Title: I can smell gas
Post by: duncan h on August 03, 2016, 09:07:21 pm
Went to this old guys house. He always open French doors and pays me. Went today and he was asleep, So I make a noise cleaning windows. Still asleep with mouth wide open. I ended up braying on French doors to waken him. Thought he was dead. He had a stroke 2 years ago and only just got ok. He opened doors and gas hit me in the face. I told him and he asked me to look in kitchen. Top grill was on full but not ignited. Apparently he tried to light it 2 days ago and it would light (with matches) and must have forgot about it. If I hadn't gone, he would be dead for sure. He had main oven numpty pulled off so he didn't do the same thing, so I pulled his grill numpty off and told him to buy a electric hob.

Wow, hes one lucky chap this time!

Not quite the same, i had a custy who died just before she was 101. But for the last 2 yrs of her life, she sat in this rocking chair and quite often just dose off, even if u were speaking to her. I cleaned her windows n inside windows for last 14yrs n her son lived over rd. But it used to frighten the life out of me every 4wks. I would just wait at the window before cleaning it,  until i saw signs of her breathing. Because i also didnt want to startle the old lass n she dies of an heart attack!!

Lucky you found him in time, how old is he ? Does he have any family or visitors ? I know we are just the window cleaners but I do worry for some of the elderly ones sometimes. it maybe  interfering  but if he has not got anyone else looking out for him maybe it should be mentioned to social services ? Not only could he have snuffed it he could have caused an explosion and risk to others.

95 ish. His daughter works for the BBC in London. She stays at his every other weekend. He has a friend who visits and takes him shopping. Unfortunately, she  was on holiday. In an ideal world. All single retired people should get a call from someone every day. That will never happen

Some good many years ago I had a customer who had left something on the cooker and gone upstairs. She had also been reading a newspaper and left it open on the work surface next to the cooker. As I was cleaning the kitchen window a gust of wind blew through the open back door and lifted the top sheet of paper straight off and across the top of the cooker.  It caught fire instantly. There was no time to shout up to her so I just dashed into the kitchen grabbed the corner of the paper and took it outside and let it burn up in the garden. I've often wondered what the outcome might have been if I'd not been there that day.
