Spit contains digestive enzymes so if its Wool it will have been partly digested. Its likely it would also permanently damage manmade fibres.

rotate his chair on a fortnightly bases until carpet is uniformly spit marked. Sorted ;D
seriously though that carpet looks like its from the 70's so i think you're probably lucky the carpet didnt fall apart when you cleaned it. What a dreadful habit to spit indoors. yak.
Hope you had a waste license to carry it all away ;D

Derek have you not come across this carpet? It's quite a modern design...... I clean it about 3-4 times a year
The old guy has passed away now I was cleaning it for his wife.
This was a job I did today, I Posted the picture while drinking my coffee in the van. In the end I sprayed it with Prochems coffee stain remover and carried on cleaning the rest of the house.
The final result was quite acceptable

Thought it was one of those greeny brown ones you got from the seventies or eighties, think they were wool woven, and stunk of rot round the windows and outer doors from the damp in the hessian part of the backing .
jobs a good en from here.
