Title: Winter
Post by: coyote7 on November 11, 2015, 05:22:53 pm
Evening all.
Due to moving home and having no indoor space to store my kit in the cold winter months I will need to leave everything in the garage.
I have read things in the past about people using oil filled radiators to keep the frost away.
My local Aldi are currently selling a large 2500kw radiator  that switches on/off depending on temperature would this be good or do I need something else.
Any advice will be gratefully received.
Thanks,
Rich.

buy a couple of high tog duvets and cover up oil rad will be good as well, get some insulation place in
roof voids and walls it will hold heat better

I think hot air heaters are best as the create a movement of warm air around the van, oil radiators create localised heat which will rise. Anything on the van floor can still freeze unless you have the radiator on full.

I point a hot air heater blowing  under the machine so it blows across the van floor

I have a 500 w black heater and it has been great. I just leave it on all night and forget it. I tried blow heaters and oil rads and the black heater was better. That's in the van though. I would have thought in a garage as long as it is well insulated a oil rad left on all night would work well. In a lock up which is away from my house with no electric or insulation I have used a paraffin green house heater, it worked really well but covered everything in a layer of smudge.

Insulate your van
Can you put van in garage??
During the day you kit can freeze in the van unless you insulate it.

Thanks for all the advice chaps.
I do also have a 2500kw air heater Mike so that will save me £40 on the oil filled radiator and hopefully keep my machine frost free at night ;D

Hi Lewis,
In regards to insulation in my van well it is ply lined throughout and I do use a nice big off cut of carpet but that is all what else would you suggest?

Sorry I meant to ask the guys who have insulated thier van.  I have no idea!

I remember a thread on a valeting forum some years back where a guy put some insulation in before the ply lining and said it made a great difference,  can't remember what he used tho

celotex insulation board the thicker the better make it a snug fit with min joints that will keep
van at its best form of defence against the cold
