in the event of some unexpected downtime what tasks do you have your staff doing just trying to brainstorm and gets some ideas as im sick of my staff not be proactive so writing up a list of tasks they can do if we have an unexpected delay to work like this morning had printer issues

Leaflet delivery
Clean van
Door knocking
Equipment checks

I would say the biggest cause of downtime would be bad weather, the guys who I know that employ have it contracted
so that the employees have to make this time up either by working weekends or staying on a few hours in the evenings.
I am talking about bad weather guys not the odd bit of rain or showers.

never missed a day so far due to bad weather,
if you have problems with printer write down the list of jobs and prices etc on a piece of paper using a pen
if you need invoices printing do the jobs then take invoices back later,
if you have no windows cleaned today slips then write it on the back of a business card,
-
Keep them busy and they will be happy if not they will fight ass about steal and cause poo.

A bullwhip soon sorts out the wheat from the chaff. ;D

The printer issue wAs unexpected my sister used it to print her assignment for her masters left me no ink had to go asda at 8am then it wouldn't work after aligning the cartridge done my head in but it's constant issue now need to put my foot down
-
Why should your staff be proactive? It's up to you to come up with ideas to keep them busy. Just saying.

give them a pencil each, get them to write their jobs out and send them to work ???
-
Unbelievable! How can you expect much from your staff when you leave it to the last minute to print out the day's work for staff. As DW said, why not write a few out to get them on their way. And you ran out because your sister used all the ink. ::)roll

if they need telling things like this then prob not worth employing ... a good lad would have found something to do with u telling him .... u will waste more time cajoling shirkers into doing something he don't want to do

I'm guessing from what you've written that you use inkjet (you call it ink rather than toner).
If so, I suggest investing in a single colour laser printer and always have some spare toner (get a spare as soon as you load the last one). It lasts an eternity compared to those poxy little inkjet cartridges. Yes, you have to pay more for toner carteidges but at least you're not forever changing them or wasting loads on head cleans.
