Title: Drones for gutter clear out inspections?
Post by: Lee Burbidge on July 08, 2016, 06:24:10 am
Gutter clearing Inspections: In this film Rich Atkin demonstrates a new toy, the Phantom 4. Now the Phantom 4 is an extremely expensive kit, weighing in at £1440... and that does not include the tablet of which you have to buy yourself separately... but technology is getting cheaper and the drones are getting even smaller. The question open to debate here is; Can drones assist with gutter inspections for your window cleaning business?

Rich  has no intention of using this for gutter clearing of any sort..... the question and debate surrounds can it be used commercial in general... we had fun playing with it... here is a company that uses drones to check gutters as an example in surveys. Like I said there are a lot of rules and licence considerations plus business DD such as PL insurances and aviation rules to consider  and you would have to speak to the CAA and get permission to use commercially. http://flyingeyeuk.com/services/surveys-and-inspections.html#

One of my customers has a company that does aerial surveys using a drone.
He had to do a course with the CAA and demonstrate competence.
Business is affected by wind and rain just like us windies.

I think it's one of those let's wait and see. They would have to come down in price a lot!!! Considering you can get a wifi camera that links into your phone for less than £50 and you can attach it to a wfp!!

No, because as it stands they cannot legally be flown within 50 m of any building.  A specialist firm with the right qualifications / license and permission, as you've said, may be able to offer this service but I doubt it will ever filter down to run of the mill small window cleaning firms or sole traders given the CAA's rules as they stand ( sure there aren't drone police on every street corner, its down to an individual whether or not they wish to stay within the law -  something I suspect  your mate Rich Atkin was breaking
 ;D ;D ;D ).

+1

I've mounted a cheap Canon powershot to the top of a pole and recorded what was in the gutters simply by walking around pointing the lens bit at the gutters.

It does the job spot on.

By the time you and your mate were pratting about I could have done a proper gutter cam survey, given a quote and booked the work in too. So no I think they are a useless toy for a real gutter clearing pro.  ;D ;D ;D

A whole new business opportunity has come up to take out rogue drones too.
