on steering wheel, heated mirrors and front window etc etc It makes you think :)
We sorted out a limited connect this year and was lovely to drive 1000kg payload as well!
I wish i went for a limted but i will sell mine and get a sport or if Msport will build it a 340 swb >:( >:( >:( >:(
-
thanks guys, so basically i should be looking at a 310 trend then ( i was looking at the 290) something around a 1200kg would be perfect could go for the bigger tank.
thanks again
-
i would yeah! The base is urmmmmm poop. If you're spending decent money at least get a decent spec.
I added air con and upgraded stereo. I did want a limited but it was 16 week wait!!!
-
our 115bhp pulls ok with it two tanks and all the gear in when fully loaded it sit s on the weigh station at 5.4 tonne all in so your 650 should be ok
-
I took a test drive in one went 1 mile down the road and told him I'm going back to the garage it was gutless when empty,100-105 hp or something,I only took that one because he said I'd be impressed and find I wouldn't need an140hp van. They sell 1000s upon 1000s of 140hp vans for a reason they've got the torque when carrying weight.
-
Blue Spark sell tuning boxes to boost ps and torque, easy to fit. Very impressed with one I bought for my car, took it from 184ps 330 torque to 229ps and 380 torque, notice the difference. Considering getting one for my van now. :) 0-60 in under 6 secs ....wish my van had the same engine ;D

we use one 66 plate with brand new 850 ltr grippa set up it was a 125 and died on hills even when not full but the engines are all the same just the mapping on the ecu we had the m sport map put on it this week its a genuine ford map 180bhp pulls like hell up hill fully loaded ....cost £275 ..... i would always go for the lowest bhp and then go to a propper map guy as thats all ford do we know this as we clean all the ford commercial show rooms and was advised too by the manager there save lots of £££££

Very strange my 125 pulls like a train even full with an 850 grippa tank system.
The engine takes a good 20k to loosen up. Actaully doing just under 30mpg now.
If you have a 66 plate is it the 2.0L engine? As not impressed with them at all.

I have the 125 limited, wouldn't mind this remap on mine, as the remap is a genuine ford map, I take it your warranty is unaffected? Did u have to notify your insurance?
-
I'd be surprised if it was a genuine Ford map; the euro6 2litre engine that the m-sports has is the same engine and map as the normal sport, and so are 170ps not 180...
There is no specific 'm-sport map'
And to map the ECU you have to get at the actual ECU by getting the anti tamper bolts off and the guarding, which again, I'd be surprised if Ford would do that for you (unless you've been to Dunston)
So if you've actually had a genuine 'Ford map' I'd be very interested how you managed it as well...

Didn't you get yours mapped? I thought I'd read a post saying you had
How do you get on with the grippa split charge relay btw?

well all i know is the guy who did it is right next door to ford dose lots for them and got the map from them i didnt question him as im a window cleaner not a mechanic but it gos like hell up a hill loaded now and thats what we wanted

the guy said no need as they would need serious specialist software to be able to tell its done and as ford themselves use this company and gave him the actual map warranty unaffected ..... so we were told but were told by the ford manager also to get it done with him

It was remapped for a whole 21 days. I lost the map when it went in for a piston ecu update ::)roll
So bit miffed on paying out again.
Urm fine why? It charges two batteries just fine.

Lol don't worry, it's not a loaded question!
I had an arguement with an auto electrician a month or two ago. He was adamant that he'd seen them fitted an they didn't work very well, where my point was that I knew of a few that used them with no issues
I meant to ask a while ago if I'm honest! How long before you have to bench charge the leisure battery?(if at all)
@ boldy, would you mind sending me details for the chap that did your map?
I'm in contact with vantuner at the moment (who comes highly regarded) but if this chap is able to do it with Fords blessing then I'd be more interested in that
(I have the Euro 5, but I'd assume he'd have maps for that as well if he's in with Ford as you say!)

That's ok thought it was a trap :D :D
They are 3 years old in May next year.
Currently they both power the system. I have two electric reels but only use the cox reel twice a week. Power up HD reel is used every day i work.
I drive 13 miles to work, stop. Then generally do about 5 - 6 moves in the day. 13 miles home. Some days i work in one street clean 15 - 20 houses then go home.
I have charged them once i think maybe* twice.
As for not working i would agree with that in a sense. My last van had a split charge relay and i went through 3 batteries in 2 years. Each one died on me. The SCR was £23...... Make of that what you will.

Good to know, thanks 👍👍👍
Problem with a normal charging unit (you probably already know) is the canbus, you can code it in but anyone with IDS wont touch it (even dealers)
I've actually managed to speak to a bloke at Dunston, but nothing came from it so....for now i think i'm just going to go for the sterling equivalent of the grippa one
From your experiance, looks like I'll be safe with powering two reels and charging once every one/two months (110ah bat) for now so thanks for the info

https://www.facebook.com/RHTuning/ is his page he is in with the plymouth ford i dont know about ford in general

Never ever heard of canbis issues. Canbus is a low voltage checking system I thought to identify faults like faulty bulbs etc.
Are you sure you ain't getting confused with intelligent charging. That came in on the ford transit custom in 2014 and slightly before then on crappy stop and go eco bollox. Mine doesn't have any issues. The connect was a new van. So needed a slightly more expensive SCR from Grippa.
The next two Grippa systems are having twin batteries for a one man operator. We have a van witn twin batteries for one man and is great. Only coz all vans will have leccy reels in eventually.
-
Yeah I know about the issues with the regenerative braking (I dont have stop/start) but you also get issues if you try and power through the CAN (basically trying to replicate the same concept as a van with twin batteries but with a relay in the middle) the dash throws up a load of lights like an Xmas tree
You can code it in as above post, therefore giving you permanent twin batteries but its a mare (reason I wanted to do it that way was once I've had enough of the van, I was tempted to convert into a mini camper or alike)
Either way, looks like I'm going for the split you have (or same sort of thing)
@boldy - looks a decent outfit, the only issue I have is that they're 'in with the plymouth branch' and not Ford in general...
If your van goes pop, they aint going to say 'ah well, the plymouth dealer said it was ok so we'll let him off and fix it...'
Either way, this post has made me re email martyn @ vantuner, I'm booking it in for Jan lol
