As I mentioned in a previous thread we started using go cardless this year and it is working very well for us. From next year I plan to only offer this payment option to new customers, then the following year all existing customers that dont use it will have to swap over.
To those that already only offer this to new customers, do you find people not wanting to use you as a result of this? If so what % of people end up going somewhere else for their window cleaning?

we only offer DDs (not go careless but another provider) and it works brilliantly.
we went through a stage where we would accept cheque payment if they insisted they didn't want to pay by DD. then we had about 60% signup to DD and the rest not.
when we changed to DD only we get about 80% signup. its much easier to sell something when you are confident in your decision not to accept anything else.
we make them signup for DD before we will do their 1st clean
i definitely won't be going back to offering any other options.
the hardest bit is changing your current customers over to DDs.
we have i think 20 customers left paying chq or SO and so last week i closed the old bank account and have told those customers their SO s no longer work so they need to cancel them and signup to DD..
I'm going to doorstep any stragglers in 2 weeks and then cancel anybody who is adamant they won't pay.
the way i see it, buy DD we cut out loads of mistakes in payment, queries are really easy to sort fast, refunds are easy to process, and the customer gets loads of security benefits. its win win all round

Of course you will lose a chunk but it's like owt else if you really want to do it then you have to just do it and push on.
Guaranteed you will lose work.
% wise whoever works the round will have the best idea of what people are like and how they want to pay
-
Bold move. Too bold for me.
I'm out.

we haven't lost a chunk. just a few I;d say. when you're confident and you're happy to walk away, you end up getting the sale in most cases.
some will say they won't do it, but then call back later and have changed their mind.
the number of times Ive had customers say 'read my lips I won't do it..' and then weeks later have gone and done it.
even had an older lady open up her first ever bank account last week so that she could have us clean her windows. that supprised me!

I think the older generation is going to be your biggest challenge, as some won't have an email address.

do you need email addresses to use Go Cardless then?

Yes you do need an email address

Yes. You are not allowed to sign people up they need to do it themselves. GoCardless's only drawback.

If you use Cleanner Planner and have Gocardles link on web site you can do it for them, just get their bank details an email address. Might be frowned upon though ;D

As soon as GoCardless catch on they will disable your account.

I like this idea, but only for our domestic windows cleaning rounds.
I might start doing this next year and have two tickets. One for domestic window cleaning customers and one for the rest (one off work)

go cardless looks great, but there were some things i didnt like, when i looked into it
that the custoemr has to respond to an email to set-up
that you cant set them up over the telephone
that the customers get reminders when their payments go through
that you had to request payments off them rather than them go thru automatically
some of that might have changed now though. what i did like about go cardless was that the price is amazing, and rob has intergrated it with cleaner planner

It's 1% isn't it? That's quite a lot over a year. I don't know what the OP is turning over, but if it's £1/2m (probably more) that's £5,000.

Compared to all other methods with the exception of bacs, 1% is very little.

Am I the only one that likes good old cash?

Depends who you bank with.

If you have free banking it's £0 v £5,000. So it does depend.

Not really. In the example you gave there is £500,000 worth of payments. GoCarldess is click one button once a day/week or month regardless of volume. Try processing £500,000 worth of payments for £5k
So it doesn't depend.

We're a husband and wife team, so we manage it for nothing at the moment, but I do see the point you are making. Even with that sort of volume, it's no more than an hour or so a day reconciliation, Add to that if you go 100% the amount of customers you will lose.

1 hour reconciliation + everything else.

Last word freak! :P

go cardless looks great, but there were some things i didnt like, when i looked into it
that the custoemr has to respond to an email to set-up Via your website is by far and away the best method of sign up
that you cant set them up over the telephone Yup
that the customers get reminders when their payments go through For me that's an advantage, the last thing you want is your customers being charged by the bank for overdrawn payments, all direct debits should be like this in my opinion. It's a rarity that it happens anyway.
that you had to request payments off them rather than them go thru automatically One click, as many payments as you like (via cleanerplanner), not sure but I think automatic is an option too.
some of that might have changed now though. what i did like about go cardless was that the price is amazing, and rob has intergrated it with cleaner planner

thanks Soupy.
Go careless certainly looks good and I have another company where I probably will use it.
signing people up over the phone is a huge advantage for me

It's a biggie. My main issue previously was identifying people who had signed up, if you didn't have the email address it could be difficult. They have sorted that now. I'm hoping that eventually they will sort the sign up process too.
