Title: Membranes
Post by: john63. on June 14, 2016, 04:54:20 pm
Do you replace all of white membranes or what's inside don't think top comes off
Also how do red and blue tubes come off it was all fitted for me
Thanks (http://www.cleanitup.co.uk/smf/1465919646_image.jpeg)

The membranes are inside the white housings , the red and blue tubes all pop out of the joints, once you've done that , unscrew the ends of the white housings and the membranes are there

To clarify with red n blue pipes. They are fitted eith push fits.  Have u used push fit connections before?
I hadnt n didnt realise how to do so until i broke one trying.  So the small ringlet holding the piping, you push down on, whilst pulling the piping out.

Why do suppliers feed the waste from membrane 1 into the inlet of membrane 2 and so on?

I know it supposed to save water but it just taxes the 2nd and 3rd membrane leading to early membrane failure.

If you are replacing membranes I would take the opportunity to replace them with 150GPD ones.

I'm not spruce but yeah there is

Like spruce, i dont get why they run them in series, your just feeding the waste into the next membrane, making its life shorter

I had a 450, I split the hose after the pre-filters & booster into 3 (with 2 t-pieces) , feeding each individual membrane with water straight from the pre filters
Each membrane then gets the same TDS of inlet water, same water pressure etc...

The then t-piece all the pure together and the same with the waste (with your restrictor) giving all 3 membran es even wear

Running them in parallel just makes more sense to me...

To "remove the top" of the white membrane housings you may need to use rubber gloves to give you grip so you unscrew them easier. Or maybe even put the housing in a vice (protect it with some cardboard or something) and use both hands to unscrew the top.

if tou cant remove tops,    place in a door frame,  hinge side,
close door on membrane top to wedge in and twist round to loosen.        dont forget they have water in them

Yeah I have di changed filters and resin after about a year been ok till then since I changed it though tds already rising after a few months
Don't know whether it is resin or membranes as last time tds stayed at zero for a long time.

Whats your TDS out of the membranes?

As Don says - the way you identify if your membranes are working efficiently is to take a few tds readings.

You need to compare your tap water tds with the tds of your pure water out of the membrane but before the di vessel.

Ideally your rejection rate (pure water from membrane) should be between 97 and 99%. Water needs to run through the membrane for a few minutes to get a more accurate reading.

Example. Your tap water tds is 200ppm. If your membranes are working to spec then your pure water tds will be between 2 (99%) and 6 (97%) ppm.

If your reject water is at 10ppm then your membranes are only working at around 95% efficiency.  The less efficient your membranes are then the more resin you will use 'polishing' it off. I would personally change membranes at between 94 and 95%.

Chlorine eats membranes, so you need to replace your carbon block prefilter at least every 3 months.
