a friend of mine has bee giving me work for a couple of months now mainly one off cleans , where he does tenancy or regular domestic cleaning. only prob is he has given me some window cleaning on a monthly basis and now needs a cut of the job each month , also he said when cleaning a house if anyone asks for window cleaning i need to put it through his company , the problem is i think from his point of view fairenough ....but from my point .. i can never let my business grow by getting referals !!
and i will always be losing a bit of money + if a person drops him they drop me ?
what to do !

Shawn,
Continue with his work and at the same time get out and look for your own work! I understand the working for him stuff but not sure why any work you get has to go through him, unless your on a job of his cleaning?
Anyway, Like Steve says, canvass and get out there.

If he is the one paying you, then he should be the one doing the billing.
If he is doing this then he can add his percentage onto your bill.
This way he gets his cut.
If you are billing the customer direct then he is taking the 'p*ss' if expects a regular cut off the top.
So if he wants a cut, bill him what you think the job/s are worth, make sure he pays you straight away and let him have th hassle of collecting the money from the householder, how much he majes then depends on how much he wants to add onto the top of your price.
No way on earth does he deserve a cut of any regular window cleaning work that you are billing customers direct for.
Talk about money for nothing. >:(

Yeah have to jump in on this one - NOT MUCH OF A FRIEND - I'd tell him to forget it, if thats how he wants to work then kindly remind him by law you become an employee and therefore he must pay your PL and he also has to have Employers liability, on top of that he has to pay you 4 weeks hols a year. Think that'll sort out any probs!!

i provide all the guys that subcontract from me . with a van system poles and purewater , they tax insure and service van, they do 2 days a week for me for a day rate which is fixed between me and them , they are then free to use van for own work if houses come along i pass them onto the boys today i picked up three house all at 60 each gave them stright to the lads . we only do commercial i invoice all jobs, they have there gurantee satisfgaction forms signed after they do there schedule i encourage them to aim at 180-200 a day when on own.
i hope they stay with me i try and be fair and not ask to much on a day but they dont mind turning up doing job going to next ,
when they go holiday i do there work for them and still pay them there days rate.
loyalty brings loyalty.
if that where my friend it would not be for long .

sair I'd nearly want a job working for you!!
-
carry on working for him
BUT
any new jobs, take them yourself, get out and do a bit of doorknocking / posting flyers etc etc
build a round of you own
then when it suits you, ditch his work
