Hello all,
With the weatherman predicting double negative degrees at night, I was wondering how you guys protect your systems in the vans? Mine is out on the driveway. I park close to my house for that extra couple of degrees when it's going to be fresh, and I haven't had any problems yet. However, with freezing weather predicted, I wondered if it would be worth running a heat mat around exposed bits. I guess the main issue isn't the water tank freezing up, but the pipes/filters freezing - expanding - breaking.
So just wondering what you lot do?
-
My truck is in the garage , But seen as you park on your own drive extension cable out to van with a small oil filled rad with thermostat once temp drops it will kick in and van will be nice and warm and set up protected .
-
For prolonged sub zero temps when you can't work at all I would bring any vulnerable kit into the warm.
One year I was off for weeks due to bad weather the van tank and static holding tanks in my garden turned into icebergs ;D
-
Oil filled radiator set just above the frost protect setting - they keep everything safe and don't cost an arm and a leg to run

Oil fires rads.
Tube heaters.
Drain stuff down which doesn't cause massive air lock problems next day.
Lag pipes.
Blankets.
Set fire to the van.

Thats when you remember to plug them in smudger... ;D
One time I forgot and trashed a hot water heater in the van. Oops!

The last one sounds interesting if you want a new van out of it. ;D

Thankfully I never forgot, don't have to worry now all the vans are parked in the unit ;D
The best way is an immersion in the water tank, frost free van and hot water 👍

Hi I had a eberspacher night heater installed, bit expensive but its like having central heating in a van
-
I have an immersion heater.
Goes on at 9pm, off at 6am, and keeps the bank of my van warm, while also giving me warm water to work with all day. Costs me about £2.50 overnight.
Before that I'd put an oil filled radiator in the back.
-
yep oil filled radiator in van tonight for the first time this winter, drained gas heater too just to be on the safe side.
if it goes down to -10 or -15 on sat night then my tank could still freeze even with radiator in the back so ill be putting a duvet over the top of the tank too.
i also have some ice melt grit and a sweeping brush in the van for when im out and about working for customers paths.i will grit an elderly customers driveway for a cup of coffee free of charge. :)

-10 -15 ::)roll...My weather says -3

Nah double figures frosts are predicted for the weekend :) (some areas, not everywhere)

I do this except I find that 6 hours of heat (3kw) is enough for water in the low 20 degrees range and supple hoses in 400 litres of water.

says double minus figures for sat night here in the north west! ::)roll
i remember back in 2010 it went down to -15 and all my 10 barrels in my old van froze solid!(no heater in the back!) ;D

I remember in 2010 too it was a nightmare.
BBC weather must be well out with their predictions then ;D

I am only repeating what BBC weather said.
whether it's correct I don't know.

I'm only looking on the 5 day forecast on my mobile phone app so that might not be accurate as I've noticed what they say on TV compared to the app.is usually way off ;D

Tv said severe frosts at weekend, all over uk. ???
-
immersion heater, keeps entire van and system frost free all night and all day plus warm water to work with, supple hoses etc.

Hi Chris & welcome to the forum.
I like the sound of that but just wondering does it have a frost protect setting?
-
On the subject about heaters I see xline now do a combo type heater install which heats the water also frost protects the van with the built in blower function.
-
HI it has timer control pad you can set it to run for up to 8 hours daily in cold weather . by diesel in the vans tank and takes power from aux battery, chris
-
not sure it needs frost protection setting
-
not sure it needs frost protection setting
So how does it work?
-
you set it to come on like central heating in your house,it blows warm air through the van for as long as you want it to .it runs on diesel from the vans fuel tank
-
i want an eberspacher for my vw transporter. you have remote control for them. top bits of kit but not cheap.
-
not cheap, but cheaper than a new system

I use a 2kw immersion, so probably similar.
In 9 hours my tank gets to about 35-40 degrees.

frost got me this morning big time.
battery went flat, luckilly a 3 year waranty on it, lasted 14 months. ?? got it changed over , waited 1 hour for new battery to arrive. ::)roll :'(
pole hose all frozen, in house around radiator,
reel frozen inner water, changed reel. luckilly have 2.
headed out then realised i never filled tank up , back home to refill van.
hoping to get out around 10am, nothing till 1.30pm. need to get out tomorrow now.
Citroen Dispatch changed battery and it seems to have messed up vehicles computer system, telling me to stop fault, hopefully no faults.

Try disconnecting the battery again, might clear the fault display.

Nicely written article there Ian. The V11 controller sounds interesting as was not aware it was suitable for gas water heaters too ;)
-
We added a function that allows the water recirculation rate when in frost mode to be adjusted to take into account gas heaters.
Diesel are not dependent on the amount of flow to initiate heating. A gas heater is dependent on the flow across the heater to initiate the burner
In all cases sufficient ventilation of waste gases must be taken into account. All the WFP distributors usually have stock of the Frost protect controllers.

What imersion heater are you using for what size tank? Where did you get it from as well??
I have a 500litres tank, was wondering about immersion heaters
