Hi all , my tap water TDS is now 250 ppm , I changed resin on the 9th July , it's now gone upto 001ppm ( 1 litre vessel ) . At this rate I will be using 52 Ltrs a year , is this about right?
-
I assume it's going through an RO first??
Either way I'd say a litre a week isn't too bad.
Buy a bigger bottle and go double-DI if you want to save on resin. A 1L bottle isn't big enough.
-
Yeah , sorry should of said , it goes through RO first . Does tap TDS vary throughout the year?

Depends on your supplier. Mine doesn't.

You do ask a very difficult question. There are so many factors that come into play. The first question I would like you to answer is. At what tds do you feel happy to clean glass with. If you change your resin like many do at the first sign of a lift of tds 0/1 they change resin. Or will you be wise and leave it till at least 10. I personally only change resin some were between 10 and 15 tds and have never had a problem. But this is in the case of my water in the South of England.

Lowest here 250, highest 415.

tap tds 029.
3-4 bags of resin a year(£240-£320)
7000L-8000L a month(roughly) x 10 months(2 months off a year)=70,000-80,000L per year.
DI only.

About a year ago I fitted a tap on my ro outlet so the first 10 or 20 litres go to waste when I start mt 4040 up at night. This has made a dramatic effect on the amount of resin I use.
-
Shrek if I can remember you said the TDS after your RO was around 7ppm, so the answer is you're well above norm
even for a heavy user of water.
At your TDS you're talking about one or two 11litre vessel fills a year depending on usage and how OCD you are on keeping the
water at zero.

I like to keep it as close to 000 as possible

Cheers vin , I could've sworn my tap water TDS was a lot lower a while back

6-7 bags a year based on double 11 ltr di method with tap tds of 76ish and roughly use about 4-500 litres a day.
i use the mb115 resin too!
-
I change my 11 litre vessel about every 4 months though I do have a water softener built into my system which makes it longer lasting!

Is that between £5-600 a year? seems a lot for low TDS ???

Water softener, that's interesting.... does it lower your TDS before it get to RO? or how does it work?
-
I have an 11 litre water softener vessel which stands next to my resin one. I change the salt every month. Salt costs pennies! So on fill it goes through softener before resin which brings the tds down even further!

I pay £70 a bag which lasts me 2 months-ish and when you think about the money we make from it, can't complain really!!
I can't ro as I don't want a big tank in my front garden then having to get a pump to transfer to van etc I'd rather just fill the van from the tap then di as I go, when I've looked at ro I don't think I'd save a great deal every year having to buy all the stuff then changing a 4040 ro membrane etc :-\
So double di works fine for me but I'd be interested if these water softener above works to save more resin?

You could set up an RO in your Van as they don't take up much room, not joking as long as you're not metered with a
TDS of 76ppm you should be making pure for pennies.

Mufcglen,
My last 4040 membrane lasted 6 years so that less than a pound a week, it takes my water down from around 250ppm
to between 4 and 8ppm.
With your TDS I cant see you getting any worse than these results maybe a little better.
I spend about £40 a year on pre filters.
I could easily get a year from a 11lt bottle of resin if I wanted to keep the water at Zero.
Over 5 years you will have spent over £3k and I'm talking around £800 with a far higher TDS.
-
Cheers guys good points and I have thought about doing it directly into van tank with no transfer tank,I have a transit with a 650 tank and plenty of room to fit a 4040 with prefilters but how long would it take to fill a tank like that doing the ro method?
I connect to the tap at the front of the house and it takes about 30 mins to fill up at moment.
-
If it runs st 393 Ltrs per hour ... Then .... 1.5 hours for a 650 ltr tank?
-
That's not bad at all and suppose I could get a booster pump too if needed but if I could fill 500 litres-ish in less than 2 hours I'd be happy with that, is there any 4040 ro's that are better than others and I presume I'd need to have an outlet pipe on the van for waste water?
Any recommendations where to buy a 4040?
-
A 4040 ro would fill your 5to 650 ltr tank in about 2hours maybe 3 ,having a 4040 ro would save you quite a bit of money each year if tds is about 079
-
using a bag every 4 weeks now ive changed the filters in the merlin , was down to a bag every 3 weeks we use around 3000lt aday

Cheers Colin , somethings not right then, what size DI vessel do you use?

6l mate I normally get three months from onebottle,I change filters and resin at the same time, and flush system when I remember, probably once a month,.
Ro only last a year and has done for nine years,I get all my stuff from purefreedom

Yes once a year,as the tds starts rising quicker from the ro before it gets to the resin, after about 11 months,it used to concern me ,when others were gettin much more time out of there ro,but after 9 years I feel that's all the ro can do due to the tds
-
Iv got a pure freedom ro , got the membranes from daqua, filters from gardiners and 1ltr di from pure freedom, it's comes out of the RO at 002 then goes through resin , that's what I don't get why it's only lasting a week ???

Even when my 40 40 ro is new it still comes out between 25 to 30 b4 resin but I always get three months out of my 6l bottle before having to change resin

Colin,
Something is very wrong with your system, a 4040 membrane should last 5 years, they fail because the tiny holes in the membrane break down ( get wider) or get blocked.
Possible causes.
Putting too much pressure on the membrane, closing off the waste too much.
RO shock which is caused by applying the pressure to quickly onto a dry membrane.
Chlorine getting to the membrane.
Sediment getting to the membrane.
Some sort of bacteria or growth in the membrane vessel, needs disinfected before the next membrane change.
Not enough water pressure to start with causing the tds to rise quicker than it should as the membrane gets older, which is my
hunch on what your problem is going by the new membrane TDS readings.
Either way at £250 a year to change I would be looking at getting this sorted.
-
I had a similar problem to Colin.
My HF5 membrane was goosed after 12 months and was hoping to get a lot longer than that out of it.
PSI in 40-50 and twin 10 inch prefilters. 10 min flush prior to each fill (about 1500L per week).
Bought the membrane from Pure Freedom. What baffles me is I didn't change anything from my previous membrane and that lasted three years ???
