Title: Softwashing - K Rend Algae Clean & Algoclear Pro difference
Post by: Smurf on January 21, 2016, 01:26:17 pm
Just was wondering what's the difference between the two as I was not aware until today that K Rend sell there own product called Algae Clean http://www.k-rend.co.uk/products/complementary-products/algae-clean-krend ?

Has anyone tried them both?
If so which one works best?

Both Quats based products. The algo clear is more concentrated and in a pure form. Both products will work  at roughly the same rate…when its dead its' dead.

Thanks Chris, Have you used the K Rend brand yourself?

Which one out of all the ones you have tried would you say is the best you have used and why?

Algoclear…cos it's the cheapest. I think it is possibily the most resiliant to bad weather and bad application (contractor error).

Thanks Chris, I was thinking the same to be honest.

What's the best process for soft washing a roof.
Manually scrape the moss off then apply the chems.
Apply the chems then return and brush off the dead moss.

This is how the pros do it apparently...Still HSE would have a field day with some of those pics  ;D

This is near to how I would do it, although I would scrap using a trowel and small brush then apply the fungicidal wash. This takes me far more time to clean than simply pressure cleaning the whole roof.  When there are delicate gardens below that I cant cover with a tarp without damaging flowers etc I would also work this way. I need to cut down the time it takes me to softwash a roof as there are more people wanting it done this way.

So, out of interest, how long does it take to scrape a roof then apply algo clear ?

This both sides for example

As a guess I would probably say to remove all moss by hand and treat the roof would take 2-3 times longer than the methods you use.

Darren, too long if you ask me ! Instant result - pressure wash and spray then off onto next job  . This roof  was soiled like the chimney breast with the moss .

Yes that's my point, all that climbing over the roof, backbreaking work, when pressure washing it is so much faster and has better results

Indeed as those types of bungalow roof jobs would be a doddle to do safely from the ground with a telescopic spinner smudger.
I take it that is what you used?

No, moss was far to thick, nice modern roof tiles so worked off the roof

Chris, that must also be a killer on your knees working from a roof ladder and all for such a long time?

We just sit on the roof scrape and chat 5 hit…we have scraped bigger than that in a day. I would chrage around £ 700/800 for that roof…how much wages do you need in a day?

We never wash roofs at this time of year….asking for trouble.

In the summer we do https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JTd12Bgmso

Fair play Chris, I know that it would be 2 days to scrape the roof in my picture, thankfully were happy, and don't get any trouble from pressure washing all year round, we did the bungalow and double garage roof with soffit fascia clean and some bits and bobs in around 5 hours

Does that go for treating K-Rend walls with Algoclear pro too Chris?
Reason being in winter months  K-Rend seems to look it worst.

No … generally render will be ok due to the low pressure application.

"Usually"  the reason for moss on concrete tiled roof is that the substrate has become pourous. Given this… forceing water deeper into the tile by high pressure washing  and then freezing it can result in the tile cracking…water expands. Shaled clay tiles and damaged bricks on walls and buildings are prime examples of freeze /thaw.

That makes sense Chris.

Anyone use this method instead of pressure washing roofs?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTnAyoia8nw

I would love to be a fly on the wall if Chris should ever meet Mr Softwash UK at Mark M's show  ;D

I think hypo has its uses as is a fast acting but is defo not ideal to go spraying it about on the likes of K-rend walls etc when safer alternatives are available.

Hoping to offer soft washing as a add on... it's such a mine field. Depending on who you talk everyone seems to have a varying opinion. Some swear by hypo, though overspray can be a issue and others swear by formulated mixtures such as Benz, algo clr. I am completely lost...

Good point, luckily we've haven't had anything below +2 here day or night this year but I'll bear the overnight freezing into account

I work by myself so this is based on one man.
Scraping a 4 bed detached house would take a full day including spraying plus return to brush off the dead. Priced at around £450-550
The way I see it is there's no wear on the machine so I would charge the same either way. On quicker jobs I tend to be there the next day just to brush up any mess and recheck the work.

Hi peeps, going to clean a friends exterior wall, with my new softwash set up. Should I use algoclear? Or something else. New to softwashing so using friends and family as guinea pigs.
Thanks.

Is that wall what I can fake brick cladding that is stuck on the wall that was mostly popular with right to buy council houses back in the 80's?  If so myself I would be vary cautious as I would not want any of them falling off when brushing over them.

Algoclear pro is not very good at removing black stains apparently but still you could try it and see how it turns out I guess.

Yes it's that fake brick cladding... the mortar inbetween the bricks is in good condition, that was my biggest concern and also the fact that algoclear won't remove the black spots (HYPO?) But overspray may be a issue....

Like I said try Algroclear pro and see if it works well enough.
May take a while like a few months to see the results though.
Oh and they say don't apply it if it's forcast rain in the next 24 hours
