Been carpet cleaning 20 years and this happened for the first time recently. Got a regular customer who I do tons of work for. Been cleaning her same lounge carpet for about 7 years regularly. Last time it smelled for ages afterwards until it eventually cleared. Cleaned it the same way with same machine and same chemical. Any ideas why it should suddenly smell this time?
Thanks

Something different happened out of your control .
Ie. She went out after the job and shut all the doors and window s
She got a dog

You get them sometimes as Neil has said it will be down to drying time if its a sort of sweaty sock smell. It might have been the last time you cleaned it, it took a bit longer to dry and the bacteria multiply but die off when its dry. You go and clean it again and the smell starts worse this time. A good spray of formula 429 will help prior to cleaning and after and use airmovers to dry it quicker on the next clean. Most of the carpets that do this are thick synthetics.

Thanks for replies. BTW its open plan so no doors, and no animals. But I will get some formula 429. I've always used Craftex Clean Cotton Carpet Deodoriser. Do you think Formula 429 is better?

I have used the craftex stuff loads cotton, cherry and mint they are not as strong as formula 429 which imo is far better at getting rid of smells. As I said the smell does go itself after a while as the moisture in the carpet dries out but it will be there next time you clean it. I had a problem many years ago and had to lift all the carpets in the house and spray the backs with 429. It fixed the problem. I use a mask if spraying a lot of it as I find that it gives me the cold and or sore throat which I think is because it kills good germs in my throat as well. Just my opinion.

We've used 429 and Multiphase, and Multiphase is quite impressive - you have to spray it heavy, and quite concentrated (can't remember rec'd rate, but we put it neat into an in-line, which dilutes at 8:1).

it works really well...........................
