Hi, it's been a while since I posted, been a rough few months health wise but anyway......I could do with a bit of advice!
Today I went round to explain to my customers why I've not been around lately and it turns out the guy that I bought the round off has been around, knocking and taking his old customers back. I've not been there for a few months due to health reasons but surely this is bang out of order?
When I bought the round we signed a contract, would this be worth the paper it's written on or not? I'm not sure. So I'm not sure what to do next?!

Just playing devils advocate...
When did you buy the round? How long since you cleaned?
As if it's been a while since you cleaned your customers may have thought that you quit & called him up to clean? And he may then of assumed you had quit too if you don't see anything of each other.
On the other hand he may just be trying his luck? Try to find out from your lost customers who approached who.
Hope you sort it.
-
Also phone the guy up & tell him you have been ill & haven't quit. It may well be a misunderstanding, or if not it may at least stop him poaching anymore.
-
Cheers, it's been about 3 months! Bought it back last April.
It sounded like he's been round the whole of his old round knocking.
-
i would never do that.i sold a round a fair few years ago now and the guy who bought it off me couldnt hack it after a few months and i had my old customers asking me back but i wouldnt.once sold i move on.
hope you are fighting fit now mate but 3 months is a long time to not clean the windows? :(
-
contact him, he may have been aproached by old customers telling him that you had packed in, its a long time to take off without letting customers know your reason.
let him know you are ok now, and back on the round. he should say no problem.
-
Is there a restriction in the contract stopping him from taking the old customers back on?

He is out of order , But did you go round posting a note informing custys of your ill health i broke my back about 12yrs ago as soon as i was out of hospital my wife and i drove round and she posted a note through every custys door letting them know what had happened and my expected return date , Never lost a single custy .
If you left custys in the dark then i assume he has been asked back thinking you have disappeared without a care .

I could have my wires crossed, but I'm sure this guy posted on here recently asking what he should do as he'd been getting calls from his old customer because the new guy had just stopped cleaning!

Omg......... That's a little bit naughty that mate, I would be pist........ To say the least.......
Different thing if it's just someone else but he's the one who sold u it. Omg I be pist.
Go knock on his front door and sort it out either he buys the work back or he pays u so much money off wot he's had.

I would be having my customers back.
I am upset for u mate but u have to be a man and go see him.

And on that bombshell .............
Yes mate there was a guy on here saying he had tried to get in touch with the buyer but had no luck wot so ever, and custard kept ringing him, and my advise was to go do them until further notice, however there was also talk of him wanting to share his profits with the guy, and if this is the guy then there is a total misunderstanding.
Unless someone is telling porkies.

Maybe wrong but it was poleking i think, up in the midlands...
Might be wrong but Cornwall is no where near lincs'...

To be honest you sound a bit clueless to me. I may be wrong of course, i'm just saying the way its coming across to me. You havn;t been round for three months, and you say he's going round knocking your customers ? Pound to a pinch of crap says they've rung him up, and he's found out you havn;t been for a few months and he's seeing who else has been left without a window cleaner. Of course, he could of rung you up, but then you could of rung your customers up and let them know..Unless of course you expect customers to wait for months with no window cleaner ? Either way i hope he's bigger than you and learns you a lesson not to treat your customers the way you have. And i'd guess by effectivley not servicing a customer for three months that you could fairly assume that you've give them up. He sold you monthly work ? At what point are they to assume you've left never to be heard of again...........2 months,6 months, a year ? Get your own act together.

In hindsight yes I should of let them know one way or another, bit harsh with your reply there considering you don't know me and my situation but the fact that he's not contacted me to even see what's going on stinks and he's blatantly ignoring my phone calls.
I'm going to head on round to ALL of the customers to explain and hope I've not lost too many, lesson learnt I guess.

A little harsh, perhaps, but I agree with CleanClear. Surely common sense would dictate that customers need to know if you are going to be missing several visits - their first assumption will be that you are like all the rest: "We used to have one but he just stopped coming and never let us know" - I'd like a pound for every time I've heard that!!
Regardless of your situation, your first priority should have been to inform your customers. This has happened to me a couple of times, and each time I ensured the customers were fully informed as to why I wouldn't be around for a while - I didn't lose any on either occasion.
When I'm canvassing people sometimes say "We've got one but he hasn't been round for at least 2/3/4 months." I feel quite justified in saying "I guess he's not coming back then, would you like a quote?" If he subsequently turned up and just started doing them again I would be the one complaining!!

+1.
A few years ago I sold some work to another window cleaner. I doubted his commitment to the work but he paid the asking price. A few months later I was getting calls from some of the old customers, eventually I took a few of them back on. Why not? He wasn't cleaning them, they wanted a cleaner. He obviously wasn't such a good business man. Simple really. I don't see the issue.

Id go round his house and have a word with him and tell when he puts things right you'll bring his head up from the toilet lol
-
Shouldve let your custies know.
:P
-
This is a difficult one.
I think you know that you should have informed your custies of your situation. Naturally they will phone up someone else.
If they are phoning the other guy then it is fair to assume he will think you have given up, or not doing a proper job etc. Of course he's going to take them back.
Get round to all your custies and let them know your situation.
If you think the other guy has acted badly then text him your situation. (At least you know he's read it).
Good luck.

Dingbat :P I almost never worked again but my first thoughts were my customers and business .
3 months and it never crossed your mind to tell your custys , I thought your posts in the past were bad but this one is the best yet ;D :P

Canvass your own work. Why buy it?
-
No sympathy, quarter of the year gone have not let your customers know...poor management
of what is supposed to be your living , cant see how you can complain.
My advice....get canvassing or leafleting
