Title: Electrical extension cable for 3300w Gutter Vac
Post by: Tom-01 on December 06, 2016, 01:23:48 pm
Hi guys

I have a new vac which is 3300w - struggling to find a extension cable big enough to power it - does anyone have one or know where I can get one?

Thanks
Tom

Arctic flex. 2.5mm

Not sure if this one is man enough?    http://www.mad4tools.com/defender-25mtr-cable-extension-reel-230v16a-e86475-3472-p.asp?gclid=Cj0KEQiA4JnCBRDQ5be3nKCPhpwBEiQAjwN1bi7WBJ2X2_fMlRUgrRGthBRWEVYlaP9OhKcIXJXGxnkaAtLC8P8HAQ

Thanks Dave.

I think I found the problem. We've done 4 jobs with the new 3300w vac. Two of them we used our extension lead and it was fine. Two others wouldn't work with the extension but did with the vac plugged straight into the socket (minus the extension cable).

So back at the unit I tried it with the generator and extensions cable and it worked fine. Problem is the generator is a beast and needs two people to move it. Need a new generator basically which is on my list.

Which jenny would be best for a 3300w machine?

Thanks
Tom

You probably want 4kva, maybe 5kva. They weigh a ton which is why I sold my guttervac, downsized and use customers electric.

I think domestic extension reels have a thermal cut out built in. 3300W is drawing more power than your immersion tank at home. You need thicker cable and sockets for the job, probably run ok with one motor or maybe two but all three would be too much.

You will need a 5 Kva generator. You can use a standard 3120 watt cable ( I think that is what they are) from B & Q.
We have used them on 4200 watt vacs.
A 4200 cannot run on a 13 amp fuse....but it does. I am sure that the rating is the start rating, not the run rating.

Good generator but the weight of a twelve stone man. I bolted mine in a trailer but what a faff and what a racket when it was running.

Looks like that generator has 16 amp sockets?

I use to use 32 amp with 4200w vacs.
That stephill 6.5kva in the link has both 16 & 32 amp 110v and 240v sockets.

Yes it has both sockets. I don't use the vac on full power unless needed, need to make sure the reel is fully unwound as it'll over heat!
The 32amp reels seemed to be 110v

Thanks everyone for your replies, very helpful.

Can that generator be moved and lifted by one person easily enough?

No, not easily. They are friggin heavy - 12stone or 75kg dry. You can buy wheels and arms for them so you can shuffle them about like a wheelbarrow.

Thanks Dave. Is it heavier than a GX390 pressure washer with wheels and handle?

I can lift it into the back of my pickup but the proper answer is, No it's not easy to lift and should be done by two men.
