i priced up a walk up yesterday.large victorian house with a few large 3 storey windows.after a busy day i was just wanting to get home.got there after work and he was out so walked round and priced it up at £40 (8 weekly)and rang him straight after.he accepted.this morning im thinking i cant be bothered at this price its too low.
im gonna phone him this morning and tell him i want £80 first clean and £60 thereafter(8 weekly).
what would you do? ;D
-
Half hours work?
Just do the fronts.
-
Just explain you made a mistake with quote, and apologise and state you will not be offended if they don't want to procceed.
-
I would stick to my price.
Next time I would make sure I charged more for the first clean.
Your big mistake isn't the £40 thereafter, it's the first clean price. You have left yourself open to them cancelling after the first clean with no consequence of having paid more.
-
Or just do the first clean for the quoted price, take a hit, but inform them it will be more next time ;D
-
Or just tell them if you pay peanuts you get monkeys :P
-
ive just texted him this
hi **** after thinking about it overnight.ive underpriced your house!i want £80 for the first clean to get them up to scratch and £60 on regular visits(8 weekly).i can fit you in this saturday morning (15/08/15)at 10 am.kind regards.Darren.
im not bothered whether i get the job or not really lads.
-
SATURDAY :o are you mad? Double time on weekends.

i want £60 thereafter not £40 mate after having a think.its going to take an hour to clean i reckon on regular cleans plus 5 mins of driving there and back plus ill need to use my 47 footer to reach four 3 storey windows.first clean £80(i reckon 2 hours)
-
You should have told him there would be a 75% surcharge if they want em done saturday ;D
-
SATURDAY :o are you mad? Double time on weekends.
ive not worked a single saturday this year dave but im just too busy esp with having a week off decorating my flat plus im off to southport next wed for a day out with girlfriend and her family. :)
-
Must be a massive flat or a tiny paintbrush ???
-
small flat.2inch paint brush dave! ;D
.....and only the living room!
my girlfriend is coming round to finish off the wallpapering today while im at work and fit new blinds and pelmets(6 altogether including landing windows and bedroom) ;D
-

I would second Samson's suggestion. I haven't always succeeded in keeping the work but more often than not they have been ok with it as they suspected it was a low quote anyway.
-
I think I would stick with my original quotation. After two or three cleans, you should be going around it a lot faster. If you then find that it's not viable, discuss it. That way, you may lose the job but you won't gain a bad reputation. Usually, reputation trumps swallowing on one job. I suppose £40 for an hour plus a 10 minute round trip isn't so bad if it's only done three times. Personally, I think that £40 an hour is OK, but maybe I haven't kept up.
-
You been in this game long enough Dazmond not to make such a rookie mistake ;D
seriously though, I've never felt comfortable upping a quoted and agreed price. I feel my integrity is then questioned.
I suppose its up to how you feel about it being your own boss and if as you say you are not bothered whether you get it or not.
As samson has said, apologise and keep it polite as I'm sure you will.

Happened to me the other month, I quoted a job at the end of a day and was tired, said yeah it's X amount , did the first clean and thought this is gonna take a lot longer than normal , did the second clean and thought I cant b arsed for this much so said to the nice lady, I'm really sorry but iv underpriced your job, to my surprise she said- I told my husband you were doing it too cheap, how much will it be now? I said X amount , she said it's absolutely fine - happy days :-)
(To fill in the blanks I quoted £8, should have been £9 :-) )
-
suck it up Daz if you had over quated you wouldnt be reducing it,your word should be your bond
-
I usually overprice by a mile these days - gets embarrassing.
it's almost as cringeworthy as pretending your hourly rate is £60 an hour and you won't work for less Dazmond. It's good to brag don't you think? ;D ::)roll
-
Daz, do you do your Saturday work in the sports car with a few barrells in?
-
Barrels? His wench sits in the sports car and ogles all the fitties ;)
-
Why not get somebody in to do your painting/decorating Daz? It's a false economy having to take time off work to do it yourself when you can pay a professional to do it for about 30-40% of your own daily takings.
I know plenty of local decorators that are more than happy with £120/day.
-
I reckon 2 hrs to do a good job first clean and 90 min on regular cleans.its a massive house.im not happy getting £40 for 90 min time on a large house like this.he 's not replied anyway.
Yes I messed up!but guess what?I got a call from a guy from next door to this guy today to clean inside and out! (New church minsters house).I'm gonna go and price it up tomorrow. (£120 methinks)an hour outside and 2 hrs inside.one off. ;D
Coincidence or divine intervention?his names Mike angel as well! (No joke!) :)
-
::)roll Oh Lord!
-
I know a couple of meth heads that will do it for a tenner each ;D

Would it make you feel any better, Daz, to know that I priced a job this week.
Underpriced by about 25%.
Then...
broke a window ::)roll
£60 job. £120 window.
Brilliant.
4th window in 13 years.
-
If you don't really want the job then just text to confirm the price quoted was 400 (not 40 ) for a first exterior window clean.
That should do the trick methinks. ;D

was you using hot water mate? :(
ive only ever broke a 200 year old paper thin window on an old cottage years ago when trad.the custy said "its about time that window was replaced!"and insisted he paid me and he fixed it himself at no charge to myself.i cut my hand and nearly severed an artery in my wrist! :o
im a lucky guy.
just goes to show even when we ve been in this game for years we still make the odd mistake.oh well onward and upward. :)

No, mate.
Just caught the glass wrong with the stock of the brush.
Cleaning the channel for the sliding sash.
It was 2mm 100year old+
My fault. Just not paying enough attention.
-
Dazmond, why would you do a one off clean for 3 hours @ £40 an hour when you're regular work is making that amount.
Not having a pop, just think you should price one offs at double your regular hourly rate.

i fancied a change from window cleaning danny.i dont mind a bit of painting plus i wanted to clear a few things out of my flat and have a general tidy up.its great having an interior designer as a girlfriend though!shes done ALL the wallpapering and fitted new blinds while i was out working today! :D
-
So you don't want a £40 an hour regular job yet you've picked up next door inside and out for ................. £40 an hour ???
You started drinking again Dazmond?

i dont want anymore work at all dave really! ;D
my mistake was i should of quoted double price for first clean and told him from the off as i reckon 2 hours to get them up to scratch.
why is it we get enquiries for new jobs when we re already crammed full with overdue jobs?very rarely get even one new enquiry when im having a slack week! ::)roll
