Title: What's your ppm after RO ? and how long does your resin last?
Post by: Shrek on June 22, 2016, 01:25:14 pm
Hi all , iv brought this up before but iv still got the same problem and don't know where I'm going wrong?!
180ppm from tap , 002 after RO , so 002 going into 1ltr resin vessel has lasted about 2 weeks going from 000 Ppmto 002 ppm ???
Fresh resin , new filters , membranes got in September last year  , anyone got any ideas?

Id be as happy as larry if i were you and certanly wouldnt use resin.
I let mine get to 10 before changing, mine is 360 in from tap then 015 through RO and resin lasts 2/3 months before hitting 10.
I supply water to a few local cleaners and guys who sub from me and make roughly 4000 litres over 24 hours each day mon to fri.
If save a fortune if was coming out at 002 without resin.

My readings are almost identical to Micks....

I have an 11 litre DI vessel. Maybe you could try a larger one or double DI?

A few have said that mick! I can't understand why my resin isn't lasting even though the water going in is only 002 ppm!  ???
I think it's a confidence thing that iv always used 000 ppm , iv ordered some resin from gardiners so il see if that makes a difference as the current stuff is from pure freedom. I make about 1000 Ltrs a week

Cheers Dave , I was thinking that at first but if a 1 ltr resin vessel lasts about 2 weeks , then an 11 ltr will last 2 1/2 months or there abouts ? should last a lot longer as my TDS is so low out of RO  ???

A 1 litre resin vessel is about as useful as a punch in the chops mate

Everything you've put sounds about right in regards to your readings, its just that 1 litre of resin doesn't last that long if you're using it every day

I used to have one before getting a 25litre one, ingoing TDS of about 6 and it'd last around 2 weeks until it slowly started to creep up

Over yr ive gone from a 10" di to using two 10's.  Then went onto using a 20" resin and that lasted me about 2 -3wks before creeping up. Once starts to creep it soon shoots up.
I then went on to use a 4.5ltr di and that lasted ne about 2 months. Much less than i thought or hoped it would.
My tap was close to 300ppm and by end of  ro it was down to 11 and still burnt thru di.

Then learnt about tds creep and also if u fasten di too tight it causes channels in di resin and uses it quickly. Dont pack it tight enough tho and you get pockets in it and soon disolves.
I now use a booster pump and by end of ro my ppm is 006 so now i dont bother with di. Just fills up my 1000ltr straight from ro

I also use a booster pump , how long have been cleaning with 006? have you had any complaints?

My RO is kicking out 23, needs replacing, my resin is also spent because it's only brining the water down to 20  :o, but it still cleans perfectly

Ive never had any problems using .015, but normally change crystals when it gets to .10
so if it came out of tap at that number I wouldn't use crystals at all.. Many of my customers live in
1 million pound properties and they've never mentioned anything.. like you say, its a confidence thing,
like how much do you rinse before you go on to the next window..

I usually rinse a lot when brushing and then rinse with brush off the glass , when I think of anything above 000ppm , I think of water spots .... Obviously this isn't the case after all!  ???

Ive not used resin for last 3 months now and all my work is 4wkly. No complaints and i checked when dry after my first time and didnt see any problems. So armed with that confidence i havent given it any more thought.
Because work is 4 wkly its mostly rinsing dust of windows so i have my pump on 35. 2 aggitations and final rinse all on glass. (Reality of that is actually 2 rinses)

Ive also done a couple of first cleans on minging windows and my custom is to say they may get some spotting from seals, if any problems let me kno and i will fix. Didnt get any calls and when i did 2nd clean, asked if any problems and got told no and really happy with them.
Hope this helps

Ah right! cheers nathen , think I might ditch the resin and test the water. So do you just change your RO filters every couple of months or something?

I'd get a second tds meter and check it again. You'd be surprised how inaccurate some of those meters can be.

Im probably doing this part wrong. I have a 450gpd ro system from purefreedom. So it came with 3 pre filters.
Because i had 2 spare 10" cases and a box of prefilters whrn i bought my setup from pf, ive changed ny setup.
I was suprised how much the sediment filter got dirty (nearly enough to stop u drinking water from the tap). So i now use two sediment filter (mostly to prolong life) then into a carbon filter and then into a fibredyne (?) Filter. I kno last fikter does job of the others, but like i said, they are spares. Want to prolong my last prefilter as the others cost pence in comparison.
Then i always back flush before i use ro for maybe 2/3mins.
The above may be over kill, but has been working for last 4mnths ok at mo
