Title: TDS readings

Hi Everyone
I've got a TDS reading of 60 straight out of tap I live in Cornwall  which is a soft water area
Do you think I  need a RO pole system or could I get away with a  DI system

A DI system would be no problem to use with a reading of 60. However, ultimately you would use more resin which in turn equals more running costs than if you had a RO system.

The calculation that you need to make is: cost and quantity of resin over the cost of pre-filters and ro membrane changes with an RO system.

According to the resin calculator, if you used 5000 litres of water a month (part time window cleaner), you would change your resin every  4 weeks  on an input of 60ppm. This is obviously just a guide  and could last longer/less.

A bag of resin costs £62.50 + vat so this will last you 2 and 1/2 fillups (so every 2 months you will need to buy more resin) so £350 - 400 a year.

A RO system will need prefilter changes every 6 months at £34.79 + vat (£69.58 per year) and  RO membranes. IF looked after and the RO membranes have the correct pressure / flow , along with the water quality having nothing nasty within it, 60 ppm would suggest the RO membranes could last 3 - 5 years (we have some customers that are fortunate enough to have the RO last 7 years and counting!). The Resin calculator then suggests a change every 25 weeks based on a  TDS output of 5ppm.

So taking an average and WORST case scenario, an RO system would cost you £200 - £240 a year.

The decision will also depend if you are on a water meter or not and if you have a place to store water whilst processing it with an r/o

Tds at 60 a ro will last years and the running costs will be lower than using di only for sure.
Downside is a ro produces waste and it's not as quick or convenient as with di only as you can fill up the van tank with tap water anywhere. Also with di tanks after the pump in the van can purify water on demand if you wanted too.
Mind if you go into a hard water area you will be screwed resin cost wise as ppm tap water varies quite considerably even in a small radius of where you intend to work.
