Hi, I have a tray inside my navara which I love because I can pull it way out with the reel on and point it it anywhere and then simply push the tray back. One problem I have is the tank has to be raised of the truck bed to allow the tray to travel under. For some reason I find this annoying, I don't know why.
I'm going to change the tank soon and I'm debating if I should take the tray out. Do you think I should? What puts me off a little is the what to do with the reel. I like the reel to sit on the dropped tailgate, but how do I stop it falling off and also move it to new directions. Im not permanently fixing it to the tailgate because the weight will be too much to lift. any help

I'm thinking some sort of turntable with lock down hinges...

You might say that

Sadly, they are on the way out :'(
Not sure what I'm gonna use in future, I'm not a fan of Japanese 4x4s and vans are gay.

I did once have a turntable, but what would happen is when I pulled the hose out the turntable would spin from side to side and it made it difficult. I like the landy idea, but it looks custom built

They are. Many hours work and £1000s spent.
They may be coming up for sale in the not too distant future, but, even if you just wanted a nosy at them I'm most likely pretty far from you.

Would the reel really be too heavy on the tailgate? It's what I was going to do when I nearly bought a pick up.
-
the tailgate can easily take take the weight of a reel, they can take my full weight which is saying something. They are heavy to lift shut and if the reel was permanently fixed to the tailgate I think it would way to heavy to close all day long. my idea is to drop the tailgate and lift the reel onto it. but I need a way to fix it there and to be able to angle it in the right direction. I have reel bracket which I could use, but I would need a few. I'm tempted to try a turntable again, but last time it worked to well and the table would swivel all over the place. does anyone think this would work

Why not just put a hose roller in front of the reel?
-
I have two reels in back of my navara the bottom bar of the reels bolted to the universal channels in the truck bed so that they pivot forwards and backwards drop tailgate pull reel forwards do job they rest on tailgate then push back and lift tailgate.
-
I don't think hose roller would work because there's not enough space for reel and roller on the tailgate., the reel just fits. If I left the reel in the truck bed you can't reach over the tailgate to wind the hose back in. I'm interested in the reels bolted to the channels, but I can't picture it in my mind. Any chance of a pic

Cant be that difficult to make a swivel plate with a locking pin ?
any fabricators should be able to knock one up .
-
I have an idea that may work depending on how much space you have between the tank and tailgate being closed.
It would need you to drill a hole through floor pan though - you could use a bearing and some washers and a bolt to make a pivot bolted through a piece of wood and the truck bed, mount the reel to it ( would also have some useful degree of pivot to it as well ) I hope the very primitive pic helps explain what I mean but basically you would bolt the reel to the wood ( brown square ) and bolt a bearing to its corner ( the white circle ) so it could swing out when tailgate down.
-
I will try and put some pics up tomorrow my mates a welder and he made them for me they just bolt into the threaded blocks that fit in the universal channels was easy to do.when they are on tailgate you can reach to reel in no problem.

I know about the blocks in the channels, I've never figured out what they do. Pics would be great

I'm thinking some sort of turntable with lock down hinges...
Me too and everyday could be a record day.

This shows where I have bolted the hose reel bar to the universal channels, the bottom bar is sleeved with approx a one inch bar and welded - hope this helps.

This shows where the reels sit on the tailgate when in use.

Just as an aside;
Have you had any chassis issues with your Navara and are you aware of the freebies that Nissan are chucking around at the moment ?

This is what I had made, I work with the tailgate up, as mentioned the tailgate is heavy so opening and shutting that all day wouldnt have been my thing. I have also upgraded reel to a PowerUp one to, its a dream to work out of, lift up the lid and away to go. If works close I leave the lid open and drive round like that.

Thanks for the pics. Something I don't understand is how do you push the reel back into the cab. Does the reel pivot up and slide down the channel? Also, would you recommend a hose guide bolted down on the tailgate. Cheers
-
LWC - that looks a nice set up. What size tank is it?
This is my set up. The reel sits on a wooden frame that slots down either side of the tailgate so it wont move while your reeling in and out. To move it back lift slightly and slide back. has worked for me for the past 5 years. not the best pic but all i had on the computer that was the right size to upload. I think this might work for me. How does the board fix onto the tailgate? Any chance you can post pic of the fitting. Also, how do find working with the hose guide?
