Im at the position now where i can start to employ and grow. I have window rounds, but really target add ons.
I am working 6 days a week, windows til about 2pm, then onto a connie or g/s/f or UPVC clean.
last Xmas i came of anti depressants and don't think this has anything to do with the way i feel at the moment.
Financially, i am very solvent due to working bloody hard.
For the last few weeks, every day really is a chore. A couple of weeks ago, i had a day off in the week. I have never done this.
I am near on ready, to kit out another van, employ canvassers and cleaners and start the ball rolling.
BUT............Just fed up!!!
So, anyone else get like this? Really need a kick up the backside, as the expansion really is a non fail operation so really, should be bouncing off the walls ready to go!
-
I think you expecting too much from yourself .... that's a big workload .... taking the odd day off helps to keep you going and makes you stronger for the weeks ahead.
I give myself a little lee way sometimes like now ... done a hard last 10 days early starts / late finishes then canvassing on a Saturday so having a 10am start will prob finish at 3pm instead of 4pm ... little things like this keep me going long term
-
oh and stop your google Adwords in my area ............ that will reduce your workload ;) ;) ;D
-
we all get like that at times mick although hardly ever for me these days as i dont work as hard as you.
my workload and days are more measured.
mon-fri (usually working 5-7 hours "on the glass" a day)
a few days off(sometimes a week)at the end of every month.
this prevents me from "burn out" and getting totally fed up with my business/workload.
i earn very well for a sole trader.certainly enough for me.i could earn more but at what price to my health/sanity?i also have other interests(playing drums in a band),chilling out with the missus and taking the dog on long walks in the countryside!
im off on holiday soon.ive booked a 5 star clifftop hotel in the algarve with health spa etc for a week so me and the missus can relax(she also runs her own business and runs around like a headless chicken most of the time).
im 43 mick(im sure your older?)and i couldnt work 6 days a week with add on jobs every day without ending up very tired and fed up after a few months.
to me its just not worth earning the extra money than i already get and giving up more of my precious time to work.
dont get me wrong i work hard but i seem to be more productive when i work at a steady pace 5 days a week doing 5-7 hours a day.
-
we have band rehearsal on a wed night(4 hrs of drumming!) so im a bit tired today after 3 good days work(mon, tue, wed)but on a day like today(a bit windy and damp)ill still clean for 5 hours min "on the glass" time even if its 1030am-330pm(which it will be today).
no matter how im feeling i can clean for 5 hours a day.its easy so keeps me on schedule.
im lucky as ive built a very good round of regular customers all year round which pulls in a very good wedge with a few add ons in the spring/summer months.add ons can be a killer though if you have a lot of them booked in around your normal schedule.even with the lightest poles its easier to strain yourself with aching neck and shoulders.
better get off to work now!
have a good day mick!
best wishes
dazmond

So what your really saying is you cant be bothered to expand but feel because your in the position to do so
you must be fed up.
Could it be that deep down your happy where you are now and don't really feel the need to go any further.
I'm sort of in the same boat as yourself, I keep saying to myself that I don't need or want any more work but cant turn it down
even though I am fortunate enough not to need the work or the extra cash.
I have now got to the stage where I just cant keep up and have given up trying, need to sort this out quickly as I am turning
a job that I enjoy into a job that I'm starting to hate more and more.
I think you need to decide if expansion is something you really want and if not maybe think of lightening your workload
slightly.
-
Its all about striking the right balance and have time off , I dropped today because it was cold and horrible only got 4-5 hrs tomorrow so no big deal . Sun is now shinning but i am off out with the dog for an hour shortly .
You gotta love the money when your busy , But do want the stress of putting another van on the road you could continue to work flat out make loads of wad and retire a bit sooner .
But whats the point i would rather retire later and work happy , If i live that long who knows so therefore i enjoy life and been happy with my wife , although the dog generally takes priority
-
I find that having something to look forward to always helps to keep me motivated. Just had a long weekend in London (in a 5 star hotel with the mrs ;D) which really helped me to recharge and keep focused on the workload when I returned.
I'll be booking a 2 week beach holiday for the family for August which will be something to look forward to.
Also set short term and long term financial goals to keep your mind focused. I set a target every year to overpay on my mortgage by X amount per year and find it rewarding when I hit those goals.
Mainly though mick I'd consider slowing down a bit. If you are really doing a full gag/conservatory clean every day after 5-6 hours on the glass then I'd say you are heading for burnout.
-
Yep , I worked myself into trouble . Was sat in van once crying . But had no real problems apart from too much work etc .
Now I've binned every single problem customer , even if it was a £5 to £50 house .
This de-stressed me and gave me my mo-Jo back that I'm in charge of my work and not jumped up moaning custys .
Plus my son does loads of activities . And this is what makes me look forward to .
Work hard guys , but enjoy yourself more .
If you earn £15k a year or £100k a year , it's all about balance and enjoyment .
DONT LIVE TO WORK

Who made your website M&M? Looks really good!

Yep, fed up with it at the moment! Got all the work I want, new jobs too if I needed them, just can't be arsed to return the messages. It's boring monotonous work after all with nill job satisfaction. I've come home early with a bad case of hose taurettes - got to the stage that if I snagged my crappy, twisty loopy all season (my arse) hose one more time I'd probably resort to physical violence!
Knocked work on the head and will most likely go for a bike ride.
The older I get the less I want to do :) Which is how it should be in my opinion.
-
I find that having a hobby or three helps prevent burnout - - if your working all the time and only ever think about work all the time then you're going to get depressed about it no matter how much you're earning,... but if you've something to look forward to at the end of the day thats completely unrelated to work & that you genuinely enjoy, then it helps break up the monotony & de-stress.
You need to make time for you - and its not always easy to do,.. but it is important.
-
That's one of mine. ;)

Wise words
Seek a hobby

Make time for yourself .

I'm kind of the opposite at the minute. I am only a wipper snapper though at the brand old age of 27. :)
I'm enjoying building the business, and working hard, and a big plus is that now the wife has cut down on her work hours to part time, so she's happy too. I'm working on the glass from 8:30 till about 5 ish (Monday-Friday),
Then I do commercial or early starts from 6:00am Saturday till 8:30am, then start again on Saturday afternoon with one or two extras like fsg or Conny cleans for a few hours.
I can feel when I need a rest or a break though and I will take a day off and just chill. Only happens every few months or so.
I've definitely found that you have to ditch any work you don't enjoy, or keep increasing the price untill your happy to do it.
Window cleaning is simple, and I'm simple so that's probably why I'm happy. ;D

Thanks for all the replies!!!
I think I'm a victim of my own success really. Been going 10 years now and always promised myself to take people on, but hate the fact that someone can undo all the hard work put in to build a good name by doing a crap job!
I have been back from being on the glass (no add ons today, need to catch up with paperwork) and within an hour have taken on £755 of new add on business.
I have over quoted all these jobs (3 jobs in total) however got them all.
I have a holiday booked in June for Thailand for 2 1/2 weeks. I have provisionally cancelled it because just too busy, but i think i need to make myself go and forget about the money i will lose if i do!!
-
The business has taken control of you & you need to take it back. Work to live, not the other way round. Get rid or sell/pass on less lucrative work & keep just the cream. Work less for maximum profit & start to live again. I always remember this quote, it's very true- "there is only one success, to be able to live your life in your own way". You decide. ;)
-
i feel like giving up at least 3 times a week lol
but then i think if i do i would ust end up working in a factory earning £300 a week instead of £200 + a day ( when i can be bothered to do that much ) usually average £150 to £180 .
-
id go on the holiday mick if i were you!itll do you the world of good and just shift your entire schedule forward 2 and a half weeks.sod the money!by the sounds of it your doing very well anyway so go and enjoy all your hard earned money!
i tend to go away for a week at a time abroad(or 10 days) a couple of times a year and a few long weekends.doing this doesnt get me falling too far behind with my work.
-
Being the owner of a business puts us in a very fortunate position but i think sometimes we can have too much control.
I am very aware that i can work as much as i want, finish early whenever i want etc and sometimes this can create problems.
Most humans are bad at standing still, we always want improvements or new things etc.
Its a very hard skill to master but its very important to try to be happy where you are now, enjoy the journey not the destination etc cos we never actually get there anyway!
Im in a similar position where I've too much work and i need to get another employee. But not sure whether I actually want to.
Its a very boring prospect to think that the business will simply stay where it is now until i retire in 30 years time. But to counter that, I have a money target which I work to every week and i complete every week. Its enough money to do everything i need.
SO which side wins, the content side, or the dissatisfied side. As i said, its a n extremely fortunate position to be in, we must stress that, but its also a tussle in our heads that i don't think will ever stop until we retire or die.
-
Mick take the holiday.
I went to Thailand in January and it was absolutely brilliant. 100% chill out holiday. Fantastic location and hotel.
I can give you the details if you want.
As well as having a relaxing time, it will give you 'quality time' to think about the future too.
Go on, you know it makes sense ;D
-
Mick, go ride that motorbike somewhere warm for a week. I had a week riding round Andalucia a few years back - brilliant!
No point being the richest guy in the cemetery.
-
I went to Thailand for the new year, totally loved it, thats why i booked straight away for June. To coin a phrase i "found the old me" again.
I get out on the bike every Sunday, thats my escape. Was in the lakes last Sunday.
Ive been reconsidering Thailand in June since today, so will see what happens.
-
Mick
Remember we got together just after you started up.
I think i've got some time off next week. If you want a coffee & a chat i'll drive over?
Rob

Me personally i get fed up when i stagnate and flat line, i can imagine earning say 150 quid a day year in year out on the glass would get very boring, thats why (even though im just starting out and buidling atm) i plan on doing way more than just windows.
I plan on building a window round to give me the regular base income to go to the next level, that for me is expanding, either sticking with windows or more likely into other areas such as carpets, valeting, pressure washing or maybe into something diff like landscaping, fencing. Eventually i would like to get into property or god knows what. I want to grow as a person and as business all my life, expanding doesnt nessarcarily mean working harder, i wont work weekends but maybe my staff will?
i dont know where my venture will take me but its certainly not as boring as working in a warehouse for minimum wage like i have done for last 15yr!
-
Yes mate, very much so. I work everyday, life becomes a total strain working 100 hour weeks sometimes.
When I started out I got busy very quick and always said while the work is there I will do it, a long time has past and I still keep telling myself, just crack on mate it won't be like this forever......................... I keep going and am starting to think it may last forever, or work will come and go but you will always be busy doing something.
I have had a few vans on the road to maintain this, but found staff are wa???rs. I now just run the 1 main van (3 seater) and have a second that is there when needed, work becomes monotonous, weeks, months and years fly by, but I have a vision.
I hope to call it a day in next 8-10 years, I no it's still a long way off but it will be here in no time.
Not retire but have a change of climate, country, career, I just don't know where atm. I only 38 so time is on my side, just hope my health keeps up.
Best of luck mate.

will do mate, but deffo meet up soon :)

I agree with shifting work. I had an op do couldn't work for six weeks and was getting stressed at being late and behind so I bumped all my work forward eight weeks so all my customers missed a clean. I felt so much better. I have caught up now and all customers were fine I only lost one but they will probably come back.

wow!matty!!100 hours a week!how do you do that without being totally burned out and REALLY fed up with work?
ive got 5 jobs booked in today.a church,a few bigger posh houses and a conny roof clean 9am-330pm i reckon(so 6 hours "on the glass"30 mins for lunch)£250.im happy with that.so ive done about 29 hours this week altogether mon-fri.then a bit of admin/end of day jobs and an hour collecting on monday evening so say 31 hours all in?thats easy enough for me and good money earned.

Was thinking the same Dazmond, them sort of hours couldn't be good for the joints this guys going to suffer in
later life.

I'm loving it at the moment.
I work Tuesday - Friday and have someone with me each day... An average day "on the glass" time is 9am - 4pm.
I leave Monday's free... Each Sunday if I feel like workng at all on the Monday I'll take a look at Aworka and arrange a mornings work for the Monday to work on my own... Or sometimes I'll just take the whole Monday off as a paperwork / marketing / find a franchisee day.
My goal this year is to bring on board my first franchisee.
Andy ;)

Oh lads you wouldn't believe it, got in tonight at 9, from a cleaning job I have. Pis ding cleaners do my head in.
Started cleaning McDonald's windows at 4 this morning........ Honest to god I don't know how i do it. I suppose it's my girls,
Got clouds in front of my eyes so guna have me tea and a shower and go to bed.
Tomora morning starts at 4am, about 20 jobs to do before 12, then go to anfield to clean cladding that builders have made a mess of on main stand redevelopment. Finish that about 3, then clean windows on main stand entrance, a glass staircase, 6 or 7 sets of doors, 2 glass serving counters along top of bars in lounges, windows on ticket office and shop, this will be about 5-6pm and if I can will do centenary entrance.
If not Sunday morning 4am start 6 jobs in Liverpool city centre, see some sights let me tell you, fin about 7 shoot to anfield for pre match clean for charity game. Have to be fin 3 hour prior to kick off,
2 x car show rooms for Sunday after noon with a bit of pressure washing.
Monday - omg lads I f£&@ing hate Mondays.
Got asked to clean a section of anfield road roof yesterday ( about a full days work with pressure washer, will try and wangle a cherry picker to get it up there ).............." When ya get a chance Matt"
Am like ye sound mate, I just got to clean lime st station next month, working with a friend, so I get it done before then 💩, it's next month on Wednesday, oh well we get it done some how.
Just don't expect the little fella to be up to his best when the wife feels horny !!!!!!!
I used to like a drink of a night but now if I had a drink at 11 I still be pist in the morning 😤
-
I do get pist off with work, but I just keep going, make the most of each day and always keep ya chin up, try to have a good laugh in work with lads of morning before they fin at 12-1pm afternoons will be spent working on my own, and evening are seeing to my cleaning contracts, there's always stuff to do and more.
I don't like it, but i know there is a million people out there who would swap there life for mine, so I will bite the bullet and nuckle down, I reckon if I took a week off and recharged my batteries I would give terry burrows a run for his money haha.

You only get one life and you cant take your money with you when you're gone. Live life now whilst you've got your health and energy or you'll regret it later in life. Money is just a means of paying the bills.....take time out to enjoy life before it passes you by. Greed just leads to an early grave and divorce, separation, whatever. Smile and work to live not live to work, tired, growing old depressed, lonely and bitter.
-
I'm going to chuck in a weird suggestion here; get a daily meditation practise going. One of the benefits that I find with meditation is that I'm less bothered by how I'm feeling - and somehow, with the meditation - feelings seem to have less power over me. It's not like I'm a zombie though, of course I can feel 'fed up', but so what? It's just a feeling. Meditation has given me 'clever feet', so even if I'm feeling 'fed up', I'm not all wrapped up and controlled by the feeling, I can still do the stuff I should be doing.
I also struggled to get a daily meditation practise going - just meditating is a chore sometimes - when there's so many other things I'd rather be doing. Some advice I was given for this can be applied to other situation too. I was told - not to meditate - but just to get my arse in the place where I'd normally meditate and see what happens. And when I did, I ended up meditating.
The lesson here is 'Move the body and the mind will follow'. Even if you don't want to work, just move the body - get yourself into the van - and see what happens.
Them's my Jedi mind-tricks. ;D

Very much not greed mate, it's a case of keeping my customers happy. 75% of my wages are helping my children through college and university, as I am not a scrounger, bum! or i do not claim a single penny off the state.
Have you tried paying for uni fees and materials. My eldest is doin a ba hons in fashion design. Material this term alone is more than an extreme 47, so don't suggest this.
I have a vision
And my next venture will be with my wife abroad somewhere
I will be more happy than anyone when I get time with my family, this is what no one can buy, and to see them succeed makes me feel like I have achieved my main goal. Money has no meaning to me.

Phew. Sorry mate but I'd rather live in a tent than work to that extremity. I don't know how you keep it up.
I could not live like that.

your a workaholic mate.your gona "crash and burn" one day.its in the post for sure. your extreme workload will damage your health in time.
-
Ur prob right there dazmond, I do think I am a workaholic, I no I work a lot of hours but it's not 100 every week I was just saying I have done plenty of 100 hour, a few years ago I was covering 400 William hill book makers fortnightly across north west, an since Christmas I have cut back on out of town work, but as soon as you think right I have cut back on things more work comes in. I am commercial so jobs come in that can be from £15 - thousands and customer base is very wide. Average week is about 70 hours give or take.
I will do my very best to fin work on Thursday about 12 so me and the wife can take are little god daughter out, usually a trip to the farms to feed the animals.
Wow pic loaded. Got to do this next month.
-
If you spend your life thinking "When X happens I'll be happy" you are setting yourself up for a life of unhappiness. For example "I will be more happy than anyone when I get time with my family". You need to do things to make that happen now. Then you can be happy now rather than at some date in the future that you know in your heart will never arrive.
Do the things that make you happy (like time with your family) and make sure you fit in work around that. It's been shown in survey after survey that kids don't want "stuff", they want time and attention from their parents.
You need to say "no" to work occasionally.

You are to be commended mate , Your kids obviously drive you to work hard in order to provide for them , I dont have kids our choice which suits me as i am a lazy blighter sometimes .

I really admire the OP's work ethic, but I have to agree with what has already been said that it's all about balance.
Take a good, honest look at your business, and ask yourself what you want from it. Is all the time you put into it worth the demands it is taking on your health? How much do you need to earn to provide you and your family with the things they need, or are you working yourself into an early grave to give them what you think they want? Could you make some changes that will enable you to switch off and relax? Working is important, but so too is recreation.
If you can address some of these issues, you may be able to make your life a little simpler. If you go on the way you are you are going to make yourself ill, and if you do that, your family will suffer with you.
Hope you get yourself sorted asap.
John
-
you need only 3 things for happyness ,
something or someone to love,
something to look forward to
and something to do.
money has very little to do with it.
-
Vin, working hard for my family means I still have another 8 or so years til my youngest will be leaving uni, and about the same time on my mortgage. This will make me 46, with the option to either down scale or sell up and move abroad for a slower way of life. Each to there own
As a parent you want to give ur children the best possible start to life, this is what dads do. I had my children young so will be, enjoying the later years of my life.
Balance some times comes in the form of material, sometimes as much as £30sqm, sewing machines, over lockers, manaquins
The little ones drama lessons don't come cheap, these are over £60 per week, so balance for me is pushing my children into a hobbies/career that they will enjoy, and won't find the need to have a little rant on forums about how unhappy work can make you.
I will of course, if I open a bar somewhere nice in my later life, give free beers to ciu members.
You will find me in the " it's too hot to work - I need a beer " section.

Fair play to you chap. Its not my angle with work, but you cant knock a Dad who's trying hardest for his kids. You set a fine example.
Well done.

You work stupidly hard then come on here and say you're fed up. Then, every bit of advice you've been given you've pointed out that your life's different, so you need to keep carrying on. You also talk like you're the only one with kids.
I sincerely hope you get to your retirement. The way you're living it looks like it could be a long shot.

Remember this is the clean it up forum matty, it's basically Jeremy Kyle for window cleaners, you'll never hear the end of it, people on here are obsessed with there opinions and can't for the life of them just be kind and supportive.
No matter what you say on here, there will be those that persist in forcing there opinion,
Head over to the other window cleaning forum, I've been a member on that for about 3 years and it's a million times friendlier than this one,
I enjoy coming on here to have a laugh and joke at the nonsesne, but that's about it.
Oh and also winding up the jelous ones - they know who they are ;)

Come on mate trying to warn someone on the dangers of over doing it is hardly being unkind, Iv done what Matty's done
as far as working long hours is concerned and am now paying for it with my health.
If I can stop somebody making the same mistake I will.
