Title: problem merlin system
Post by: water fed bill on April 23, 2015, 01:22:30 pm
Hi, I am running a  20 inch Merlin RO unit and up until the last year or so its been great but now its eating resin I am using a 5ltr resin unit and having to change the resin about once a week before it lasted about 4/5 months,
I have replaced the prefilter and the membranes, tried different brands of resin checked all the O rings and still not solved the problem, also put a big booster pump on to up the pressure to about 60psi
any suggestions much appreciated.
thanks

Sounds like a problem with the resin vessel itself.  I would replace everything in the vessel except the main canister.

5ltr resin bottle not big enough, and i would double di it.

Have you substantially increased production lately ??

If you've put in new membranes I would have expected a better performance than that

I used to use 2x 11 litre resin vessel on mine.. Best readings I used to get were 18tds.
Either buy bigger resin bottle or 100psi booster pump to lower your output tds.

Check tds before merlin and if it's coming out at about 20, this is about right depending on tap pressure. So problem must lay with Di vessel.
I connected up to a tap the other day and the good water came out at 103 (one hundred and three ) I disconnected rite away I then tried a tap that I use regular and it was normal, so it can be hit and miss if ur not setting up the right pressure, connections, or have any leaks.
I am happy with 20 tds or less from the merlin at a decent trickle and I use about 700-1000L a week and my resin lasts forever.
I have recently been using my tank for pressure washing  a lot so have had to rinse tank through with pure going through hose and back into tank, using pole hose end, I recon it was about October when I last changed my resin and I use an 11L Di bottle in van.
My tds shows 002 today as am cleaning tank and changing resin.

I don't know much about wot could go wrong with a Di bottle other than the top screw in part or a cracked bottle.

I had similar issue when I used a merlin system at the start.  My TDS coming out of Merlin was always high when starting it up but then settled down to normal after about 5 min.

Have you tested TDS right at the start of filling before it goes to DI ?  and then tested it again 10 mins later?

I always disconnected the Merlin from the DI for the first 5 mins to flush it out then connected again when settled saving resin.

I also do as said above let merlin run for 5 mins take regular samples to test until down to acceptable numbers
