Title: How do you price?
Post by: jo5hm4n on July 08, 2016, 11:11:02 am
Okay, got a few FSG jobs coming up soon, just going to clean with WFP not cleaning out the gutters just cleaning the face of all plastics.  How do you work out your pricing for this?  Don't want to overcharge or undercharge if i can help it!

Thanks

Price wise varies quite a bit depending what part of the country you happen to live in. To be honest I think that's all in the mind of the cleaners myself as the saying goes "if you don't ask you don't get." I've found most people will pay more if they know they are going to get a good job done and more importantly done safely too whatever methods you choose to use be it by wfp, softwash or by hand using ladders.

Some fsg plastics are dead easy to wash over using a wfp, just tap or pure cold water but other can be a pita to do too. That's when you start looking at ways to try making the job easier and get the best possible results for the least effort & time.

Best advice I can give is just quote what you want for each job and go from there.

Why not practice on your own house, or a friends house, and do about 5 metres and see how long it takes you.
Allow for how bad they are when you quote, obviously if they are really bad they will take longer.
Once you think how long it will take you then use your window cleaning rate per hour and add some. Then add a bit more on top.
Always use the custys tap and always use some virosol or similar and let it dwell for 5 mins. Clean the downpipes too and other little extras that are white. Little tip, I always finish the underside of the gutter and soffit with a 'towel turban'. My missus uses one when she washes her hair (it's like a small towel thing that fits on their head, stops their hair dripping). Unlucky for her it also fits very nicely on my brush and a quick whip along the underside and all is dry (no annoying drips hanging).
Don't tell the missus  ;D

Don't use customers tap water because you will get hard water all over their windows.

Work out a price per metre you're happy with, and go with that. Add extra £50 here and there if they're filthy, high, difficult etc.

Talk up the job to the customer 'ooh it's a nice house, lovely size, it will look so much better better with all your PVC gleaming, we'll even do the windows and garage door in the price for you' (They're going to get wet and dirty anyway, plus you add the cost onto your price). Sell it as a specialist service - they're not going to go up a ladder themselves and clean by hand. Do a test patch to show them the difference.

Some you'll be surprised how much you can a charge and get the job, others will expect a £30 job. Don't be annoyed if you don't get all of them. You're better off doing 2 jobs than 3 and still earning the same money.

Thanks
Tom

I priced a bungalow up the other week £10 for Windows, old lady said that's ridiculously expensive it's only 20 minutes work. I used to get them done £4 every other month but my window cleaner stopped coming  ::)roll

Anyways , I said to wash your fascias its £60 ( about an hours work) ..... She said that's reasonable.
So she won't pay me £10 for 20 mins work to do her windows but she'll pay me £20 for 20 mins work on her fascias..... I told her I'm too busy  ;D

Don't waste pure on FSG jobs unless you have no choice, your going to dirty the customers windows anyway so add on a free
window clean to the cost if you get my meaning.
The extra pressure from the tap will also speed up the clean.

Totally agree with this, even if your in an area where you have no chance of getting this price then your better off without as you don't want to be doing this type of work for anything less.

Your shoulders might ache after 5 minutes doing fsg so have a good stretch before you leave the house.

i find its quicker to use pure water for most add ons unless its  a large job.saves faffing about with extension hose on outside taps and you can clean the windows straight away afterwards but this is also because i use very hot water.

I've also found it's not ideal to wfp with tap water if you're in a hardwater area like me either especialy if using any sort of chems as you don't really want either getting on and/or drying on glass.

not sure i quite agree with that, yes if your flat out busy and havent got the time you want to make it worth your while going out of your way doing extras, maybe working late or on a weekend it makes sense.

but if you have the time then dont see why you cant do it at "window rate" whatever that is for you...
If you can get 50-60 ph then by all means but  i would seriously struggle to get £120 to clean a conny (2 hours work)

Maybe next time when you are asked for a price to do a conservatory get them to ask for a quote first from thomas sanderson and then see what they say about you wanting £120. I'm suspecting they will snap yer hand off  ;D ;D

you dont have to agree.charge what you want.however i personally find add ons harder work than maintenance window cleaning and it takes me away from my schedule.im pretty busy most of the time but not mad busy(i dont want to be).30-35 hours a week is enough for me.i very rarely work weekends anymore or work past 4pm because i like to have a better work/life balance. :)
